Thanks to sitrick (Vanilla Pope) for taking the weekend beat.
New Orleans Zephyrs 5 @ Iowa Cubs 3
Logan Watkins had a Logan Watkins day. Again. 1-4, RBI, 2 SO. Dave Sappelt, now in the 2 hole, went 2-4 with a run scored. Brett Jackson had a walk and an RBI (0-2). Ian Stewart continues his torrid pace, going 0-4 with 3 SO. Did I say torrid? I mean horrid.
Chris Rusin, inexplicably still on the 40-man roster, allowed 5 runs in 7 innings. He allowed 12 hits, no walks, and 4 strikeouts. He's not good. Michael Bowden returns to Iowa and has 1.2 innings of scoreless ball. Casey Coleman had the last out of the game.
This team is really, really bad. Basically, the Iowa Cubs are the Houston Astros of the PCL.
Tennessee Smokies Postponed
Daytona Cubs 5 @ Brevard County Manatees 0 (6.5 innings – rain)
Great game for the Cubs. Javier Baez went 2-4 with a run and an RBI; more importantly, he didn't have an error or a strikeout. Jorge Soler went 1-4 with a strikeout and 2 RBI. Dustin Geiger had the only XBH of the day, a double. 5 different Cubs drew a walk this day, including Taiwan Easterling.
Austin Kirk had a shutout, albeit a 6-inning one. He allowed 8 baserunners and struck out 7. He needed a good performance after a rash of poor ones.
Cedar Rapids Kernels 2 @ Kane County Cougars 3 (10 innings)
Albert Almora had another double and another walk. He went 3-4 and still paled to Dan Vogelbach's 2-4, 2B, HR, BB, day. Jeimer Candelario also had 3 hits, and Rock Shoulders contributed with 2 walks of his own including a walk-off walk at the end of the game. Marco Hernandez and Gioskar Amaya each had a hit also.
- Pin-Chieh Chen flies out to left fielder J. D. Williams.
- Albert Almora doubles (6) on a fly ball to center fielder Jeremias Pineda.
- Tyler Jones intentionally walks Dan Vogelbach.
- Jeimer Candelario singles on a line drive to right fielder Adam Walker. Albert Almora to 3rd. Dan Vogelbach to 2nd.
- Rock Shoulders walks. Albert Almora scores. Dan Vogelbach to 3rd. Jeimer Candelario to 2nd.
Michael Heesch did well. He allowed 2 runs in 6 innings. 2012 draftee Steve Perakslis had 3 innings of scoreless ball, and Eddie Orozco shut out the 10th for his 3rd win of the year.
Francisco Carrillo had 3 innings and allowed 1 unearned run. He struck out 7.
On the season, Carillo has pitched 17.1 innings. He's allowed 12 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 23 strikeouts. These are impressive numbers; however, Carillo is 23, which is ancient for the league. He was awesome for the 2012 DSL Cubs as well, so if you're looking for a lottery ticket, Carrillo might be your guy.

FWIW, the attendant did ask me to stop.
I have a very hard time believing this is true.

This it the part where I post the Gary Oldman “EVERYONE” video, but alas, I am in limbo.

Feldman, Soriano, DeJesus
I could also see James Russell being dealt.

@ dmick89:
What if they find no takers for Sori. Anyone think he’ll be back next year?

Keith Law and the Baseball America editors each have the Cubs taking Appel in their mock drafts.
dmick89Quote Reply
@ josh:
He’d probably be back if they can’t trade him. The Cubs won’t release him and waste that much money.
dmick89Quote Reply
@ dmick89:
True. It’s not like there’s anyone to get excited about that he’s blocking.

I think Garza, DeJesus, Soriano, and Marmol go up on the block. I think they only find takers for Garza and DeJesus, though.

I bet they pay almost all of Soriano’s salary to move him this offseason, if not by the deadline. If Vernon Wells can get traded, Soriano certainly can.

What would it take for the Cubs to acquire Jose Bautista? I’d love to see them get him. 15M this year and next, and a 16M option after that. Stick him at 3B or RF.

Yes. If we raise anything less than they did for Veronica Mars, we would be disappointed.

Is Gray more likely to go number 1 now or more likely to fall in the draft? I think there’s a better chance he goes 1st since he’ll be cheaper now.
