Ted Lilly Added to Cubs front office

Ted Lilly signed on with the Cubs FO as a special assistant, and should be around as an instructor in spring training as well as doing some scouting and stuff during the season. Even though he struggled with injuries last year and retired this offseason, he might still have been good enough to crack the Cubs rotation. Like the CBA, the new home plate collision rules are also an unexpected drag on the Cubs as Lilly will have a more difficult time instructing players how to obliterate Yadier Molina.

Did we even go over the BA top 100?

The best (IMO) prospect list of the offseason (Baseball America) was released a week or two ago. We were all busy partying on the OV yacht that we bought with our intellectual property money to give it much notice, but this is how the Cubs did.

Much better than when Thoyer took over, when the list was

  • 38. Brett Jackson
  • 61. Javier Baez
  • 64. Matt Szczur
  • Cashner wasn't on the list at this point, not sure if he had lost his 'prospect' elgibility

More prospects chatter #insidejokehashtag

BP's Jason Parks visited the Cubs new facilities the other day and was impressed. He had a few comments on the Cubs top guys, but it's mostly scout-ese so I can't really add anything to it. He was really impressed by Almora especially, and thinks any defensive issues Baez has are coachable. He also says that Baez has the highest ceiling of any of the elite prospects out there, so (don't) get excited Cubs fans.

OV's owner-in-chief does good work

Benevolent Internet Overlord Harry Pavlidis, along with Dan Brooks, published a big study on catcher framing to BP yesterday. Probably the biggest surprise was that not only is Yadi a great defensive catcher, he's matched with the staff that's best suited to shaving the edges of zones via framing. Just one more reason to admire/hate those assholes. No Cubs players of note showed up on either of the best or worst lists by the new metric.

    CHI

Not sure about some of the draft slots, but CHI fans should be pretty happy if it goes this way:

14 DT AARON DONALD PITTSBURGH – You know.
51 S JIMMIE WARD NORTHERN ILLINOIS – You know.
82 DE DEMARCUS LAWRENCE BOISE STATE – Maybe the most underrated edge player in this draft at the moment.
113 CB KEITH MCGILL UTAH – Looks like a SEA DB, but not as fluid. Should be fine in CHI’s scheme.
    144 S MARQUESTON HUFF WYOMING – S/CB tweener, perhaps.

    SF

The draft simulator is catching up.

    30 S CALVIN PRYOR LOUISVILLE – If he’s there, I think he’s the pick 100 percent. I don’t think he’s there, though.
56 WR DONTE MONCRIEF MISSISSIPPI – Absolutely what this team needs. Baby Dez Bryant.
61 CB E.J. GAINES MISSOURI – Fits right into this defense.
77 OT JOEL BITONIO NEVADA – Easy bpa here. Mean, athletic OL looks like all the other SF OL.
94 WR MARTAVIS BRYANT CLEMSON – Raw, but could end up being the deep threat this offense needs.
125 QB LOGAN THOMAS VIRGINIA TECH – Best case scenario for Thomas.
158 CB AARON COLVIN OKLAHOMA – If SF uses all their picks (which they won’t), they need a few RS players like this.

On this team, he could start opening day and hit 6th in the lineup.

That was my immediate thought as well. My secondary thought was that Mick Gillespie is a really good announcer and that Ron Coomer sucks so far.

I’ve thought that Coomer is a big improvement over Moreland, though it’s been really off-putting to hear references to ‘Ron’ and ‘Ronnie’.

I was actually a fan of Moreland, though I think I was the only one. Honestly, when Hughes retires, I’d be angry if anybody BUT Gillespie got the job.

    @ Myles:

I preferred Moreland when he used to fill in for Santo, but didn’t really like him after he got the everyday gig. He and Pat Hughes never seemed to have great chemistry, but so far it looks like Coomer and Hughes work together a lot more smoothly.

With JD in the TV booth now it’s a lot harder to pick between the broadcasts. I usually go with the radio if I’m doing something else because it’s much easier to multitask with it.

I always opt for radio, because Pat Hughes is just so damn good. When we had to deal with Skip and Stone, I made a habit of muting the TV and listening to the radio, and I really haven’t stopped. I agree that Pat and Keith never really clicked, but I just thought that Moreland was pretty interesting. He had a pretty good handle on what was going on (a nice change of pace from the late Santo years), and he obviously put work in to keep up with what was happening in the game. Coomer could probably get there, and I’m probably too harsh on him given how early it is, but I just haven’t been impressed.

That being said, Len and JD are also really, really good. Cubs fans are spoiled with a top-flight TV broadcast and the best radio broadcast in baseball. Put them next to the White Sox broadcasts and it’s just incredible how different they are in quality. Hawk is complete dogshit, and the radio broadcast is similarly terribad.
