OSS: Cubs leave em loaded multiple times.
Three up:
- Bryant and Rizzo had solid days at the plate, and it's not their fault that the guys behind them didn't knock them in. Rizzo did it the hard way, as he was hit twice as part of both bases loaded rallies.
- It was great to see Hector Rondon back after his injury earlier this week. Folks seemed to be prepping for a blown ACL but luckily it didn't turn out so badly.
- Brian Duensing tossed a scoreless inning in his Cubs debut, putting him on track for the Shawn Camp memorial MVP award.
Three down:
- As alluded to above, the Cubs left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth inning, certainly not the most fun way to close out a game.
- Justin Grimm was knocked around in the sixth inning, though the box score doesn't look as bad as it felt at the time.
- Hendricks's velocity also appears to be down, but unlike Arrieta he does not seem to be fooling batters. As Perkins pointed out they put a lot of miles on those arms in the postseason, even if Hendricks was pulled early in game seven for possible narrative reasons. It might take a while for these guys to ramp up. I hope.
Next up: Jay Carrieta faces Tyler Glasnow in another day game.

Over/under on homeruns today?
I am going to say 5.5. It is hot and windy here are Wrigley.

I am in the right field bleachers. Any lazy fly should find the seats.

(Bryant’s was not a lazy fly)
ceruleanQuote Reply
That’s a weak home run.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
That was a lazy fly though.

Len is scrambling to revise his pre-game estimate of 4.

Russell again!!!!!!!

Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Ugh Javy, again.
SKQuote Reply
This is actually redundant. Not because he Javy’d two PAs, but because Javier = Xavier = Jesus.
SKQuote Reply
SK,
Len was just saying that Javy almost always swings on a full count.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Duensing faces another non-lefty.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
What the hell was that?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
WHY IS DUENSING FACING SO MANY RIGHTIES?!?!?!?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Unless switch-hitters are terrible from the right side, Duensing shouldn’t face them.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Duensing faced about 6 batters too many.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Jesus Christ.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Why are the Pirates getting all the wind-aided hone runs today?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
There’s no reason the Pirates should be winning this game.
PerkinsQuote Reply
About time.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Definitely time to bring back the “all is lost” pic
EnricoPallazzoQuote Reply
I have no problem with his facing the two lefties. That’s his job, and he should be fine at it. But he should never face righties or switch-hitters unless it’s a blowout or he’s the only pitcher available.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Of course, Jake shouldn’t have hit with the bases loaded in the fifth, but that’s more typical managerial stupidity.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
OSS: I took the over and won. The Cubs failed to hit the ball in the air lazily enough and lost.

Glad I missed this one.

Seriously, these new safety rules suck.

Pretty good job by Rondon, honestly.

The Cubs were 25-6 last year. They’re going to be 6-6 this year.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
they could do both
SKQuote Reply
I’m starting to think the Cubs might not win this one.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
I was thinking that when it was 0-0 in the 6th. The Cubs bullpen isn’t very good without Edwards.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Uehara is good. Today was atypical for him. And if he had held on to the lead, we’d be seeing Davis now.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
I like Uehara, but aside from him and Wade Davis, I don’t think any of them are all that good. Strop can be, but he can be spectacularly bad too.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Both Strop and Rondon have been good in the past and have good projections. I don’t see the bullpen as a weakness, even without CJ.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
It was a bad series. Time to get their jollies in against the Brewers.
Or don’t. I can’t tell the Cubs what to do.
Rice CubeQuote Reply
Rice Cube,
If anyone is going to tell them what to do, they should tell them to start driving in some of those runners in scoring position. Also, hit more home runs. That would help too.
dmick89Quote Reply
At least the Cardinals suck.
