Programming note: I'm taking tomorrow and Friday off to go to GenCon. dmick has kindly offered to step in on those days. There should be no interruption in programming.
Kyle Hendricks pitched, and did fairly poorly. He allowed 4 runs in 5 innings off of 8 hits and 3 walks. He fanned 7. There is a scouting report on him here. Marcus Hatley pitched 2 scoreless, but Alberto Cabrera gave up 2 runs in 2 innings and took the loss.
Javier Baez walked! And singled! And struck out!. Arismendy Alcantara singled, struck out twice, and committed another error. Rubi Silva had a pair of 2-out RBI. Christian Villanueva doubled and singled and walked, very nice. After a poor start, he's quietly had a pretty nice season. A little less patience, a little more power, same plus glove…
Eduardo Figueroa had his 3rd start since being promoted and it was his best one. He went 5 scoreless innings, stranding 6 hits and a walk. Only downside is the lone strikeout. Hunter Cervenka had 2 innings of scoreless ball, and Dayan Diaz surrendered a run in his 2 innings.
Clearwater Threshers 0 @ Daytona Cubs 5 (7 innings)
This team just got a whole hell of a lot more exciting. Dan Vogelbach DH'ed in this one, batting cleanup. He went 2-3 with a 2-run bomb. Zeke DeVoss went 1-2 with a walk and a stolen base (but why steal the base when you're scoring via a Vogelbomb?) Anthony Giansanti went 2-3 as well.
Pierce Johnson was fairly dominant in this game, going 5.2 scoreless innings. He stranded 4 hits and 3 walks and fanned 7. He's going to creep into some Top 5 org lists by virtue of being the best of a host of middling pitching prospects in our system (it's him or CJ Edwards at the moment). That said, I can make a list of 10 pretty decent pitching prospects in our system:
Armando Rivero had his first Daytona save with 1.1 scoreless ball.
Clearwater 3 @ Daytona 2 (7 innings)
The other top prospect promoted to Daytona, Kris Bryant, batting 5th at 3B here. He went deep in this one, and he also struck out. Dan Vogelbach just went 0-3, K in this one. The (extremely limited) offense here was a 2-3 day from Wes Darvill, and a double and walk from Yaniel Cabezas.
Yao-Lin Wang went 5.1 reasonably great innings. He allowed 2 runs on a solo shot and 3 other hits, walked none, and fanned 8. I'll take that every time. Zach Cates closed it out with 1.2 innings of 1 bingo ball, minus the HR he didn't allow.
Yasiel Balaguert was pretty awesome in this game. He went 2-3 with a double and a 3-run homer. He scored 3 runs and walked twice. Very nice to see. Of course, many people did well. Jacob Rogers went 2-2 with 3 walks. Jordan Hankins went 3-5 with a double. David Bote went double-double single-single, with 4 RBI and a walk. Danny Lockhart was a pair of singles. In fact, only Rony Rodriguez didn't get a hit, and even he had an RBI and a run.
Boise has a great pitching staff. Duane Underwood started and went 3 innings. He allowed a single run on 3 hits, 1 walk. He didn't strike anyone out. Paul Blackburn went the next 3 and allowed no runs, though he allowed one more hit than Duane. He also fanned 1. Trey Masek pitched 2 perfect innings, fanning 3, and Eddie Orozco struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced for a scoreless ninth.
The DSL Cubs are 5 games up on the Pirates2 in the BC South. The Rojos are 5 games out of not being in last place.
