We took a look at the Oliver projections for the Cubs hitters yesterday and realized how bad the offense currently is. The pitching projections are below:
Name | IP | H | HR | K | BB | ERA | FIP | WAR |
Matt Garza | 205 | 191 | 21 | 180 | 66 | 3.69 | 3.74 | 4 |
Ryan Dempster | 205 | 207 | 23 | 183 | 78 | 4.36 | 4.01 | 2.4 |
Carlos Zambrano | 200 | 198 | 19 | 157 | 88 | 4.34 | 4.19 | 2.4 |
Randy Wells | 175 | 185 | 21 | 114 | 54 | 4.25 | 4.38 | 2.3 |
Sean Marshall | 70 | 61 | 4 | 68 | 20 | 3.15 | 2.86 | 1.8 |
Carlos Marmol | 70 | 50 | 3 | 90 | 43 | 3.63 | 3.03 | 1.4 |
Jeff Samardzija | 65 | 61 | 7 | 52 | 35 | 4.51 | 4.62 | 0.6 |
James Russell | 65 | 72 | 12 | 44 | 17 | 4.79 | 5.03 | 0.4 |
Marcos Mateo | 10 | 10 | 1 | 8 | 4 | 4.78 | 4.10 | 0.1 |
Casey Coleman | 15 | 15 | 1 | 9 | 6 | 4.70 | 4.07 | 0.1 |
Andrew Cashner | 5 | 4 | 0 | 3 | 2 | 3.92 | 3.20 | 0.1 |
Chris Carpenter | 30 | 31 | 3 | 21 | 15 | 5.09 | 4.60 | 0.1 |
Trey McNutt | 30 | 33 | 3 | 20 | 13 | 5.03 | 4.47 | 0.1 |
The FIP column has grey text because I calculated the FIP based on the stats necessary to calculate it. The Cubs have four above average starting pitchers according to Oliver. Makes you wonder why Theo and Jed Hoyer are insistent the team is such need of pitching. If they traded Carlos Zambrano they’d be in need and I still think that’s much more likely than not, but the Oliver projections thinks the Cubs are a far better at pitching. That doesn’t mean they’re very good. They aren’t necessarily bad, but they’re not good either.
Oliver only projects 5 innings for Cashner, but that has more to do with his injury last year than anything else. I have no idea why it’s projecting 200 innings for Zambrano. It’s been a few years since he threw that many innings.

The AAV puts him outside the top 10. The Cubs interest in Pujols may be more than just trying to get the Cardinals to increase their offer. 9/198 is only $22 million per year. I was (dying laughing) when I wrote “only” even though it’s accurate.
I think Thoyer wants them to be very good at pitching since then your shitty hitting isn’t as big a problem since they won’t have to score as many runs.
The same thing can be said for adding bats though. The more offense you provide the worse your defense and pitching can be. One of the things I don’t like about focusing on pitching so much is that it’s about 35-40% of the game. In baseball you have runs scored and runs allowed. Those are the two halves. The batters make up the entirety of the runs scored while pitching AND defense contributed to runs allowed.
Mostly though, let’s just say there’s a 2 WAR pitcher available and you’d have to pay him market value. There’s a 2 WAR hitter available at, let’s say 3rd base since the Cubs have a hole there, and you can get him for 75% of market value. I want that 3rd baseman.

Let’s say the Cubs offered Pujols a 1-year deal for $50 million. I’d be shocked if he didn’t sign that contract. I think part of it is AAV and part of it is the overall amount. It’s different for different players of course. I disagree with berselius that if the Cubs offered 7/198 that he’d still sign with the Cardinals. It would be surprising if he signed the 9/198 contract rather than the 7/198 contract. I think you have to beat the AAV, but you also have to consider the risk the player is taking. If he signs for $165, how likely is it he can make the additional $33 million after that 5-year contract? Players have huge egos. I’m betting that Pujols would sign a 5/165 contract and think that he could finish that contract still being a super star and then go on to get another $100 million contract.
The question, in my opinion, is whether a 5/165 contract is worth it. I don’t really know.

I think Thoyer wants to trade pitching due to lack of FA and absolutely drooling need for it across baseball. The can basically cash-in on Garza and maybe even Z to an extent but also Marmol. Each should bring pieces back that should be ready to make a big impact on 2013.
They can say they are wanting to compete in 2012 but 2013 is the real target. Maybe they get lucky and the players they acquire end up putting them in the race in 2012 but it isn’t expected.

he was a still a 2 WAR player last year. What was the WAR aggregate for us from that position last year?
dylanjQuote Reply
we got him for 5 mill a year. He’s been worth 10 mill a year for the last two via fangraphs.
Its a meh kind of move but by no means a bad one. 73 wins here we come.

I just hope they signed the pre-2011 version of DeJesus who was worth about 3/WAR/year.

i would guess we dont have room for Cespedes now

DeJesus sound like a decent signing, as long as he’s healthy.
i would guess we dont have room for Cespedes now
Cespedes and Brett Jackson are supposedly going to start the year in the minors anyway regardless of what they do, so I think it’s more of a prelude to dumping Soriano and trading Byrd.

weren’t there rumblings regarding the cubs considering Byrd a 4th outfielder?
GWQuote Reply
i would guess we dont have room for Cespedes now
It could mean the opposite. He will likely need at least 1 year in the minors. DeJesus would be a place-holder and then take over for Byrd once he leaves after 2012.
However I am wondering where jackson spends 2012. Right now he is in AAA even if they trade Soriano as LaHair could end up there. But maybe they have no plans to use LaHair as a starter.

He’s good at defense and not bad with the bat. Sounds like a good acquisition for $5 million.

I thought the point of Moneyball was to sign high on-base guys.
I thought the point of Moneyball was to sign high on-base guys.
No, it was to exploit market inefficiencies.
In this case the market inefficiency is David DeJesus (dying laughing)

yeah, mine too. which is leaps and bounds better than my reaction to the similarly small grabow/miles type deals.

I think it’s better than the deal Marlon Byrd got a couple years ago, and that was decent.

Also, I can’t wait for the reaction from fans who wanted Colvin and other “kids” to get more playing time.
I think it’s better than the deal Marlon Byrd got a couple years ago, and that was decent.
Pretty much. DeJesus is pretty much a lefthanded Marlon Byrd, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
BerseliusQuote Reply
Theory = Cubs looking to shore up defense all over the field and then put Pujols in there with a bunch of OBP guys (hopefully) as their offensive plan. Defense = less runs, Pujols = big bat + butts in seats.
Does that work?
Also, I can’t wait for the reaction from fans who wanted Colvin and other “kids” to get more playing time.
DeJesus is 32, he can still sit at the kids table as far as Cub fans are concerned.
I thought the point of Moneyball was to sign high on-base guys.
I thought the point of the movie was to drag out an intentional walk in super-slow-motion for 2.5 hours and see if anybody will actually sit there and watch it all.
