JOT Cubs Minor League Recap 7-25-13

New Orleans Zephyrs 3 @ Iowa Cubs 4

Mike Olt went 0-2 with a walk and a run scored. Josh Vitters helpfully took himself out of the running for 3B by injuring himself as he rounded first. He went 1-2 with and RBI and the severity of his injury is not yet known. Jake Arrieta helped his own cause by doubling in two runs. Ty Wright had a pinch-hit double.

Jake Arrieta was pretty great in his 3rd start as an I-Cub. He went 6.2 innings and allowed 4 hits and walks, culminating in a run scored. He fanned 8 and threw an indefensible 116 pitches. That shouldn't happen in a AAA game unless you are working on a no-no. Marcus Hatley got the last out of the 7th, and Alberto Cabrera worked through some trouble but escaped the 8th unscathed. Brian Schlitter continues a string of rocky appearances, allowing back-to-back solo shots with one out in the 9th before hanging on for the 4-3 victory. It's his 13th save in Iowa.

Tennessee Smokies 10 @ Huntsville Stars 5

Javier Baez now has 8 home runs in Tennessee. That's unbelievable, even attached to a .229 average. His ISO is .385 in Tennessee. That's crazy. It's really fucking hard to have an OBP of .260 and a wRC+ of 144, but here we are. It's also really funny to note that a) his OPS is HIGHER in Tennessee than it is in Daytona and b) since all of his hits are home runs he's still "hit-unlucky" with BABIP.

Arismendy Alcantara got a day off to deal with his struggles, but saw time as a PH. He went 1-2 with a walk and a 3-run double. Great to see, and like dmick89 noted, I'm still tremendously pleased with him this year. Semi-forgotten prospect Rubi Silva was 2-4 with a walk and a home run, as did Justin Bour (minus the walk). Chad Noble had a nice game too, with 3 walks and a hit. Christian Villanueva doubled.

There were 6 pitchers for the Smokies yesterday. I don't want to talk about them all, so I'll just note that Chang-Yong Lim is really close to getting promoted to Iowa and getting a sneak peek in September.

Daytona Cubs 6 @ Palm Beach Cardinals 5

This team is pretty boring. Zeke DeVoss doubled and walked, but strike out 3 times. Ben Carhart was 2-5 with 2 RBI also. Anthony Giansanti played 2B, which I'm not sure I've seen before (he's an OF), and went to 1-5. Wes Darvill tripled and walked. Chadd Krist doubled and singled.

Ivan Pineyro had a curious game. He gave up 5 runs in 6 innings… but he only allowed 6 hits and walked none. He got pretty unlucky with strand rate, and fanned 8. It's hard to call a 6 IP, 5 ER performance "good," but this probably qualifies. Jeffrey Lorick was great in 3 scoreless frames and picked up the win.

Kane County Cougars 11 @ Beloit Snappers 8

This was a hit party. I'm just going to copy+paste; there's too much good to say.

That's great. Even the RISP is awesome (leaving 13 on base is ok when you score 11).

Michael Heesch had a poor start, allowing 5 in 3 on 5 hits, 2 walks. Justin Amlung got the win with 2 innings of 1 run ball. Armando Rivero struck out 5 in 2 innings. It was awesome. Sheldon McDonald went 1-2-3, and Al Yevoli allowed 2 runs in 1 inning.

Boise Hawks 4 @ Eugene Emeralds 5

Jacob Hannemann was 1-3 with 2 RBI. Ok. Kris Bryant went 0-3 with a walk and a run. No errors or strikeouts. Yasiel Balaguert went 2-4 with a double, as did David Bote. Balaguert cannot hit lefties to save his life. Balaguert is 20 and is quite solid in Boise. I think that Balaguert is going to end up being on some Top 15 prospect lists at the end of the year. 20 is pretty young for Boise (so is Shawon Dunston, also having a nice year, and David Bote).

A lot of nice prospects did poorly pitching wise. Paul Blackburn took the start and allowed 2 runs in 1 inning. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Tyler Skulina pitched 2 innings and allowed the same number of runs. Duane Underwood allowed 4 hits and struck out 4. No runs allowed, so that's nice. Michael Wagner also allowed no runs in 2 innings, fanning 3. My main man Carlos Martinez-Pumarino got the loss with 2 outs and 1 run allowed.

BRETT JACKSON SIGHTED. He went 1-3 with 2 strikeouts. Jesse Hodges went 1-3 with a home run.
