Cubs 13, Marlins 4

OSS: The Cubs apparently just love sweeps.

Three+ up:

  1. Addison Russell knocked in his first homer of the year to cap off the Cubs eight run third inning. He started the inning with a leadoff double, and also added two walks and a single later in the game. The offense in general was firing on all cylinders today, with an assist from the wind, but it has great to see Addy get on base in all of his PAs.
  2. Anthony Rizzo also had a big day, driving in five runs on a homer and two doubles. He's still got a way to go before he drags his wRC+ above average, but this offense could certainly use his bat heating up.
  3. Willson Contreras somehow hit two triples in this game. The wind certainly had an assist, but you don't see multi-triple games from catchers that often (dying laughing).
  4. The conditions were primed for home runs, but Q made it through six innings giving up just one run. He brought his ERA down to a relatively respectable 4.42 with this start.

Meh down:

  1. Rookie callup Justin Hancock was greeted by a two run homer in his first inning of work. He was later robbed of his first career RBI after drawing a bases loaded walk that was called back due to the ump having dinner plans or something, and not wanting to extend a blowout.

Next up: The Cubs have an off-day, and then renew the Two Teams, One Cup rivalry at 1:20 PM CT on Friday. Tyler Chatwood kicks it off against Carson Fulmer.

There are some horrible teams out there this year.

To the alignment discussion in the previous thread, a big reason why the Cubs wanted the Mets in the same division was that the Tribune Co. owned WPIX, which was the longtime local TV carrier for the Mets. They shared production of games between the two teams and presumably saved a few bucks, which we all fondly recall being the Tribune’s MO for years.

MLB has long had some pretty dumb reasons behind major business decisions.

    tablet dave,

I remember thinking that the Cubs and Mets would somehow still be in the same division when they first announced the three division format. The Tribune was really pushing be Cubs/Mets rivalry back then.

In retrospect, the idea of a Cubs/Mets rivalry seems kind of silly, at least anywhere close to Cubs/Cardinals or even Cubs/Brewers. But I wasn’t alive for 1969, so I could be missing something.

This isn’t just true for all business decisions but governmental and educational and parental (etc) ones for all time here and forever amen. Institutions are not known for their sense.

    Perkins,

I think if two of the biggest cities in the country can create a rivalry that it’s a good thing. I think baseball has overlooked this and we’re left with regional rivalries that most people don’t care about. I loved it when the Cubs played the Mets when I was a kid. I remember it being as big a rivalry for the Cubs as the Cardinals were and that was a great thing. I miss playing the Phillies as often as the Cubs did. I wish the Cubs could play the Dodgers and Giants as frequently as they play the Cardinals. I don’t care if the Cubs ever play the Brewers again. Or the Twins or Royals or White Sox. To me, those games are only slightly more meaningful than if the Cubs renewed their annual game against the Iowa Cubs.

    dmick89,

That’s fair, and as I’m moving back to New York, I’d certainly be happy for more than 3-4 games against the Mets. I just have trouble seeing it as similar to Cubs/Cardinals.

    berselius,

Beginning of June. Debatining trying to see the Cubs at Citi that weekend, but that’s probably not wise.

If you can only get to one park, I’d highly recommend Citi Field over new Yankee Stadium, though obviously the Yankees are the much more entertaining team this year.

Hit me up if you’ve got some space in your schedule; I know the city pretty well, and would be happy to buy you a beer if I’m not traveling for work.

Here is the preview. The Cubs are good, the White Sox are bad, and the weather is shit. Baseball may or may not be played . If it is played, one of the teams will win while the other will lose.
