Brett Jackson 2: The Second Part of the Tragedy went 0-4 with a walk. Logan Watkins had a single, a walk, a strikeout, and a run. Dave Sappelt hit cleanup, and went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored. Josh Vitters had a single and a run scored. He also had an RBI. Donnie Murphy had the best day, going 2-4 with a double and a 3-run bomb in the 6th inning. The Cubs only had 7 hits, but went 3-6 with RISP and walked 4 times to 4 strikeouts. A nice win.
Nick Struck continues to struggle this season. He allowed 4 runs in 6 innings off of 11 hits, a walk, 4 strikeouts, and a home run. Esmailin Caridad locked down the 7th and 8th, and Zach Putnam grabbed his second save of the year.
Matt Szczur went 2-5 with a double and an RBI (he also struck out once). He also stole a base, so a productive day. Ronald Torreyes went 0-4, but he did have an RBI. Arismendy Alcantara probably needs a day off; he went 0-4 with 3 SO and an error. Ty Wright played DH and went 1-3 with a walk and strikeout. Rafael Lopez had a good day, with a 2-4, double, HR performance. His blast was a solo shot. Exactly everything I said about Lopez, repeat for Rubi Silva. Silva really, really needs to work on his plate discipline, but the power is definitely there. Christian Villanueva keeps plugging away, going 1-4 with a strikeout. Anthony Giansanti continues to impress after his promotion to Tennessee, going 2-4 with a double and a run scored and RBI. He also struck out twice, and had his first error. Tim Torres went 1-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. He also stole a base. The Smokies only walked once and struck out 10 times, but going 5-10 with RISP solves all of those problems.
Dallas Beeler had a quality start (6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO). He needs to strike out more dudes to get promoted. Tony Zych struggled in his single inning, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, a strikeout, and an unearned run. Trey McNutt faced 5 batters in his inning and none of them made contact with the ball. Kevin Rhoderick threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.
This sucked. Only 3 Cubs got a hit and only 4 reached base. Zeke DeVoss went 2-4, Ben Carhart went 2-4, Chadd Krist went 1-3 with a walk, and Jorge Soler went 0-3 with a walk and a strikeout and a stolen base. Everyone else went 0-fer with a shitload of strikeouts (11 today). At least there were no errors and 4 double plays.
The top of the order was actually decent here. Pin-Chieh Chen went 1-4 to leadoff. Gioskar Amaya and Dan Vogelbach both went 2-4 with no XBH, SO, or BB. Amaya also stole a base. Jeimer Candelario went 1-4 with a double, as did Yaniel Cabezas. David Bote had 2 walks and went 0-2 (also an error). Rock Shoulders celebrated his Prospect Watch inclusion with an 0-3, BB job.
Pierce Johnson gave up a 2-R HR for the bulk of his damage. He went 6, with 7 H, 4 R (3 ER), 1 BB, 6 SO, and 1 HR. Jeffry Antigua dominated in 2 innings, with no baserunners allowed and 5 strikeouts. The LumberKings went 3-10 with RISP.
