OSS: Cubs come back with a little help from the Red Sox defense.
Three up:
- A few other pieces of the Cubs lineup have been inconsistent of late, but Bryant and Rizzo are still rolling along. Bryant had two doubles in the game, and had another effective double when he took second after reaching on a throwing error by Sox pitcher Steven Wright. Rizzo had just one hit, but it was a bomb of a home run that looked like it was going to end up on the Mass Pike but only landed a few rows behind the Cubs bullpen. He also 'knocked in' an insurance run with a Little League Triple in the seventh inning, thanks to some #RodSex defense.
- Miguel Montero had the leading WPA play of the day with a solo shot to tie the game in the seventh. Many people, including Montero himself, thought he was on his way out last year but so far it looks like having more rest has rejuvenated his bat a bit.
- The bullpen shut the door in this game, with Rondon, Uehara, and Davis striking out four over three innings, allowing just two singles and no walks. Davis's outing in particular looked less tightrope-walky than usual this time around, by my eyeball norm.
Three down:
- Lackey's start was better than the last few outings by Cubs starters, but it would still be nice to see the Cubs take a lead early rather than keep coming back. That said, the Red Sox offense is good, and this game already felt like a vast improvmement when Lackey managed to get out of the first on less than 30 pitches.
- Jon Jay had the biggest negative play of the day for the Cubs offense when he grounded into a double play in the third.
- Addison Russell was the only starter to have a hitless day, but at least he made contact in all of his outs.
Next up: Kyle Hendricks takes on Eduardo Rodriguez on Sunday Night Baseball, so it's a night off for JD.
Comments
Just another day at the office for the Nats offense. 19 runs and counting vs Syndergaard and the Mets today.

Berselius is too lazy to login,
23 now. The Nationals are a low-scoring offense in football. It’s ridiculous.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Holy shit, 10 RBI for Rendon in that game.
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
I’m not looking forward to playing the Nationals when Joe walks Harper 28 times in a 3-game series.
dmick89Quote Reply
Berselius is too lazy to login,
Syndergaard is broken, may or may not be related to him refusing an MRI
Rice CubeQuote Reply
Rice Cube,
But now he’s definitely getting the MRI!

To night’s base ball squadron:

The good news for the Mets is that…
ceruleanQuote Reply
cerulean,
there are lots of things to do in New York. Maybe they can catch a Yankees game this summer.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
They seem to be pretty good this year. That should tide Mets fans over.
ceruleanQuote Reply
So the 2017 Nationals and Yankees are the 2016 Cubs and Red Sox as far as run differential thus far. I think the Cubs are due for an 18-run victory.
ceruleanQuote Reply
cerulean,
If the Cubs do not win by 18 today, you are banned from Obstructed View. Please fax to confirm.
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
Would printed and signed in triplicate then sent via train, horse, and pigeon suffice?
ceruleanQuote Reply
Pretty sure Jake Arrieta will give up no runs and no hits tonight, so 18–0 doesn’t seem like too much to ask.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Another high-scoring game is going on in Arizona. Pretty sure this is the first time they have scored so much in so many innings.
ceruleanQuote Reply
The Indy 500 is sponsoring Cubs baseball? I think the intersection of baseball and racing would be the Cardinals. Oh, that’s NASCAR. Nevermind.
Is assuming Cardinals fans are also racing fans racist?
ceruleanQuote Reply
Stupid slide by Bryant.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Man, Zobrist just missed that one.
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
I’m so tired of the Cubs popping out with runners in scoring position.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
😐
ceruleanQuote Reply
Ugh. 440-feet.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Jesus.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
The Cubs pitchers should probably stop giving up so many home runs.
dmick89Quote Reply
That was quite a turn.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Haven’t loved the strike zone in this series.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Zobrist got screwed.

Heyward got screwed.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
The Cubs hitters should probably stop striking out if they want to come back and win this.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Almora!
PerkinsQuote Reply
Baserunning!
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
It would help if the zone didn’t extend a few inches to the side of the plate.
PerkinsQuote Reply
I love Almora’s instincts.
ceruleanQuote Reply
I don’t love leaving runners in scoring position.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Perkins,
All those swings at pitches in the dirt don’t help, either.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Just a bit outside.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Kyle’s velocity seems back down.
PerkinsQuote Reply
At least Kyle seems to have figured out the huge zone too.
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
Stop striking out, assholes!
PerkinsQuote Reply
Bryant murdered that pitch.
PerkinsQuote Reply
That was lovely.
ceruleanQuote Reply
BRYANT
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
Bryant!
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I think Bryant would probably hit 85-90 home runs a season if he played at Fenway. Factoring in road games, probably 100-110 per season. Done deal. Sealed.
dmick89Quote Reply
Why is Duensing warming up? Hendricks is only at 73 pitches and doesn’t bat.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Hanley’s golf swing seems pretty good too.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Jay walks on 5 balls. C’mon Schwarber.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Kyle walks on 5 balls too.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Long ball?
ceruleanQuote Reply
Dang, just a little too soon on the swing.

Safe baby.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Not good baserunning, in my opinion.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
He’s safe, though.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
That was great base running by Jay.
dmick89Quote Reply
Yeah, I was too harsh in my initial reaction.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
I disagree. Took a perfect backhanded throw to not be all that close at home. Terrible call by the umpire.
dmick89Quote Reply
Yep. You can see that Jay saw the catcher had no clue where the ball was.
ceruleanQuote Reply
I wasn’t a huge fan of that aggressiveness with only one out and Bryant hitting, but I guess it would have taken a spectacular play to get him.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I may have overreacted to the initial out call, too.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Does bryant get an rbi for that?
EnricoPallazzoQuote Reply
EnricoPallazzo,
He shouldn’t.
EDIT: And he doesn’t.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Enderman in. He can earn a Goose Egg with this appearance.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Enderman strikes again.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Ugh.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Lots of respect for Heyward’s arm there
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
I wish Edwards would have started this inning. He should go two innings almost every time.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Ugh.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Strop yes
Berselius is too lazy to loginQuote Reply
This would be a good place to use the closer.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Goddamnit.
PerkinsQuote Reply
That was inevitable.
dmick89Quote Reply
That was predictable.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
There are certain situations where you can’t bounce your slider.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Seriously, why isn’t Joe using Davis here? Isn’t he supposed to be unconventional?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
I haven’t seen it with the bullpen yet.
dmick89Quote Reply
What the fuck was that?
PerkinsQuote Reply
Time to watch The Leftovers.
dmick89Quote Reply
I think we are already watching the leftovers.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Cubs are now 0-3 in games in which Bryant hits at least one home run.
