Teams have inquired on Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija and the Blue Jays are putting together a package of young players to try and land him, a source tells Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com (on Twitter). For his part, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos didn't deny that he has discussed Samardzija with Chicago in an interview with Jim Bowden of SiriusXM (onTwitter). Even though Anthopoulos is looking into starters, he insisted that he has yet to make an offer to anyone (link). — MLBTR
We've written extensively about Samardzija here so no need to rehash what was already written.

This is nonsense. Cano will get paid big money, but somehow this has done him a world of harm. Don’t get it. I expect better from the best Cubs beat reporter.

no comment on the “harm” of it, but if I was him, no way in hell do I switch from Boras to an inexperienced agency coming into free agency.

I guess so, because the Cardinals just pulled the trigger.

Agreed. That was a dumb decision at the time and will most likely end up being a dumb decision. The choice to say you want $310 million will have zero impact on what he ends up getting. Ryan Theriot could state he wants $320 million and it won’t have any impact. I’m actually surprised more players don’t throw out numbers that are just ridiculous.
dmick89Quote Reply
@ Rice Cube:
That’s probably fairly close. If the win is $7 million over 4 years, they’re paying him for about 7-8 wins.

Haren to the Dodgers:

One year/$10 million with a 2015 option vesting at 180 innings.
I would have liked to see the Cubs sign him, especially at that price. If he pitched as well in the first half of next year as he did the second half of last year the Cubs would have been able to flip him for some decent prospects.
JimLQuote Reply
I don’t see the Cubs signing a potential bounce back guy like Haren. Jake Arrieta is just as likely if not more likely to out produce him. Arrieta would be more valuable in a trade too if he sticks.

If the Cubs trade Samardzija, are there still any pitchers left in FA that would be able to fill in for Samardzija in 2014 or 2015? Other than Tanaka?

I like that in the Dodgers’ quest to get ALL TEH PITCHERS they now have both parts of the failed Marmol/Haren trade.

Depends on how you value Samardzija. There’s an outside chance Kershaw gets to FA next year, in which case good fucking luck signing him. If you value Shark as a mid-rotation guy (which his results have been despite good peripherals), then obviously there are a few of those guys. It’s hard to know because half of the ’15 FA will be extended beforehand. If the Cubs trade Shark, it’s pretty much mandatory to get good young pitching for him (though I’d also accept an impact OF bat).

Arrieta would have more value in a trade if he had a great first half, but the odds of that are fairly slim. Haren is definitely more likely to put in the kind of first half that would get you something valuable at the deadline.

Weekly draft update:
If SF wins tonight. If WAS wins, TB picks 5th.
1. JAX – Clowney. I’m really starting to think the QB depth makes this happen.
2. HOU – Bridgewater. Who would have guessed?
3. ATL – Barr. They need pass-rushing youth.
4. MIN – Mariota. If he still declares…
5. STL (from WAS) – Jake Matthews. RG3 trade strikes again.

Not sure I want the Bears to win. They will get smoked by anyone with a RB that has legs. Considering picking up AP’s backup this week for fantasy since AP will most likely be tired after breaking the NFL’s all time single game rushing record in the first quarter.

If the Texans were to get Watt and Clowney on the same defensive line would the NFL have to institute the “can’t rush the QB until you count to five-Mississippi” rule?

Weekly playoff update:
AFC
1. DEN
2. NE
3. IND
4. CIN
5. KC
6. TEN
NYJ, MIA, PIT, BAL and SD are all tied with TEN. They all have tough schedules. No idea who will emerge from that group. I don’t think it matters, though, as DEN and NE are clearly the class of the conference. IND could sneak through if they get their shit together by then.
NFC
1. SEA
2. NO
3. DET
4. DAL
5. CAR
6. ARI (SF would be here if they win tonight)
CHI, GB and PHI are right there too. In the North, everyone controls their own destiny. If Rodgers is healthy for Thursday’s game, I think GB takes the division. If not, I think CHI takes it. DET has tough games and they’re just stupid.
CAR looks like they forgot how to lose. They have a few tough games coming up, but they can beat anyone, anywhere.
The No. 6 seed is interesting. It’s possible for a North team to take it, but I think it comes down to SF and ARI. SF plays @ARI to finish the season, and that could very well decide who gets the final playoff spot.

The NFC is a lot more wide open than I thought it would be this year. SEA has looked vulnerable at home. NO is tough, but they’re very beatable by certain types of teams. This is definitely a year to just get in and see what happens. Look at what BAL did last year with zombie Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

Wade Phillips and those two would be lethal. You could line up each over a T and basically neutralize every OL but the C. You could put Watt over the A gap and Clowney over the T and make one side of the O-line shit their pants before the snap.

From what I said about Peralta in my previous article
“Jhonny Peralta is the only real get here, and even he is coming back from a 50-game suspension. If we look at the Melky Cabrera situation, I’d assume that Peralta gets something relatively similar (I don’t know what the PED penalty is). Does 3/27 sound reasonable? Really, I have no clue what Peralta will get, and he’s probably going to get a foolish-looking deal.”
