I didn’t stay up for the game so I don’t know if anyone pointed this out at the time, but Molina clearly does not tag Mark Ellis on that play at the plate in the 10th inning.

But when you look at this GIF, it’s clear that it’s an illusion. Ellis’ left forearm that looks like it’s being tagged in the picture is clearly making contact with Yadi’s arm well below his glove.

I’m all for eliminating collisions at home plate, so I’m okay with giving this call to the catcher when in doubt. But on the other hand, doesn’t this incentivize hitting the catcher even harder? If the catcher is getting the benefit of the doubt as long as he holds on to the ball, regardless of whether he actually makes the tag, baserunners are going to have more reason to completely obliterate the guy.

Without benefit of replay, the ump’s angle would suggest that the glove touched the elbow. The stills and replays from TV were inconclusive from my point of view, but I’m also wearing glasses and don’t have the best vision/perception in the world. I don’t think replay would have absolutely overturned the call though.

Both groups violate the rules and until they’re called as they should, I’m completely fine with calls like that. A replay probably doesn’t overturn that one and I’d lean toward calling it the correct call anyway, regardless of whether the glove technically tagged him or did not. Maybe that’s because I’ve just become used to those being outs. It could be. However, I look at that play and I ask myself, is that an out, and the answer is yes. Do I think those plays should happen? No. The catcher should not be allowed to block the plate and the baserunner should be out if he disrupts the fielder from making the play. This shit doesn’t happen at 2nd or 3rd base. You don’t see runners bowling a 3rd baseman over on a force out. Does not happen and there’s no reason it should happen at home.
