JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-28-13

In Commentary And Analysis by myles26 Comments

Omaha Storm Chasers 2 @ Iowa Cubs 5

Mike Olt went 1-2 with 2 walks.

Kyle Hendricks continues to be damn impressive this year. He went 8 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs. He walked 1 and struck out 4. His K% hovers around 20%, even with the promotion to Iowa, and the only real difference is a slight increase in HR/9, which SSS aside is expected with the increased level of competition (and it's still low).

Dunedin Blue Jays 2 @ Daytona Cubs 6 (7 innings)

I'm trying to think of a clever name for a HR from Kris Bryant. So far I've got a giant from Bryant, a Kris Krush, and a Bryant Bash. These are all terrible so please help me out. In any case, he hit another bomb in this one, along with another notch in the Geiger Counter. Ben Carhart had a pair of hits as well. Pin-Chieh Chen had a nice game, with a single to go with a pair of walks.

C.J. Edwards had a rough go of it, and I'm slightly concerned about his inability to go more than 4 and change innings. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk, though he of course still fanned 5. Kyler Burke finished the 7-inning affair with 2.2 spotless innings of his own.

Dunedin Blue Jays 0 @ Daytona Cubs 3 (7 innings)

Dan Vogelbach had 2 walks and went 0-1; Bryant just went 0-3. Wes Darvill was the sound and the fury, with a double and two singles accounting for 2 of the runs the Cubs scored (Bryant was the other). Bijan Rademacher had a pair of RBIs, with a walk and a single.

Yao–Lin Wang took the start and allowed a single hit in 4 innings. Ryan Searle allowed the same in 3 innings for a really nice performance.

Kane County Cougars 9 @ Cedar Rapids Kernels 1

Jeimer Candelario belted a home run and a double in this one. Reggie Golden didn't get a hit in this one, but everyone else had exactly one (besides Candelario). Carlos Escobar's one hit was a big fly as well.

Scott Baker was the blade in his rehab start. He allowed one hit over 5 innings, walking none and fanning 2. Jose Arias was wild, walking 6 in his 2.2 innings. Stephen Perakslis pitched the remaining 1.1 without incident.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6 @ Boise Hawks 10

#4 (Jacob Rogers), #5 (Yasiel Balaguert), and #6 (Justin Marra) each went deep in this one. Jacob and Yasiel's were back-to-back. Marra added a double, Rogers a pair of singles. Kevin Encarncion had a real nice night, going 4-5. David Bote had a pair of walks. Carlos Penalver doubled and walked.

I’d like to hear something regarding Edwards never going over 5 innings. Has there been anything from Thoyer that they don’t think he can be a starter? I’d like to hear the reasoning for him always coming out after 5 innings.

why doesn’t kyle hendricks get more love? i’ve been thrilled with this guy so far and have pretty high hopes for him. is it strictly because he was the throwaway piece in the dempster deal? because he’s progressed pretty fucking nicely since then. he doesn’t throw all that hard but he also gives up like zero walks. i’d rank him as a top 5 o-prospect for sure.

Because he gets by on command and pitchability rather than pure stuff. That’s good for dominating double-A, but may not always translate to AAA or the majors. The fact that he’s maintaining good consistency at Iowa is a positive sign, and I think opinions on him have improved as the year has progressed. He’s going to have to be absolutely pinpoint to be successful in the majors, though, and nobody will really know if he can do that until he gets there.

It’s either an innings limit (he’s already almost doubled his innings workload from last season in pro ball) or he’s not being efficient getting all those Ks. We’ll know better once he gets to AA and can see pitch counts.

    @ sitrick:
As I pointed out, his innings haven’t really gone up. Same number over last 14 starts as a year ago. Edwards pitched in extended spring training before short season A ball last year. His official innings total have gone up, but it’s unlikely his overall work has increased much at all from March through August.

    @ EnricoPallazzo:
I think it’s because guys with Hendricks’ skillset are relatively easy to acquire every year. Junkballers that get by on locating and pitch mix…I mean, isn’t that what the Cubs signed for dirt cheap contracts this past winter? Having a cost-controlled 4/5 is certainly valuable, but the prospect lists and hype machines are going to value higher risk, higher ceiling guys because starters with 7 fastballs just don’t come around as often as soft tossers with good command.

I said before that Jadeveon Clowney was a Raider, but he just didn’t know it yet. I’m here to amend that post.

I think the bottom three teams in the NFL this year are OAK, JAX and NYJ, and it’s not particularly close. No matter the order, I think Oregon QB Marcus Mariota ends up a Raider, Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater ends up a Jag and Clowney ends up a Jet.

I also think Clemson QB Tajh Boyd is right up there with the other QBs, but will be penalized for his height. So some team in the middle of the first round (Arizona) is going to get great value with him.

And because I know my audience, I think the Bears end up picking FSU DT Tim Jernigan and GB takes TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

dylan’s being too much of a P for me to post my Niners thoughts.

Ryno, did the 9ers trade for a WR recently from the Chiefs? It wasn’t Bowe was it? I read something that said they traded their 1st round pick for a WR from the Chiefs but I can’t find anything else about it.

    @ JonKneeV:

    Vernon Davis – 9
    Anquan Boldin – 6
    Vance McDonald – 5
    Michael Crabtree – 4
    Quinton Patton – 3
    Frank Gore – 2
    Kyle Williams – 2
    Bruce Miller – 1
    MarQueis Gray – 1

    @ Berselius:

There will be a drop off, but not as much as you might think Crabtree is basically a younger Boldin who is a little faster and not quite as strong. But they win the same way: Routes, strength and positioning.

Crabtree’s injury will give Patton a chance, and I think he’ll make the most of it. I thought Patton was a second-round talent.

Now the thing I’m looking for is how much they use Vance McDonald. I look for them to line up with McDonald and davis at TE, Boldin at WR and create mismatches with power formations.

I’ll be quite fucking disappointed if an announcer doesn’t say “Bryant burned the bleachers with back-to-back bombs. Boy, oh boy, he blasted those balls” the first time he hits consecutive homers.

Las Vegan Longballs is my contribution, but I think it might be worse than Myles’.
