Dreamcast 78: Shohei Hey!

In by Rice Cube70 Comments

I decided to save “rapid unscheduled disassembly” for some other time when we finally see the Padres fire sale or something similarly spectacular, but we did get together just before Thanksgiving and after a very bad MLB decision occurred. Thankfully, in keeping with the theme of the holiday, nobody signed Shohei Ohtani right after we finished recording, so here we are in lightly-edited glory.

Topics:

  • Some stuff on awards, qualifying offers, and Rule 5 protection/roster moves
  • Our dreams of Shohei Ohtani and some other new friends
  • The A’s owner is dumb and should be pilloried literally and figuratively

You also get to hear some Bears talk because reasons. We’ll be back after the Winter Meetings conclude.

RIP Willie Hernandez. Out of nowhere 1984 MVP/Cy Young for the Tigers who was previously a Cub. Like many Cubs of the late 70s and 80s he was better after he left the team. His baseball card and Ray Burris’s are among the 1st Cubs cards in my memory.

One thought I wish I had before we recorded this last episode:

Doesn’t Shohei’s demand to keep negotiation details confidential temper the amounts he’ll get offered? Like, if actual offers don’t leak as he goes from meeting to meeting, isn’t it possible he’s not going to drive up the total value as astronomically as he could if his suitors bid against each other through the grapevine?

    Rice Cube,

Yeah, that’s the thing. I would venture to guess the right fit is playing a bigger role than the absolute top dollar. They want to get the highest number from the team they want, not the most they could possibly get overall.

    Rice Cube,

I just watched it myself and I agree. I’m kind of pulling against one of the bakers but it’s mostly a complaint against the producers that they didn’t get eliminated early on after a horrible week.

This week was also the first time I’ve even remotely enjoyed seeing a mille feuille related challenge. Cast that pastry into the sun.

    Rice Cube,

I think the challenge with one team only is people default to the same long-tenured players (e.g., Cal Ripken) instead of young players who haven’t gone anywhere else yet.

    Rice Cube,

I realize he just finished in the top 3 for Cy Young but that guy just screams regression

I got nothing against Sonny Gray and he’s had a pretty solid career, but I hope the regression stick hits all at once now he’s going to the Cardinals.

    berselius,

It would seem the HOF wouldn’t grant him special dispensation or anything if they didn’t do so for other players in the past, unless they did and I just don’t know what I’m talking about…
