While everyone was busy getting high on yesterday’s National holiday, two of the Cubs minor league system were robbed of this long American tradition.
They had 6 hits, no runs and made 3 errors. Maybe only one team was robbed of observing the holiday.
Javier Baez was back in action after 10 days and struck out 3 times. He was 0-4. Matt Szczur was 2-4 and Arismendy Alcantara was 2-4. Josh Vitters was 1-2 with a walk and strikeout and Logan Watkins had the team’s other 2 hits. He was 2-4 with a double.
Carlos Pimentel threw 6 solid inning, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs. He walked 2 and struck out 5. Pretty sure Zac Rosscup was high. He walked 3 and allowed 2 hits and 3 runs in 0.2 innings. Alberto Cabrera threw 1.1 hitless innings and Neil Ramirez struck out 2 in 1 inning.
John Andreoli was 1-3 with 2 walks. Stephen Bruno and Rubi Silva each had 2 hits. Bruno was 2-4 with a double, RBI and 2 runs scored. Silva was 2-5 with 2 RBI, 2 runs scored and a strikeout. Kris Bryant continues to hit. He’s not knocking covers off of baseballs or anything, but he was 2-4 with 3 RBI and a strikeout. Dustin Geiger, Charles Cutler and Jeudy Valdez each added hits.
C.J. Edwards threw 6 very good innings. He allowed 3 hits and 2 runs. He walked 2 and struck out 4. HE’s been pretty good in his 4 starts so far, but not other-worldly like he was before. The Cubs will need more 6 innings plus performances from him if he’s going to make it as a starter. Still hard to believe a 6-2, 155 pound human will make a good starter even though there are examples. There just aren’t many of them.
Hunter Cervenka threw 2 innings, allowed 2 hits, walked 2 and allowed 2 runs. He struck out 4. Armando Rivera struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th inning.
