red lettering is estimated arbitration contract
* DeJesus has a club option for $6.5 million in 2014 or a $1.5 million buy out
*Wood has a club option for $3.0 million in 2013
Ian Stewart was a Super-2 in 2011 so he has four years of arbitration
Cubs owe Carlos Pena $5 million
Cubs owe Marlins $18 million minus Volstad's salary for Carlos Zambrano. Cubs pay total of $18 million.

As of 12-23-11, approximately $69-70 million is scheduled to be paid out in 2012. Approximately $20.8 million more will be spent on the 6 arbitration eligible players. The remaining 11 spots on the roster would cost no less than $5.3 million. Up to 15 additional players on the 40-man roster would make a combined total less than $1 million (we'll use $0.8 million). Therefore, the Cubs currently have $96.8 million scheduled to be paid out in 2012. The Cubs still have plenty of money to spend, but few places to spend it.

Figures for Corpas and Reed Johnson are estimated salaries. Those figures have not yet been made availalbe.

Cubs traded Zambrano to the Marlins for Chris Volstad on 1/3/2012. The Cubs will pay the Marlins $15 million of the $18 million owed.

1/6/12: Cubs trade Andrew Cashner and a prospect to San Diego for Anthony Rizzo and a prospect.

On January 10th the Cubs signed Paul Maholm. He'll earn $4.25 million in 2012 with a club option for $6.5 million or a $.5 million buyout. He's therefore guaranteed $4.75 million. There are also a number of incentives in his contract according to Ken Rosenthal. He earns an additional $50K at 150 IP, $100K at 160, 170, 180, 190 and 200 IP for a maximum of $550,000 each year.

3/12 update: The Cubs and Matt Garza settled on a one-year, $9.5m contract for 2012. The Cubs also tendered Jeff Samardzija a $2.64m contract, and agreed to terms with the rest of its pre-arbitration players, The Cubs signed Cuban LHP Gerardo Concepcion to a 5/6 deal with a $3m signing bonus paid this year and the rest spread over the course of the deal. I'm assuming the other $3m is split up equally across the contract.

The Cubs are scheduled to pay $90.87 million to players above the minimum salary listed above, leaving off Sonnanstine and Corpas (minor league deals). Five more players on the active roster brings the total to $93.27, and adding the other players on the 40-man not already under contract and rounding gives an even $94m. Including Pena and Z's money, the Cubs salary commitments for 2012 total out to $114m.
