OSS: Good Jake is Good.
Three up:
- Jake Arrieta looked like his old self for the first four innings of the game, with insane movement on his pitches that had the hitters guessing and great pitch efficiency. His control tailed off as the game went on, throwing a few wild pitches and seeing his pitch count rise due to needing a few extra outs, but I thought this was a good sign going forward. He also notched the Cubs first hit off of an unusually inefficient Wainwright.
- Jason Heyward was the guy who got the Cubs on the board, thanks to a single flared to LF. He also made a great catch in the later innings that would have gone for extra bases against most other RFs.
- Speaking of great catches, Albert Almora made an amazing catch to rob Matt Adams of a home run to dead center late in the game. If he can hit enough to justify more regular playing time, this should be fun to watch. Though if any team can carry two extremely glove-first guys in the lineup, it's this one.
Three down:
- Wade Davis notched his first save, but he didn't exactly inspire confidence in Cubs fans who were seeing him for the first time. His breaking stuff was not exactly crisp.
- Javy Baez was charged with two errors that led to the Cardinals lone run. It should have been just one error, but I digress. Piscotty scored that run in the hardest way possible. Javy made up for it with a great play to end the game, however inconclusive the call was (he was probably safe).
- The system that dumped snow on me out here is probably going to rain out tomorrow's game, so we get another boring off day.
Next up: John Lackey may or may not take on Lance Lynn at 12:45 PM CT

Are you saying it could go either way?

I hope the game goes 5 full with the Cubs up a touchdown before they call it.

Clayton Richard pitched 8 scoreless innings against the Dodgers.

Of course he did.

The Cubs would be 2-0 if it wasn’t for Contreras’s rally killing 3 run home run.

I’d have been ok if Schwarber was given the day off considering the weather.

dmick89,
Game postponed so Schwarber does get the day off. Make up tomorrow same time.

dmick89,
(dying laughing), I was just about to comment that the radar didn’t look as bad as the forecast was saying.

Apparently Jake’s velocity was way down last night.

Perkins,
Wainwright’s was up significantly – maybe it’s just the new tech they are using settling in. It certainly had problems earlier in the game. Not all the spring parks have the cameras but some do, you would think that someone would have noticed.

I bet Cahill throws a no-hitter tonight.

Across the league, velocity has been up by nearly a tick based on the shift from Pitch f/x to Statcast, so it’s potentially even more concerning if his velocity is down a couple ticks.
That said, he was generating strikeouts and weak contact, so I’ll take a wait and see approach.
