OSS: Max Scherzer tries to strike everybody out.
Three up:
- Addison Russell tied this game at 1 despite Max Scherzer's outstanding start. It was easily the Cubs top WPA play of the game and the second best on the day. It was a great at-bat for Russell against Scherzer before he hit the home run to break up the perfect game, no-hitter and shutout.
- Anthony Rizzo had the only other hit in this game. He was 1-3 with a strikeout.
- Jason Heyward nearly made one of the greatest plays I've ever seen in the 6th inning. The Cubs had just tied it and Wilson Ramos went deep, but Heyward had it in his glove before it bounced out. It was game over at that point.
Three down
- Kyle Hendricks gave the lead up right after the team tied it, but it wasn't a terrible start. He was great through 5 and terrible in the 6th.
- Dexter Fowler was 0-4 with 3 strikeouts. He didn't look good in this game. I wouldn't mind seeing him get the day off tomorrow with Albert Almora starting in CF.
- Justin Grimm didn't allow a run in 1.2 innings, but he gave up 3 hits and he walked a batter.
Next up: John Lackey vs. Gio Gonzalez on Tuesday at 6:05 pm.

It was just one of those games. Scherzer doesn’t suck.

ClayDick got a few batters out. He’s in the best shape of his life.

That was the best PA I’ve seen Addy take all year.

I didn’t watch or listen to this game. The highlight of Heyward missing catching that homerun is the video that plays when you go to MLB.com.

Fowler in June:
1.9% BB
30.2% K
.188/.245/.313
He needs a day off.

Mucker,
No YOU need a day off!

I’m not aware of any evidence that off-days are an effective remedy for slumps.

I’m generally a null hypothesis guy. Fowler probably isn’t as bad as his recent numbers just as he was never as good as his early-season numbers. Variance happens.

Rizzo the Rat,
I don’t mean he needs a day off to fix his problems. I just mean he needs a day off because I’m sick of watching him lately.

On the other hand, if Maddon sees for to rest him, I wouldn’t second-guess him, either.

Cubs are really struggling in June, going merely 8-4 (108 win pace).

Myles,
Hopefully they can stop the bleeding eventually.

The Cubs will probably not win another game. I just want to prepare everyone for that.

Rizzo the Rat,
They may not be, but I some rest isn’t going to hurt him either and it seems a good opportunity to give Almora a little playing time in CF.
