Logan Watkins had a Logan Watkins-type day, going 1-4 with a double and a walk. He also struck out twice. He was also caught stealing. He actually hasn't stolen a base all year and has been caught thrice. Brett Jackson 2: The Secret of the lOoze pinch-hit and had a single. He'd come around to score. Ian Stewart brought his average up to .077 with a 1-4, 2 SO performance. He's clearly ready for the big leagues. Brent Lillibridge accepted his assignment and was the 1B/CF today. He went 1-4 with a run scored. As a team, the I-Cubs walked only once and struck out 6 times.
Chris Rusin got the start last night and was putrid. He struck out 3, walked 2, gave up 8 hits (one of them a home run) en route to a 4.1 IP, 7 ER performance. Esmailin Caridad came in relief, and surrendered a solo home run. His line was 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO. His ERA came "down" to 10.13. Cory Wade closed it out with a 1-hit, no run ninth inning. The Cubs are now 5-10 on the season.
The Montgomery Biscuits have to be a strong contender for worst name in the minors.
Everyone but Jonathon Mota had at least a hit for the Smokies yesterday. Matt Szczur had a double and a home run, which he sorely needed. He had 2 RBI for a 2-4 day. Ronald Torreyes drew a walk in addition to his one hit; he'd drive in a run and score twice. Arismendy Alcantara hit a 3-run blast in the bottom of the first (plating Szczur and Torreyes), and drew a walk also. He also struck out twice and had another freaking error. Christian Villanueva had a double and a single for a 2-5 day, also striking out once. Jae-Hoon Ha also doubled and walked, to go with a strikeout. He drew the start in RF; Szczur is manning CF so far. Whatever. Rubi Silva went 2-4 with a walk; he's had a nice little season so far. It's hard to believe that he was a million-dollar bonus baby at one point; of course, never walking and striking out a lot is going to dampen anyone's prospect chances. Johermyn Chavez had a double and a single and drove in 3 runs. He also whiffed once. As a team, the Smokies drew 6 walks and struck out just 5 times.
Dallas Beeler had a quality start: 7 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR. The throwing error seemingly cost the Smokies (obviously not much, though). Zach Rosscup and Frank Batista both allowed no baserunners in the 8th and 9th. The Smokies are now 10-6 on the year. You should go see them if you can.
It seems like these two teams exclusively play each other on the weekends.
Star of the game for the Cubs was John Andreoli. He had 4 singles and a walk en route to a 4-4, 2 R, 1 RBI day. He was almost half of the Cubs' hits. Javier Baez went 1-4 with an RBI and a SO. Tim Saunders went 2-4 with 2 runs and a strikeout. Jorge Soler's bad games are still pretty good: 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, SO. Stephen Bruno earned the golden sombrero with a 0-4, 4K performance. Ugly. Cubs were awful offensively today, with 11 SO and 4 BB.
Ben Wells took the bump to start the game and went 6 innings. He surrendered 7 hits and a walk, striking out 6. 4 of those runners would go on to score, which is pretty unlucky, strand-wise. Yeiper Castillo pitched 2 innings in relief and allowed no runners. Sheldon McDonald wasn't so lucky; he got tagged for a pair in the ninth. The Daytona Cubs are now 7-9.
Gioskar Amaya had a triple. It was his lone hit of the game (1-4, 1 SO, 1 R). Marco Hernandez continues his hot streak with a 2-4 performance, scoring twice and driving in one. Daniel Vogelbach went 2-4 with a 1 run scored and a strikeout. Jeimer Candelario had a double and 2 RBI en route to a 2-4 game. Rock Shoulders also put a charge in one, depositing it outside the field of play for a home run. He went 2-3 with a walk, a HR, a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. Wes Darvill had a nice game, going 2-2 with a walk and an RBI. Pin-Chieh Chen also had a good one, going 0-1 with a pair of walks (ok, it wasn't that good).
Pierce Johnson had another nice outing. He struck out 6, walked 1, and gave up 3 hits. He'd allow no runs, but one would score on a Candelario error. Nathan Dorris relieved him adequately, and Eddie Orozco gave up 2 garbage runs in the 7th and final inning (it's a doubleheader).
Gioskar Amaya went 1-3 with a walk and a strikeout. He'd score once. Marco Hernandez has a triple and struckout once. He'd plate Amaya on the second PA of the game. Daniel Vogelbach had another 2 hits to go with a walk and strikeout. Jeimer Candelario had no hits but did walk once. Rock Shoulders had another awesome game, going 3-3 with another HR. He had 3 RBI. Oliver Zapata had a 1-2 day with a walk and a stolen base.
Tayler Scott had a quality start. He allowed 5 hits and a walk, striking out 4. That was good for 3 runs, all earned, over 6 innings. Jeffry Antigua pitched an easy 7th for his first save of the year. The Kane County Cougars are now 6-8 on the year.
