JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-12-13

Sacramento River Cats 1 @ Iowa Cubs 2

So, there's a pretty cool story here. Josh Vitters came back, and played 3B (Olt played DH). He hit a home run in the bottom of the 4th; then, in the 5th, Olt called, and hit a home run of his own. Vitters ended up going 1-2 with that HR, a walk, and a strikeout; Olt had just the HR and the K.

Justin Grimm had the start and did…OK. 5.1 innings and a single run allowed, but he walked and gave up 4 hits each. He did fan 6. Marcos Mateo pitched 1.2 scoreless, Zach Rosscup (newly promoted) had a dicey 2 outs (hit allowed, 2 walks allowed), and 2 strikeouts. 1.1 innings of scoreless ball for Brian Schlitter, and his 16th save.

Montgomery Biscuits 2 @ Tennessee Smokies 3

Arismendy Alcantara played SS and tripled once. He committed his 28th error. Javier Baez played DH and singled and homered. He didn't commit an error, either! He also struck out twice. Justin Bour doubled, as did Taylor Davis.

Matt Loosen pitched 2 scoreless innings, but the game was stopped and resumed on Eric Jokisch's day to pitch. He went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (one earned) on 4 hits, 2 walks. Tony Zych had the save with 2 outs.

Montgomery Biscuits 4 @ Tennessee Smokies 9

Javier Baez went 1-4 at SS. Christian Villanueva went 2-3 with a walk and a 3-run blast, and Jonathan Mota went 2-3 with a 2-run jack (4 RBI total). Justin Bour went 2-4 with a double, and Nate Samson went 2-3 as well. I like Nate Samson because he's the emergency pitcher.

Yeiper Castillo allowed a quartet of runs in a trio of innings. That's not good. Jeffry Antigua allowed a single hit in 3 innings. Frank Batista pitched a scoreless inning.

Tampa Yankees 4 @ Daytona Cubs 5

This boring team is about to get a lot less boring; both Dan Vogelbach and Kris Bryant are getting called up. Pin-Chieh Chen had 2 singles. Anthony Giansanti and Ben Carhart both tripled and singled.

Ivan Pineyro went 6 innings and was pretty good. He allowed a single run, on 8 hits and a walk. Lendy Castillo went a single inning and sucked; Jeffrey Lorick notched the save with 2 scoreless.

Cedar Rapids Kernels 3 @ Kane County Cougars 4

Strong performance from the top of the order. Oliver Zapata went 1-2 with a double and walk. Giuseppe Papaccio, Dan Vogelbach, and Jeimer Candelario each went 2-4 with a run scored; Jeimer had a double as one of those hits.

Kane County Cougars
Michael Heesch 5.0 2 1 0 1 1 0 3.82
Al Yevoli (BS, 1) 2.0 4 2 2 1 2 0 6.10
Andrew McKirahan (W, 2-0) 2.0 0 0 0 2 0 0 2.25
Totals 9.0 6 3 2 4 3 0 4.53

I do that when it's boring^^^^

DSL Osos 5 @ DSL Rojos 4 (7.5 innings)
AZL Mariners 0 @ AZL Cubs 7

Brian Bogusevice went 1-4 with a double in his rehab assignment. Erick Leal started and was dominant again, pitching 5 scoreless, walkless, 1-hit innings with 6 strikeouts. He's probably on the bottom of the Cubs Top 40 prospects, which is a phenomenal return for Tony Campana
