Cubs 2, Rockies 5 (4.21.18)

In Postgame by berselius60 Comments

OSS: Darvish loses the handle in the fifth.

Three up:

  1. The Cubs started this one with a bang, hitting to solid singles to lead off the game and then were inches away from a three run homer by Contreras.
  2. Denver local David Bote hit a double in his first MLB plate appearance, so good for him. The Rockies fans around me spent a good 20 minutes arguing which high school he would have gone to once they saw that he was form Longmont.
  3. No runs allowed by the bullpen, and Luke Farrell actually looked kind of good in his Cubs debut.

Three down:

  1. Darvish was cruising to start the game, no-hitting the Rockies for the first few innings. But then things fell apart in the 5th and suddenly it was 5-2. It looks like a narrative is emerging that he can't bounce back from adversity mid-start, so that's great for a guy three starts into his Cubs career.
  2. Rizzo's back may be feeling better, but his bat isn't there yet. He did not look good again in this one, and IIRC he even tried to bunt for a hit without a significant shift on.
  3. Shoutout to the Rockies fan in the row in front of me who showed up late, shit-talked the Cubs for most of the game, and puked on himself in the eighth but stuck around until the end of the game.

Next up: The Cubs go for the series win at 2:10 CT with Quintana facing off against German Marquez. Hopefully I'll get some kind of radio reception as I had back through the mountains.

(FTR—I don’t understand how Manaea scored 100 and Arrieta only scored 98 against the Dodgers when he K’ed more and walked the same amount. Maybe I misread something.)

MLB has been using Tango’s Game Score 2.0, which has different weights. By Bill James’s version (the original), Wood is the only Cubs pitcher to get a 100 in a 9 inning game (it was a 105, the highest ever mark for a 9 inning game).

And Morrow got a 100 when he was with TOR, back in 2010.

#Cubs 3B Kris Bryant has a small laceration above his eye from sunglasses but no sign of a concussion. He will continue to be evaluated. Good news

6 runs isn’t going to be enough in this park. And it would be nice to see Q go longer than 6 innings today.

I don’t know why Happ didn’t come in in the first place (he could play second and move La Stella to third.)

    Rizzo the Rat,

Didn’t realize they had tomorrow off. I retract my request and will ban myself. (dying laughing)

Hey, Rizzo, when you crowd the plate like that, you have no right to complain when you accidentally get hit.

    Is heyward back or what?

I think Heyward’s back is alright. Zobrist’s and Rizzo’s have been acting up lately though.

    dmick89,

Not Chatwood. He has actually been good for the Cubs, if underused.

Note that the antecedent of *He* is not Tyler Chatwood but Brandon Morrow. And today *he* was used but not very good, but all is well that ends well in this version of reality. (Those alternate realities are fucked though.)

    dmick89,

Remember when Mike Hampton signed a huge contract with the Rockies with some of the motivation being that any diminishing value on the pitching side he would make up with the bat? That worked out pretty well for all parties involved (well…save for Hampton and the Rockies).

MLB should have at least three different kinds of balls — juiced with low seams for the Marlins, Padres, and Giants; unjuiced with high seams for the Rockies; and normal for everybody else.
