Anyone know where to find a decent win expectancy chart online? I’m curious as to what the Cubs win expectancy was before and after the Thing That Happened Ten Years Ago Today, and also what the win expectancy would have been had The Thing That Happened Ten Years Ago Today not had happened to Moises Alou.

Also, I will physically fight anyone that argues that The Wire was not the best show in history. It also had the best series finale ever (despite an up and down overall final season), but we won’t come to blows if you argue it with me.

And Myles, I’m glad I’m not the only person that thinks of life events like poker hands. I think about life-pot odds a lot.

Wow. I would have thought the DC sniper deal happened a few years after TTTHTYAT. Weird how memory (or maybe it’s just mine) works sometimes.

    @ SVB:

Yeah, MASH was another good example of the luck/good writing thing. Not only did Potter replace Blake, and Klinger (kind of) Radar, you had BJ replace Trapper and Charles replace Frank. It gave Alda lots of different dynamics with which to work as Hawkeye (and to a lesser extent, Hot Lips as well).

A lot of that was luck in timing and such, but the writers made those new characters just as important as the ones they were replacing.

If we’re going to talk about it, the bottom line is that the Cubs fucked it up. Gonzalez, Prior, Alou, and then the next day Wood pitching like shit, though he did bring his bat at least. Just another example of them, the team and no one else, choking. That play had shit to do with it.

That’s the first time I’ve heard someone say it had the best finale. I didn’t think the finale was that memorable and the only reason I even know which episode you’re talking about is that I rewatched the series earlier this year.

Agree on the players being 100% responsible for losing that series. I remember thinking after the (dying laughing) play that it was kind of a dumb move by the fan but shit happens & it still looks good for the Cubs to finish it off. I was pissed that they imploded and didn’t even think too much about the (dying laughing) play.

Wood coming out and looking shaky (at best) in Game 7 sucked but when he hit that homer to get the lead, I thought the Cubs were going to the Series. That thought didn’t last long either. (dying laughing)

I guess (dying laughing) doesn’t mean dying laughing any more (dying laughing). I could probably count the times I used (dying laughing) other than on this site (and ACB) without running out of digits (toes/fingers not numbers).

Wood tied it. Alou put them ahead.

After Alou put it on the street, I thought, “Holy shit, we just took the Baseball Gods’ best punch and we’re still here.” Then I realized there was a ton of baseball left to play.

I think everybody was upset and was upset with Bartman right away. I don’t remember what the announcers did, but they sure didn’t help. Moises Alou was the worst though. I know I reacted to his his reaction in the moment. I think it was difficult for anyone watching the game on tv to not initially blame the fan. What’s unfathomable about it is that the Sun Times published his address and hours, weeks, months and years later people didn’t yet realize how stupid it was to blame a fan.

When I think back to this day and this series, it’s a game and series the Cubs lost, but what that fan lost is far, far worse.

The Marlins beat Wood and Prior. If you would have asked 100 random Cubs fans if it was possible to do that before the series all of them would have said no. The Marlins were good at baseball.

Thanks, Aisley. As I was typing my comment I was trying to remember if Wood’s HR got the lead or tied it up.

Your second sentence summed up my thoughts perfectly.

No doubt about it. For the guy to be vilified and threatened like that is ridiculous. Did the Sun-Times really publish his address? I don’t remember that but I don’t pay too much attention to media stuff.

Bartman’s name and address were published on message boards. I never saw anything about it being published in the Sun-Times.

    *spoilers*
The funeral scene, Bubbs coming up the stairs and his NA monologue, the way everything was wrapped up…..I dunno. They really found it in the last three episodes of that season. And the finale is still my favorite episode from that show to go back and watch.

    @ sitrick:
OK, yeah, Bubbs had some very powerful scenes in that episode. I agree. I definitely remember those. I had a lot easier than Bubbs had it, but every little inch of trust you gain back from the family you caused to mistrust you is a momentous occasion. That was awesome seeing that.

Still, I’d have a very hard time saying it’s the best finale. The Wire was a great show. You’ll never get any argument from me about that. I don’t agree it’s the best finale.

Should we fight after school? Parking lot? Football field?

You’re right SVB but the S-T didn’t need Mariotti to have a complete lack of journalistic integrity. That paper has been a cesspool for decades.

It doesn’t sound like the Sun-Times published his home address (1 hour, 3 minutes in). They did, however, publish his name, hometown, and where he worked.

yeah i seem to recall his name unofficially being reported right away, but there was like a refusal of the MSM to report any details due to the pure hatred being directed towards the poor guy. then the sun-times said “fuck it” and went ahead and published. then everyone else followed. i’m not sure if the trib ever actually ever published his name though, at least for a really long time.

I don’t like describing their failure as “choking.” That verb implies a failure of nerves (e.g., the World English Dictionary defines it as “(esp in sport) to be seized with tension and fail to perform well”).

The term just gets on my nerve because it’s used often by people who moralize sports narratives (pro athletes should be prepared for the big game!).
