OSS: Holy shit, Javy Baez.

Three up:

  1. Baez had a nice day at the plate, going 2-4 with three runs batted in, but the highlight of the game was this ridiculous snag in the ninth inning. My only complaint is that he somehow makes it look *too* easy (dying laughing).
  2. Arrieta had another solid outing, striking out six in 6.1 innings and allowing just one run. He has given up two runs or less in six of his eight starts since the ASB, and went at least six innings in all but one of them. He's going to get paid this offseason, even if it's not quite going to be as astronomical as he might have been thinking at this time last year.
  3. Edwards has been shaky of late, but he came through in this game. He came in relief of Arrieta in the seventh with runners on the corners and one out and put the Jays away without allowing a run in what was the highest leverage situation for the Cubs pitchers in this game.

Three down:

  1. The bullpen dumpster fire continues to smolder away. This time it was Pedro Strop's time in the barrel, allowing four straight two-out hits in the eighth inning that brought the Jays within one.
  2. I was watching this one on gameday, and was pretty baffled at how Javy was thrown out at home in the second inning on an Almora single when Javy started at first base. The only thing I could think of was that it was a runner going on full count situation, but if someone could enlighten me in the comments that would be great.
  3. The Cubs may have beat up on JA Happ, but the Canadian edition won the Happ vs Happ battle. Ian Happ went 0-4 with four Ks in this one, three of them from his surnominal counterpart.

Next up: Nick Tepesch takes on Jose Quintana at 1:20 PM CT. Tepesch is coming off a six inning, one run, zero strikout start against the Rays, so any Cubs players who have been in the minors in the past year or two should feel like he's part of the team.

    I was watching this one on gameday, and was pretty baffled at how Javy was thrown out at home in the second inning on an Almora single when Javy started at first base. The only thing I could think of was that it was a runner going on full count situation, but if someone could enlighten me in the comments that would be great.

    Almora got caught in a rundown between first and second, so Javy took off, since there were two outs.     He should be a defensive upgrade over Caratini. Too bad he can’t hit at all.

    Biggest question mark with Rivera is whether he knows if the Cubs are back or not.

    Also, I know Heyward is struggling, but giving him a day off against a RHP is silly.

    Edit: I guess the Cubs are facing a ton of righties and Estrada doesn’t have much of a split, which explains the weird decision to rest Heyward and Avila today.

    I’m usually OK with bunts with two on and no out, but not when the lead runner represents the winning run. Ugh.
