What to Watch
Trevor Story is cooling off after the best start to a season in the history of basebal. Even if he washes out of the majors a la Brad Emaus, he'll still have that incredible, incredible stretch run.
Rockies can score some runs. Their 1 through 4 is pretty serious. Weak underbelly that the Cubs should gut for sure.
Chad Bettis will pitch the first 2 innings, and then after his 80 pitches are thrown the Rockies have a pretty meh bullpen.
Will the Cubs Win?
Yes (16) (he picked 23 yesterday, so that's a win too)
Randy's Record: 7-2
Cubs' Record: 8-1

Hendricks’s velocity was down a touch compared to last season for him last start, so I’m curious to see how he does today. It’s April, so I’m not too worried, but he doesn’t have much MPH to spare.

21 pitches for Bettis through 1.
MillertimeQuote Reply
To paraphrase Olney: Too early to talk about breaking win record, but wouldn’t be shocked if they approach 105–110 wins given their talent and the disparity of the NL.
ceruleanQuote Reply
If the Cubs go 105-110 and finish 5 games below .500, I’m going to be pissed, especially because playing 215 games instead of 162 is unfair.

52 pitches for Bettis through 3. He’s doing a bit better, but I doubt he gets through the 6th. For comparison, Kyle was at about 38 through 3, if my math is right.

Braves are giving it their best shot this season.
mylesQuote Reply
Millertime,
That seems about right. 49 through 4, now.
Rice CubeQuote Reply
They might have a better shot at succeeding with that than actually being competitive. I am so glad the Cubs rebuild didn’t go horribly sideways like theirs did.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Hendricks 49 through 4. I wonder how many times the Cubs starter essentially laps the other team’s starter. Or whatever it would be called.

I haven’t been able to watch today, so I’m obviously the reason the Cubs have been so successful this year. When I watch, they win at an .889 rate.

myles,
Yeah, he’s a pretty good pitcher. I think he’s probably as good or better than Lackey and definitely better than Hammel. I’m surprised he was the 5th guy starting. I thought he proved down the stretch last year he was a better pitcher than Hammel.
dmick89Quote Reply
Millertime,
I listened to the Effectively Wild podcast today—apparently a remodeling is turning into a raze-it-to-the-ground rebuild, combined with trading away young talent and signing old veterans. It may not be as bad as it sounds because of the King’s ransoms they have gotten, but it sure appears to be a clusterfuck.
ceruleanQuote Reply
dmick89,
I can’t believe how good his change up (changeup? change-up?) has gotten. Big difference for him is how much he increased his K% from 2014 to 2015 and now 2016.
MillertimeQuote Reply
dmick89,
I am not. It costs one day to assuage Hammel’s ego so they can get a great performance out of him and send him to a team as part of a trade for a real stud.

It must really kill another team making errors against the Cubs. I mean, they’re already such a good offensive team, giving them extra outs is just unfair.

Wenningtons Gorilla CockQuote Reply
Do the Cubs not even bother having their pitchers hold runners? I think they should just stop having their catchers practice trying to throw runners out. There’s no point in trying since the catcher never has a chance. This Cubs team does a lot of things very, very well, but they can’t hold runners for shit.

Couldn’t watch or listen, but a recap I read elsewhere said that we had a couple of runners on in the 6th with two outs, and Maddon had Henricks hit for himself? Seems like at least an arguably bad decision. & one of the few things Maddon does a lot that I don’t like. Grr.
UrkQuote Reply
Random question, anyone know what the Kerry Wood of GB% performance is? What’s the most # of ground ball outs a pitcher has gotten in a game? Or the best GB% for a complete game?
MillertimeQuote Reply
The Cubs are now only +14 (RS-RA)-(2nd best RS-RA).
ceruleanQuote Reply
“I couldn’t even begin to think about knowing how to answer that question.”
ceruleanQuote Reply
cerulean,
Is that a West Wing reference?
MillertimeQuote Reply
The Cubs’ WPA was just above 50% when Hendricks came to bat in the fifth. That’s why I was so frustrated when Maddon let him hit (or bunt) for himself. And, as has been mentioned, it was the third time through the order for Kyle. Very bad managerial decision.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
This is the primary reason I’ve softened my resistance to the DH over the years. Managers give their pitchers way too many at-bats in key situations.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Millertime,
Boy, I don’t know.
berseliusQuote Reply
We’re going to remember today as the day the Cubs came crashing back to earth. Today is the day we learned they were not a historically great team, they’re only the best team in all of baseball this season. Such a disappointing day for Cubs fans.
dmick89Quote Reply
FanGraphs tracks GB% by player by season, but I’m not sure how you’d find it for an individual game.
Wenningtons Gorilla CockQuote Reply
If you go into an individual player, you can check out their game logs, but I was only able to pull up game logs for 1 player at a time. Maybe it’s just too much data.
MillertimeQuote Reply
Without a database, I don’t think you’re going to be able to find that info unless someone else has already done the work.
dmick89Quote Reply
Also, I don’t know how far groundball data goes back. Looks like Fangraphs doesn’t have GB% prior to 2002. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=104&position=P

I’ve made a few edits to the comment rating thingy. I’ve gotten rid of the leading text. I’d always planned to comment that out so it didn’t display. Only way to make it look decent with the images that size would have been to use the same size font and that would have been huge. Besides, I think everyone knows what to do and if they don’t, oh well. Poorly rated comments are now colored red (see comment 56 in this thread). I might soften the green and red colors in the future, but I’d first have to change the color of the comment date and time text. Comments are set to be hidden at 100 dislikes. I thought about getting rid of that feature entirely, but I figure if it has 100 dislikes, it probably deserves to be hidden. I might try to find some vector icons of the fisted hand and middle finger to create some icons that are a little clearer at 20 px.

Lineup today is righty loaded. Smarter people than I on the interwebs have suggested that it is because the RHP has a sizable reverse split.

His splits are definitely reversed at this point and by a whole lot, but it’s a small sample. Still, it’s probably worth the righty heavy lineup.
