Iowa Cubs 2 @ Omaha Storm Chasers 12
This one was ugly. The Cubs walked twice and mustered only 5 hits. They were:
Logan Watkins: 2-4, 3B, 1 RBI, 1 SO
Brett Jackson 2: Red, White and Bad: 1-3, 2B, 1 RBI
Brian Bogusevic: 1-2, 1 BB
Alberto Gonzalez: 1-3, R
Ian Stewart was 0-2 with a walk for the only other hint of offense. Stewart also had his 3rd error and is batting .103 for the season. He's ready.
Drew Carpenter sucks much like Lendy Castillo does. He went 3.0 IP and allowed 7 ER (8 R) on 9 hits and 2 walks. He's sporting a lucky 7.77 ERA this year. Cory Wade is similarly useless, allowing a trio of runs in 2 innings of work. Casey Coleman finished up the shit show allowing a solo shot to David Lough in the 7th. He pitched 1.2 innings and surrendered that run alone.
Lakeland Flying Tigers 5 @ Daytona Cubs 1
John Andreoli went 2-4 with an RBI and a strikeout. He's batting .329 on the year, so go him. He's similar to Campana in his lack of power and great speed (his line this year is .320/.441/.387), but he has better plate discipline than Campana ever did. Unfortunately, his extreme lack of power means that pitchers are going to right at him so he needs to bulk up a little bit to be effective. Javier Baez had another nice day at the dish, going 1-3 with a double and a walk. In his last 10 games, Baez has hit .351/.366/.568, which is what I'd expect him to do over the course of the season. He still needs to walk more (3/28 SO/BB ratio), but at least he isn't completely bombing (yet). Jorge Soler has quietly crashed back to earth. He went 0-4 and has just a .268 OBP over his last 10 games. He's looked poor ever since his suspension. He also can't hit away (in an admittedly tiny sample size). The only other extra-base hit was a double from Ben Carhart, who went 2-4. The Cubs had 5 walks and struck out 5 times.
Austin Kirk allowed 7 hits, a walk, and 2 HR over 5 IP. Surprisingly, he only surrendered 4 runs. He struck out 2. Luis Liria had a one in every stat line except HR. Sheldon McDonald allowed a hit and a walk over 2, but stranded them both. Eduardo Figueroa had his second good appearance in a row with a nondescript ninth. His ERA is down to 2.84.
Kane County Cougars 5 @ Fort Wayne TinCaps 3
Gioskar Amaya kept his error streak at 2 games with a throwing error today. He went 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Pin-Chieh Chen went 1-3 with a walk. Daniel Vogelbach went 1-2, but was then pulled for a pinch hitter. I don't think it was an injury (nothing on his twitter), so that's good. Jeimer Candelario went 0-4 with a walk and a run scored. He also pulled out a tweet from the Yogi Berra playbook:

He's actually got a pretty good twitter account, so I'd recommend you follow him. He only started 4 days ago (Finally I make the tweeter) so you can get on the ground floor. Rock Shoulders went 0-3 with a walk, a strikeout, and a run scored. Wes Darvill had a 2 hit game with a SO and an RBI. Finally, Oliver Zapata ripped a triple and a walk, scoring both times.
Tayler Scott had a Quality Start, going 6 IP with 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 4 SO. Brian Smith picked up the win in relief, walking none and stranding 2 of 3 hits with 3 strikeouts.

I’ve been kind of surprised to see Cory Wade performing so poorly. He had good years with the Dodgers and Yankees on 2008 and 2011. It’s almost as if reliever performances are volatile and subject to a lot of variance.

I’m surprised there are more attempts to steal home. You only need to be safe about 50% of the time to make it worth it and there are a lot of good baserunners who could do that IMO. Eventually you’d force a pitcher to alter his mechanics with a runner on 3rd, which would lead to better hitting too. Win win.

It’s a call that could have gone either way and there’s no argument to be made against either decision. The freeze framing replay showed he was out, but he looked safe to the naked eye. I would imagine that 9 times out of 10 that’s an out.
That’s one of the very few times where a left-handed 2nd baseman would have come in handy. (dying laughing)
