JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 6-12-13

In Minor Leagues by myles19 Comments

Iowa Cubs 5 @ Oklahoma City Bombers 8

Ian Stewart's goodbye game went ok, with a home run and a walk and two runs scored. Logan Watkins went 1-5. Normally, I'm a big fan of Luke's at Bleacher Nation, but I thought it was funny when yesterday he said Logan was slowly heating up. Well, he's heating up so slowly that his OPS over the last 10 games is actually lower than his season OPS, that's some kind of slow burn. Brett Jackson had his 6th home run of the year to go with a walk and 2 strikeouts. Junior Lake took a walk and a strikeout. He also had a single.

Guillermo Moscoso took the ball and allowed 3 runs over 5 innings. He only had 2 strikeouts so they were putting the ball in play quite a bit. New Cubs Alex Burnett continues to struggle, allowing 2 runs on 3 walks and a hit in his inning of work. Marcus Hatley allowed 3 runs in an inning, all unearned. Hisanori Takahashi pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Tennesse Smokies 2 @ Mobile BayBears 3

Matt Szczur and Jonathan Mota both went 2-4 with a run, the only runs the Smokies scored. Arismendy Alcantara, Christian Villanueva, Ty Wrightand Rubi Silva were 2-5 in the order and each had a single hit (Villanueva's was a double). Ronald Torreyes pinch hit and went 1-2. He came in at 2B and Alcantara slid back to SS when that happened. Alcantara also had his 16th SB of the year.

Eric Jokisch picked up the loss, but was actually quite good. He allowed 6 hits and no walks, but gave up a 2-run blast. He struck out 7, so overall a good night. Tony Zych had 1.1 innings of good work.

Burlington Bees 7 @ Kane County Cougars 6

Gioskar Amaya is in a world of trouble. His OPS is over 200 points lower this year than last. He went 1-5 with 2 strikeouts. Albert Almora went 1-4 with a walk. Dan Vogelbach had a single single. Jeimer Candelario went 3-5 with 2 doubles and a run. Big blast was from Willson Contreras, who had a 3-run HR. Reggie Golden had a double, and Marco Hernandez has a pair of singles.

Jose Rosario sucked. 5 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO, 2 HR, that's it. Shawn Camp had a rehab inning and it went fine. Brian Smith had 3 innings of scoreless work. Nice job, Brian.

Daytona was postponed. Wet Grounds.

DSL Cubs 5 @ DSL Nationals 6

Jose Zapata allowed 4 runs, none of them earned.

Cincinnati Reds 12 @ Chicago Cubs 2

The Cubs were putrid last night. The only bright spot was a solo shot by Cody Ransom. Tradewatch: Maybe you can spin Ryan Sweeney into a live arm, but probably not. He went 2-3. Matt Garza got rocked hard, allowing 9 runs in 5 innings. I stopped watching at 3-0 because I knew the lead was insurmountable, so I consider myself a winner. Carlos Villanueva did pick up a nice inning of work.

VSL Cubs 1 @ VSL Mariners 12

We have a dude named Chris Pieters on this team. He doesn't sound very hispanic. He also went 0.0 innings to start the game, allowing 5 runs on a hit and 4 walks. Hooray!!!

I started writing a fake script for the trailer, got a quarter of the way through it, then asked myself what I was doing with my life and went back to work.

So, pretty standard day over here, how’re you guys….

Last night at the game after Ransom’s 3rd error of the night, some guy in a Theriot shirsey declared, “I can’t take any more of this shit,” angrily tossed his Lemon Chill cup down, and stormed out with his friends.

So the Cubs managed to reach the breaking point of a guy who embraces shitty baseball so much that he proudly wears a Theriot shirsey. CUBS WAY!! BECAUSE WE HAVE TO!!

Yeah I enjoy all the posts, just would hate sitrick to get burnt out and depressed “damnit, another day without BS!”.

Also good write-up yesterday on Stewart. Although I was for re-signing him, it has was a low risk, low reward type of deal. I guess the gamble has pretty much failed as much as possible though. I assume your neck is feeling a little better?

I think a BS of the day is a bit too optimistic. Maybe BS of the week would be a goal more easily attainable.

This thought has occurred to me. 2nd day in and this team throws a game like that at me. Daunting. But I do feel like it’s an outlier game, and most days there’s at least something good to shine a light on. But we’ll see how it goes.

Of course, if people get sick of it, or feel like the well’s dry, I take no offense at being told to give it a rest (dying laughing)

    @ sitrick:
Just an idea (feel free to do as you wish), include one of the higher ranked prospects. If the Cubs do nothing and the top 10 or so prospects do nothing, don’t bother with a post.

    Again, it’s just an idea.

You could also include former Cubs, but that could be a lot of work depending on how much baseball you follow.

Those are good ideas. Was trying to stay away from the minors so as not to step on Myles’ toes with the JOT, but I suppose just going into one good performance wouldn’t be too bad. And I like the former Cubs idea; Tyler Colvin being terrible as reason for optimism, hah.
