I was really impresed by the fangraphs project when the lincecum deal was signed because the fans were pretty close on a contract that everyone was seeing as a huge surprise. they were 5million more for one more year. People thought the giants would pay up to keep their best marketing piece. Lincecum is just a really unique player in that he is beloved in SanFran for good reason. Two World Series, 2 cy youngs and a no hitter, plus his cool freakness may not add more wins in the future, but they certainly help sell tickets and jerseys.

If you’re defending the Hayden Simpson pick, your argument starts and ends with “In the immediate wake of the sale, the organizational budget was painfully tight, and the big payroll with the major league club limited available funds for the draft. The organization looked at their budget and the draft landscape and thought it was best to spread what little money they had throughout the entire draft instead of taking a safer bet with a higher pick that was likely to cost much more.”
That’s still a shitty argument, but it’s an argument you can make while just being wrong instead of wrong and sounding completely detached from reality.

He gave 110% for that clutch performance.

Yeah, there really is no defending that pick. They still paid him close to slot money. You could take the worst player in the draft at that pick and you’re still going to pay him a lot of money. There were literally 100 better picks at that spot than Simpson.
There is no defending it. It was a horrible pick at the time and you just hoped they got lucky.
I am glad Tim Wilken is gone. I was excited when they hired him, but he sucked. He must have had someone telling him what to do in Toronto because on his own, he fucking sucked. I’m positive that Hayden Simpson would have been more qualified for Wilken’s job than Wilken was. He was that bad.
