Round Rock Express 6 @ Iowa Cubs 0
Junior Lake returned. He was 1-4 at 3B and hit 6th. He was the only player to get a hit and not double; Logan Watkins, Steve Clevenger, and Donnie Murphy each had a single double. No one else had a hit.
Guillermo Moscoso had another dicey performance, allowing 3 runs in 6 innings. He also walked 5; the entirety of his damage was a 3-run HR he allowed to Solarte. Michael Bowden allowed 3 runs in 1.2 innings, and Eduardo Sanchez closed it out with 1.1 scoreless.
Jackson Generals 5 @ Tennessee Smokies 0 (7 innings)
The Smokies had 4 hits, much like the I-Cubs did. The only player that didn't have a bad game was Arismendy Alcantara. He went 1-2 with a walk. Basically, everyone else sucked.
Alberto Cabrera lasted only 5 innings and gave up all 5 runs. Trey McNutt and Zach Rosscup each pitched a scoreless inning.
Jackson Generals 2 @ Tennessee Smokies 1
Ronald Torreyes had a double, a single, and a walk. That's pretty good. Rafael Lopez had a 2-3 game with an RBI. Like the previous game, everyone else was terrible.
Eric Jokisch had a complete game loss. He only allowed 4 hits and 2 walks, but two of his own errors contributed to his 2 runs and ultimate loss.
Kane County Cougars 0 @ Burlington Bees 9
That's right. The full-season affiliates combined for 1 fucking run yesterday. These draft picks can't come soon enough. Albert Almora, Neftali Rosario, Bijan Rademacher, and Marco Hernandez each had a hit. Jeimer Candelario had 2. Everyone else just sucked.
A fielding error by Reggie Golden and Marco Hernandez contributed to Jose Rosario's awful game. He went 5 and allowed as many runs, but only 1 was earned. Brian Smith coughed up the other 4 in his 3 innings of work.
Nothing cool.
Ramon Valera: 0.1 innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, 5 runs allowed, 0 HR.

It looks like he included it in the Top 8, but yeah I agree with your other points.

Regarding Bryant’s walk rate, we’d need to know the quality of the other hitters in the lineup before we can talk about that skill translating well to the upper minors. If the average hitter behind him is Darwin Barney, well, you’d pitch around Bryant. At the same time, that would make his power numbers more impressive. For now, I’ll go with Law’s average plate discipline rating.

yeah, i was just going with 2013 data, since I’m guessing it varies a fair amount outside the top 2 or 3

I don’t get how scouts say Zuhstrizny(TM) has control trouble. He’s got a 3.4 K/BB ratio, or 2.4 BB/9, which isn’t awesome but it’s not a cause for concern. Maybe he’s going deep into counts or something?

Here are the team stats:

Not sure where he batted in the lineup, but the team itself doesn’t look too bad. 4 other players with an OPS above .800. He had >30% of his team walks.

There’s a huge difference between Bryant and the rest of the team.

I read an article last night saying they moved Bryant up to the leadoff spot because the manager was trying to get them to pitch to him more. That basically supports the “Michael Choice” hypothesis w.r.t. Bryant.

I guess all I’m saying is that absent any professional data, we’d probably be wise to go with the scouting reports. Law seems to think it’s average. BA points out how carefully he’s been pitched, but that he’s still remained patient. I take that to mean he’s not chasing a lot of pitches like a Javier Baez or Starlin Castro. That’s a good sign, but until he’s playing against talent that’s closer in talent, I don’t think the stats tell us a whole lot. They tell us, without a doubt, that the guy has ridiculous power. We know this because of the scouting, the numbers and the fact he’s been pitched carefully.
I’d much, much rather have a guy who has shown the ability to walk like Bryant has than someone who doesn’t. Like GW said, it’s encouraging. I’m just not willing to go further than that.

Yeah. it would be wise to pitch around him. Having heard virtually nothing about him before yesterday, I am liking what I see. Of course I would have been happier with Appel, but mainly because he would see the bigs sooner.
Should we expect to pay Bryant about even with slot, freeing up some money for later picks?

MLB.com doesn’t mention his patience, but they do say there is a “good amount of swing and miss” in his game.

I don’t know how good a 2.4 BB/9 rate is in that conference. Considering he doesn’t throw all that hard, you’d expect a lot of contact to be made. BA said he throws strikes, but will have to refine his command. Could be that he’s throwing too many “hittable” strikes.

Was just about to write something along these lines. He clearly has lots of power, and he clearly knows how to take a walk. We know that from the numbers, and from the scouting reports. That’s a good sign, especially when we’re wary of the lack of the ability to take a walk in other top hitting prospects in the org. As to the rest? Who knows.

ZasF7 allowed 93 hits in 90.1 innings. That’s a bit concerning to be giving up more hits than innings pitched.

FWIW, his schedule-adjusted numbers are better than his raw numbers. That’s not to say this was top-level competition like the SEC or Pac10, but it was above average:

Any idea at what point they moved him up? Wish we could easily find game by game data for college baseball.

IBB’ing a guy like Bonds often didn’t make sense for the defense even though he was so much better than the next guy. However, the difference between Bryant and the next best hitter is probably so large that you could justify pitching around him every single time he came to the plate. I’d be very surprised that the other team pitched to him in any close game in which a walk wouldn’t have scored a run.
That makes his power that much more impressive. If he hits for power, he’ll do alright with getting on base via walk even if he has average discipline. Then again, Javier Baez has real power and he doesn’t. He’s much more a free swinger than Bryant is. I guess I’d say the most encouraging thing is that despite being pitched around, he reportedly laid off pitches out of the zone. That’s good.

Something about he will have to be careful about not bring a 35 HR allowed guy…which gave me Steve Trachsel flashbacks…which made me a little depressed. But since 85% of these guys won’t make it anyway I guess a lefty version of Trachsel would be ok.

So I just realized that those 31 HR’s for the season is only in 228 AB and 62 GP. No wonder that’s insane. The next highest total in Div 1 was 21 HR in 256 AB.

And I agree – the most encouraging thing we can say about this walk numbers is that they tell us he has the ability to lay off pitches out of the zone. That, and the implications this has for his insane power numbers.

I noticed the Mets drafted a 1B at #11. Is that typical to see a 1B drafted so high?
