OSS: Kris Bryant has a day
Three up
- Kris Bryant went 5-5 for 16 total bases. He posted a .670 WPA, as well as a 1042 wRC+ and supposedly 0.6 WAR according to the twitters, but I think it’s a case of someone conflating WPA with WAR. Though having your season wOBA jump 21 points in one game might be enough for a WAR increase that big (dying laughing). Bryant is the only player in baseball history with a three HR, two double game.
- Rizzo, Heyward, and Contreras also had multi-hit games, though maybe not quite as impressive as Bryant’s (dying laughing). Rizzo homered and also drew two walks against the awful Reds pitching staff.
- Jake Arrieta also had a multi-hit day that included a home run, so at least he has something good to look back on in this game.
Three down:
- Arrieta had another rough outing, though someone might argue that he was pitching to the score a little bit. His pitches still seem to have way more movement than last year, and batters are laying off. This was the sixth start this season where he has walked four or more batters, something he did only once last year. His ERA was briefly ahead of Kershaw’s going into this game, but not so much anymore. Seeing Hammel’s numbers drop recently as well, it’s clear that Arrieta needs to reabsorb the portion of Essense of Beard that he gifted to Hammel this offseason.
- Not everyone got in on the hit parade today – Addison Russell went 0-5 while Zobrist was 1-6, his lone hit coming with two outs and a five run lead.
- Newest Cub Joel Peralta gave up a home run to Joey Votto in the ninth and Rondon was tasked with getting the final out. Given the number of runs scored by both sides in this game, it would be nice if the bullpen were a little more rested for the rest of the series.
Next up: Jon Lester faces John Lamb at 6:10 PM CT. The loser has to take the h.
Comments
More likely, it’s a reference to how his fWAR jumped from 3.3 to 3.9 overnight.

Rizzo the Rat,
As far as I can tell, fWAR is only updated overnight, and isn’t included in the live updated stat line that shows up when you visit a player page, which was the source of my confusion. Though I could just not know where to look for this.

According to Home Run Tracker, Rizzo’s home run was the longest one anyone hit last night. Bryant had the fourth longest (the second and third spots were occupied by Edwin Encarnacion).

It’s not likely, but Bryant could match his 2015 HR total by the all-star break.

berselius,
Yeah, I don’t think fWAR is updated in-game.

The stakes are high in this one.

dmick will be please to hear that Pierce Johnson went 2 innings last night and gave up 4 hits, 3 walks, 1 HR, and 5 runs.
Naturally, he struck out 0.

Another fun fact, the Iowa Cubs pitchers did not strike out a single batter last night in Game 2.

Billy McKinney is heating up. Ian Happ still doesn’t appear to be challenged through 5 games. Some guy named Jesus Castillo struck out 11 batters in 5 innings for the Eugene Emeralds. Through 10 innings and 2 starts, Castillo has allowed 6 baserunners and struck out 14.
