JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 4-21-13

Iowa Cubs 0 @ Memphis Redbirds 1

It’s not easy writing about the Iowa Cubs. They are easily the least interesting team in the Cubs organization. Hell, the team in Chicago is even more interesting. We get paid the big bucks to do it so here we go.

It was Hide Your Children Day in Memphis as Brent Lillibridge made his 2nd straight start. He was 1-4. The Cubs had only 6 hits and no runs so the children didn’t miss much. Brian Bogusevic and JC Bocsan had the best days for the Cubs as each were 1-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Impressive.

Brett Jackson’s new swing was a late-inning replacement, but never batted. Logan Watkins didn’t start, but got 2 at-bats and struckout once.

Drew Carpenter allowed 2 hits in 5.2 innings, but walked 5 and struckout 6. He didn’t allow any runs. Hisanori Takahashi pitched 1.1 innings and struck a batter out. Yoanner Negrin pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowed 2 hits and the only run of the game.

Montgomery Biscuits and Gravy 9 @ Tennessee Little Smokies 6

Alberto Cabrera struckout only 1 and walked 4 over 5.1 innings. He also allowed a home run, a total of 5 hits and 4 runs. Marcus Hatley threw 1.2 innings, allowed a hit and struck a batter out. Kevin Rhoderick gave up 4 hits and 2 runs in an inning. He struckout 1. Trey McNutt threw 2 perfect innings and struckout 1. Tony Zych got the loss in the 11th inning as he gave up 3 hits, a walk and one run.

Matt Szczur was 1-4 with 2 walks and a strikeout. Rubi Silva was 2-5 with a double and Johermyn Chavez was 1-4 with a double and a walk. Anthony Giansanti was 2-2 with a double and a walk.

Ronald Torreyes was 0-1. I’ll have more on him later today.

Daytona Cubs 1 @ Dunedin Blue Jays 9

The Cubs pitchers sucked (one of them didn’t). The offense had only 2 hits. Fun game.

Ryan Searle gave up 6 hits and 5 runs over 4 innings. He surrendered 2 home runs, walked 2 and struckout 4. Austin Reed struckout 2 and walked no one in his 2 innings of work. Sounds great. Nope. He gave up 6 hits and 4 runs.

David Cales allowed just one hit in 2 innings, no runs, no walks and struckout 3.

Tim Saunders and Jorge Soler were each 1-4. Zeke DeVoss, John Androli and Micah Gibbs each walked. Nobody else did anything. Javier Baez didn’t start, but got 2 plate appearances later in the game. He was 0-2 with 2 strikeouts.

Peoria Chiefs 6 @ Kane County Cougars 7

Tyrell Jenkins struckout 7 and walked 0. That’s about as good as you can ask for when. A lot of balls did fall in for hits (7) and due to the number of batters faced he pitched only 4 innings. Corey Baker gave up 5 hits and 4 runs in 2 innings of work. Jhonny Polanco didn’t give up any hits or walks in 2 innings and struckout 2.

Pin-Chieh Chen was 2-4 with a double. Marco Hernandez was 1-4 with 2 strikeouts. Dan Vogelbach was 0-3 with the team’s only walk.

Jeimer Candelario and Oliver Zapata were 1-4. Rock Shoulders and Chadd Krist were each 2-4. CF Trey Martin was 3-4.

DJ, I’m going to keep bringing up the 49ers until you get over the Super Bowl and start contributing again.

Today’s attempt is my latest mock. This one, however, is who I would take based on who I think will be available at each pick. I’m not doing trades, but that’s my Plan A. I’d move up and take Tank Carradine. He’s exactly what this team needs. I’d also try to get another first rounder next year, when it’s looking like there will be quite a few more impact players.

    1. Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama: 3-down NT no matter the scheme. Still has some technique issues and needs to improve base strength, but has the potential to anchor a defense.
2a. DJ Hayden, CB, Houston: Without the medical scare, this kid is a Top 20 pick. Might be the most talented CB in the draft.
2b. Vance McDonald, TE, Rice: Delanie Walker was the key to that inverted wishbone formation we used so much last year. We need another HB/TE to fill that role. I like McDonald or your personal favorite Chris Harper for that spot.
3a. DJ Swearinger, S, SoCar: Goldon’s replacement is a great value here. I still think Culliver is the best FS on the roster, but I’ll defer to SF on this one.
3b. David Quessenberry, OL, SJSU: Competition questions. Looked as good as the top OL during the Senior Bowl practices.
4a. Brian Schwenke, C, Cal: My No. 1 C in the draft.
4b. William Gholston, DE, MichSt: Potential to be a top starter at 5-tech. Effort questions.

Rubi Silva’s start to the season kind of has me excited. He was a pretty big bonus baby IIRC. Hopefully he has sustained success from here on out and be an option for next year. His ISO is 130 points higher than last year. I don’t expect that to continue but I hope it can stay around .180 and show he put in hard work to increase his power.

He can play some CF so next year we might have more than Brett Jackson’s New Swing as an internal option.

    @ GW:
It does make you wonder if he has vision problems. It almost seems more likely to me that he just has dulled reaction times. Granted, they were exercising a clever use of selection bias.

    @ Rice Cube:
Because Choo is a leadoff hitter who is good at OBP, so he’s gotta be fast and good at CF, whereas Bruce hits home runs and stuff, so he has to be slow and muscular.

    @ josh:
I thought the non-Sullivan/Gordo reporters determined that Sveum never actually referred to Rizzo or Castro by name when he made those statements, though I do think he sometimes throws Castro under the bus for the defensive fails.

    @ GBTS:

I like that. I figured that Bruce was kind of used to RF as a Red anyway, but I thought he graded better than Choo in the corner so logically that should make him a better CF than Choo if they had to Choo-Choo-Choose.

    @ Rice Cube:
The comments were general, but the preceeding question was about Castro and Rizzo. It was at least intended as a vague threat, seems like. I don’t honestly think it was anything more than frustration (he also said that big league players perform at a big league level every day, which is debatable).

    @ josh:
People are still talking about it like Sveum actually said it or was serious about it, which makes me wonder who’s getting the right information and who’s still getting bad memos.

    @ josh:
Whatever the truth of this particular incident, I don’t have a lot of confidence in Sveum. Though, as MO pointed out, he’s probably about as good as anyone else.
