JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 6-18-13

In Minor Leagues by myles50 Comments

Nashville Sounds 0 @ Iowa Cubs 7

Nick Struck had a no hitter into the 6th inning. He pitched 6.2 innings and ended up allowing 3 hits and 2 walks, for no runs. Casey Coleman had 1.1 innings of work and allowed 3 baserunners but no runs. Eduardo Sanchez pitched a scoreless ninth.

Logan Watkins had a nice game, going 2 for 4 with a walk. Brian Bogusevic picked up a start at center and went 2-3 with a walk and a K. Dave Sappelt had the big game, with 3 RBI off a single double and double singles. Junior Lake went 1-4 and stole his 8th base.

Chicago Cubs 4 @ St. Louis Cardinals 2

The Cubs scored all 4 of their runs in the first inning, the bulk of which came on back-to-back jacks by Nate Schierholtz and Cody Ransom. Both of those players are trade bait, improbably. Schierholtz could fetch a really nice piece at the deadline (think Christian Villanueva or so), while Ransom is just a bench bat that would net something similar to what Tony Campana did this offseason. Ryan Sweeney continues to impress while being up. Sweeney has the look of a guy who could play CF everyday on a bad team, which he just so happens to be on. I'm not entirely sure I don't give him that starting job if/when DeJesus is traded (instead of Brett Jackson) and see what he can do. ZiPS projects an 83 wRC+ the rest of the way, mainly predicated on regression to SLG and BABIP (both at career highs). The BABIP, I can buy, but even in the minors he's shown power he's never had before (and at 28, it's probably a hair late to attribute that to body development). Even if he goes back to his pre-2013 numbers, he isn't killing your team (career .339 OBP). I say go for it.

Jeff Samardzija was sublime in this game. He made a mistake to Beltran but that's about it. He induced 4 double plays which allowed him to go 8.1 innings in 115 pitches. Kevin Gregg got his 10th save; his ERA is now at 0.81 (but he did allow an inherited runner to score). I maintain that Gregg probably doesn't get you more than a lottery ticket arm, but that's still a fantastic return on investment.

Daytona Cubs 14 @ Clearwater Threshers 6

The Cubs hit two grand slams in this game. The first was Tim Saunders, in the 5th (part of a 3-5 day where he was a triple shy of the cycle). The second was Javier Baez, who struck out twice and also drew a walk. He also had his 27th error off of that terrible Florida field. Everyone had at least one hit. Another notable day was the 3-4, 2 BB performance of John Andreoli, who also stole a base. Zeke DeVoss had a triple and went 2-6. As a team, the Cubs outwalked their strikeouts, 6 to 4. The also had more XBH than strikeouts, with 5. You're going to win those games, usually.

Kyler Burke sucked, allowing 4 in 4. Yao-Lin Wang pitched two scoreless, than handed it off to Frank Del Valle, who allowed 3 runs in 2 innings. Only 1 was earned on his own throwing error. Those should totally still count. Sheldon McDonald allowed a run in as many innings.

Salem-Keizer Soze 9 @ Boise Hawks 2

Shawon Dunston had a nice game, raising his average to .471 with 2 hits in 3 at bats with a walk. Kevin Encarnacion also had a hit and walk. Jose Dore had 2 walks and a double, very nice. I was a big Justin Marra fan after last season, but he's yet to get off the schnide with an 0-4, 2 K day. David Bote had a solo shot in 4 AB. It's still incredibly early, so none of this is a huge deal.

Trey Lang had the start and allowed 5 runs in 4 innings. Ouch. Jasvir Rakkar, who sounds like a villain in a video game, went 2 innings and allowed just 3 runs. Matt Iannazzo allowed an unearned run in 2 frames, and Carlos Martinez-Pumarino has too long of a name. He allowed no runs on no hits and no walks in the 9th inning. He's CMP from now on.

DSL Yankees1 9 @ DSL Cubs 10

I got really confused at this DP. (Paula, A-Pena, Jh-Paula, A). For some reason I kept thinking "Paula to A-Pena to Jh-Paula, A?) I'm not a smart man.

Pac Bell was awesome. Was great to watch a game with fans who are used to a successful team. Made me miss the 2008 Cubs.

I also got the true SF experience by freezing my balls off at a baseball game in the middle of fucking June (dying laughing).

    Holy. Shit.

Did Alvin really write all that or was I dreaming? If he did, he just set a record for most words used to say nothing.

Let me edit that for you, Alvin:

    I sad.

It would have been a week’s worth of material for me back in the day.

By the way, I resisted the urge to bring up several football topics here recently. I did it just for you guys.

Not sure if you saw this the other day, but Uncle Dave was looking for some Austin recs for a bachelor’s party he was planning. GW and I suggested some stuff to do (namely, go to Franklin’s) but maybe you know some other recs.

    @ Berselius:

For a bachelor party? Back in my day, the best choices were Sugar’s and the Yellow Rose.

For food, I’d hit up Franklin’s like you suggested. Also, Kerbey Lane and probably the Trudy’s on campus.

    For activities…man, whatever you want.

You should offer to be BCB Editor in Chief and post that as an example of how you can tidy things up a bit.

    That could be fun.

A week? His warning to SK alone would have gotten us through a week.

    @ Mish:

Which brings me to a complete left turn that is totally unrelated to the first half of this article, and that is this: People die. Prospects are just people that are not dead yet.

    In the history of ever
no prospect that I have mentioned has made it to the major leagues. That’s why they are in the minor leagues in the first place because they are not good enough.

    HERE ARE SOME NUMBERS

Kinda fun how we just had an article a few days ago about how many of the regular ACB/OV posters have been gone lately, yet here comes Al with his raging stupidity and we all come back. Even Ryno showed.

dylan, stop jacking off to Collin Klein and talk 49ers with me. Word is that Vernon Davis is working exclusively at WR in camp, which makes me think I had the off-season all wrong…

I now think Vance McDonald will be the inline TE instead of the H-back in the diamond formation. I bet Marquies Gray is showing enough in camp to win Delanie Walker’s H-back position.

McDonald inline, Davis split wide, Miller and Gray in the backfield with Gore/James/Hunter at TB will be a matchup nightmare for defenses.

Thanks, guys. I’m getting the feeling that there’s no shortage of places to eat in that town…

B, enjoying San Francisco? If you have the time you should hop on BART and check out downtown Oakland, couple of great places to drink there these days. (I can’t stop with the boosterism, sorry about that…)

When I saw the tagline for the post (“This is long. Please read every word.”) I had a moment when I thought someone hacked his facebook or SBN accounts to mock him.

Cubs went overslot again for the 3rd round CF pick. Is anyone keeping tabs on the cumulative numbers, and what kind of impact it’s going to have on Bryant?
