The Cubs re-signed Darnell McDonald to a minor league contract on the non-tender deadline.
#Cubs re-sign OF Darnell McDonald to minor league deal. Career .285/.353/.453 vs big league LHPs. Played 25 G for Chicago in 2013.

This removes McDonald from the 40-man roster and is essentially the Cubs non-tendering him and re-signing him. McDonald has hit lefties well throughout his career, but that's about it. He waasn't very good at Iowa last year.
The Cubs still have 10 players who are arbitration eligible. Most of them will get tendered a contract today.
Jeff Samardzija (4.028): $4.9MM
Nate Schierholtz (5.078): $3.8MM
Travis Wood (3.004): $3.6MM
Darwin Barney (3.053): $2.1MM
Daniel Bard (3.079): $1.8625MM
James Russell (4.000): $1.7MM
Luis Valbuena (3.148): $1.5MM
Pedro Strop (2.156, Super Two): $1MM
Donnie Murphy (4.043): $1MM
Mat Gamel (3.059): $500K
UPDATE: the Cubs non-tendered Daniel Bard who performed horribly in his brief winter league action.

McDonald is probably the difference between winning the division and winning 65 games.

Dodgers beat writer tweeted that one of the options MLB is proposing for NPB posting is a max-bid system where a tie would go to the team with the worst record.
That’s fantastic news for the Cubs. Are the Astros, Marlins, or White Sox rumored in on Tanaka?
GBTSQuote Reply
Okay I guess that’s not accurate, now Yahoo is saying that all teams who post the max bid could negotiate.
Bummer.
GBTSQuote Reply
That makes more sense.

I’d rather it be that way anyway. More fair to the player and teams willing to spend money.

I’d rather it be the way where I get what I want.

@ dmick89:
Why would you want the winning bid in a tie going to the team with the worst record? Aren’t we hoping to the team will eventually be good enough to stop playing for the most losses possible?

I’d seriously consider Jordany Valdespin on a minor league plus NRI

–> That is incorrect, McDonald was a free agent back in October so he wasn’t on the 40 man roster to begin with.
