Big zone so far.

I wonder if the Astros regret taking Appel.

Over a high strikeout bat that won’t be able to stick at third? Nah.
ceruleanQuote Reply
I like how Javy is playing rover in the lineup today.
Rice in limboQuote Reply
This zone is enormous.
PerkinsQuote Reply
cerulean,
I don’t remember the comments about not being able to stick at 3rd. I know some scouts said he may be too big and have to move to the outfield, but from what I remember, all agreed that for the time being he was just fine at 3rd.
Wasn’t Appel at the top of the Cubs draft board that year? If that was true, I’m glad the Astros went first.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Consensus, probably. But I feel like I heard more than a few doubts from scouting reports and pundits.
I also thought the Cubs were focused on bats then, so Bryant would have been the top.
But then again, memory is faulty.
ceruleanQuote Reply
cerulean,
Yeah, I remember some doubts about his long term ability to stick there, but given his size, I’ll be a little surprised if he’s still there in 3 or 4 years. Wherever he plays though, he’ll be quite valuable.
dmick89Quote Reply
cerulean,
I think they were looking best player available and always are. I think most teams had Appel as the best player available.
dmick89Quote Reply
Kris Bryant is good at sports.
dmick89Quote Reply
I’d call this The Kris Bryant Game, but there are many stronger candidates.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Hammel is doing pretty well. He has given up some solid contact, but curiously, the solid contact accounts for none of the hits. And with good control.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
All three of the highlights feature Bryant, two on defense.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Addison!
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Why was he pitching so cautiously to Vogelsong?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Bad time to shrink the zone.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Shit.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Ugh. This inning is pissing me off.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
Because his name is Jason Hammel.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Contreras was setting up way off the plate, too.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
THROW STRIKES.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Jesus. Throw fucking strikes!
dmick89Quote Reply
Hammel!
PerkinsQuote Reply
Perkins,
(dying laughing)
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
He figuratively set himself on fire, but managed to put himself out, so…partial credit?
PerkinsQuote Reply
Not sure why he’s hitting now, though.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Dexter!
PerkinsQuote Reply
Perkins,
I’m guessing Joe wants to appease him after the fast hook last time.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Come on, Rizzo. This is Ryan Vogelsong, for Christ’s sake.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Ugh.

Contreras just swung at two terrible pitches.

ceruleanQuote Reply
The ESPN crew has been going on about how shallow the Pirates’ outfielders play, and it’s definitely burned them a few times in this game.
PerkinsQuote Reply
cerulean,
Same here. Are you watching mlb.tv? Sometimes it’s a couple pitches behind.
dmick89Quote Reply
Listening to the audio and doing other things. But yeah.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Strikes, please.
dmick89Quote Reply
That was not a good outing by Cahill.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Damnit, Grimm, throw strikes.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Cardinals lose.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I wouldn’t have thrown that pitch on a full count with the bases loaded, but hey, it worked.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Ball 4
dmick89Quote Reply
Strikes, please.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Jesus Christ
dmick89Quote Reply
This bullpen sucks ass.
dmick89Quote Reply
Seriously, this is stupid. You have to throw strikes with the bases loaded. Grimm and Contreras keep trying to paint the corners and make the batters chase. He didn’t throw a single strike to McCutchen. Aggravating.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
RUSSELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
RUSSELL!!!!
PerkinsQuote Reply
Russell! Defense wins!
ceruleanQuote Reply
Wow @ Addison Russell.
dmick89Quote Reply
J-Hey continues to do what he has the ability to do. It’s good to see.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Screw the closer, please.
PerkinsQuote Reply
What was Baez swinging at that for?
dmick89Quote Reply
Perkins,
That would be nice since the bullpen is likely to give up 3 or 4 more runs. Would also be nice if they can avoid using Chapman.
dmick89Quote Reply
I have a lot more faith in this front office because they were one of the few not to bother with Tebow.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Travis Wood facing a bunch of righties in a row. I hope this doesn’t happen in the playoffs.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Also, that walk came in to score. What a surprise.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
This fucking bullpen.
dmick89Quote Reply
Outs, please.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I hope Strop and Rondon get healthy. This current bullpen is a good step down from last year’s.
dmick89Quote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
It’s asking too much of a Cubs reliever to pitch and get outs.
dmick89Quote Reply
Ball 1. Shocking.
dmick89Quote Reply
Happy Summit?
ceruleanQuote Reply
These relievers fucking suck.
dmick89Quote Reply
You just walked on the potential tying run, you idiot.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
5 out save for Chapman, please.
dmick89Quote Reply
Jesus.
dmick89Quote Reply
The strikeout is nice, but now the tying run is in scoring position.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Extra innings?
ceruleanQuote Reply
Whew.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
cerulean,
The Cubs would have to score a few runs each inning if that happened.
dmick89Quote Reply
I shudder to think what these pitchers would do if they had to throw to a regular-sized strike zone.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Hey, I like that Javy is in the game now to sorta validate the lineup in this post haha.
Rice CubeQuote Reply
103!
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Three wild pitches. Damn.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Put Ross in to catch. Jesus.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Chapman is all over the place.
dmick89Quote Reply
Can’t anybody throw a strike?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Is that the number of wild pitches this inning?
ceruleanQuote Reply
Perkins,
I’m not sure he could have done anything with two of those.
Unbelievable!
dmick89Quote Reply
I think Chapman has spent too much time around the other Cubs relievers.
dmick89Quote Reply
104!
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
dmick89,
Maybe not, but he’d have gotten strikes out of a couple of those borderline pitches.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Chapman won’t be available for a couple days now.
dmick89Quote Reply
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Meh. The Cubs still only have a single-digit division lead…in hexadecimal.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Tonight’s relevant numbers: 85, 16, and 23.
PerkinsQuote Reply
I know the first number is walks by Cubs pitchers tonight, but what are the other two?
dmick89Quote Reply
Now I just want to watch this over and over again.

Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
The Pirates have a lot of patient hitters, but 205 pitches in a nine inning game is at least 50 pitches too many.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Hammel had 104 pitches in 6.0 innings. Not very efficient.
The bullpen had 101 in 3.0.
