OSS: Cubs win in a laugher to eliminate the Cardinals from the NL Central title.
Three Four up:
- The Cubs snuffed out the Cardinals faint division title chances on their own turf, which is nice to see. At the time I write this the Rockies are losing, so it doesn't hurt that race quite so much aside from the fact that it's one less opportunity to pick up ground.
- Addison Muscle had the big hit of the day that got everything started, a three run double in the first inning. He also did a fan a solid after falling into his nachos, buying a replacement set.
- Kris Bryant had a big day, going 3-4 with a walk and a home run.
- Jon Lester looked….okay….or at least he had okay results. There were still plenty of hard hit balls off of him though.
Three Zero Down:
:chef kissing fingers emojis:
Next up: Jake takes on Carlos Martinez at 7:15 PM CT. The Reds face the Brewers in MIller Park at 6:40 PM CT, where Zach Davies takes on something called Deck McGuire, who sounds like he should be starting at slot reciever for the Patriots instead of starting for the Reds.

So, if I had to project a 25-man roster, I think it’d be something like:
OF (4):
Jon Jay
Kyle Schwarber
Albert Almora, Jr.
Jason Heyward
IF (6):
Tommy La Stella
Kris Bryant
Javier Baez
Addison Russell
Anthony Rizzo
Ben Zobrist
UTIL (1):
Ian Happ
C (2):
Willson Contreras
Alex Avila
SP (4):
Kyle Hendricks
Jake Arrieta
Jon Lester
Jose Quintana
RP (8):
Wade Davis
Pedro Strop
Hector Rondon
Brian Duensing
Carl Edwards, Jr.
Justin Wilson
Mike Montgomery
John Lackey ?
MylesQuote Reply
It would be nice if they could clinch with a win, rather than a Brewers loss.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I’d be tempted to put Rivera on the roster for defense.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I’m amenable to that as well, but operate under the assumption that Maddon will try to take 17 pitchers and will only “settle” for 12. I’d kick Rondon or Lackey off the roster for Rivera if it were me.
MylesQuote Reply
Kind of crazy to think that the Cubs were 2 games under .500 at the All Star break and now 20 games over. That was one hell of a hangover.
PerkinsQuote Reply
I’d be surprised if Lackey doesn’t make the playoff roster.
dmick89Quote Reply
I think he’s on the bubble, but in. He’s a potential starter in case of injury, but so is Montgomery.
MylesQuote Reply
Joe had three catchers on the playoff rosters last year so maybe Lackey doesn’t make the playoff roster.
dmick89Quote Reply
Myles,
Can’t you replace a guy who gets injured during the playoffs?
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Only if you execute the injured player on the field immediately after the injury occurs.
RynoQuote Reply
I think so, but I mean more of an in-game longman. If Arrieta gets injured in the 2nd inning, someone needs to eat those innings.
MylesQuote Reply
Ryno,
That seems fair.
dmick89Quote Reply
Myles,
Good point. So I’m guessing Lackey replaces Rondon on your list and Joe goes with three catchers. He could also go with five infielders, which would leave La Stella off the roster.
dmick89Quote Reply
I’d like to see how Wilson does this week. If he’s still walking every batter he faces, I don’t really want him on the playoff roster. If you can’t rely on him in some higher leverage situations, I’d rather have Rondon.
dmick89Quote Reply
Certainly possible. For some reason, I seem to remember La Stella being a “lock” for the playoff roster, which is dumb if true and probably isn’t in any case.
MylesQuote Reply
I like Tommy La Stella, but I’d rather have Zobrist and Happ in that role.
MylesQuote Reply
I like Wilson for the playoff roster with the expectation that his hook his super quick. As far as talent goes, he’s one of the very few fireman options we have. Of course, he could throw a can of gasoline on it at any time.
MylesQuote Reply
Myles,
I like having La Stella for pinch hitting against a tough righty like Scherzer or Strasburg. You’ve got Almora for tougher lefties and defense, but it would be nice having La Stella. I’d rather have him than Rivera.
dmick89Quote Reply
which is pretty much what he’s done since he put on a Cubs uniform. He did look good against the Brewers.

Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
Their offense was decent in Milwaukee. That’s not really what I was talking about. Obviously it isn’t literally all or nothing. It just seems like the Cubs will frequently score 8 or 9 runs per game for four or five games and then struggle to score a single run over the next few. The offense has been a lot more consistent since the break.
dmick89Quote Reply
Note: the Cubs are no longer tied for the league lead in runs scored.

That was a frustrating game. Between the Cubs’ inability to cash in and the inexplicable use of Felix Pena for multiple innings, that was a preventable loss.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Honestly, I have no idea why Joe didn’t use Avila there. He’d have probably struck out, too, but I think he had a better chance than Javy.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Avila is probably a better hitter than Javy, and he’d have had the platoon advantage. Strange.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
The whole game was strange. I’m just going to forget it ever happened.
dmick89Quote Reply
I hope Rizzo remembers how to do anything other than pop out our ground out. Maybe he needs to get in contact with Matt Szczur and see if he can borrow some of his bats.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Joe’s obsession with Felix Pena continues. He’s been terrible all year (including the minors). There must be better ways to eat innings.
mcalis2Quote Reply
On the plus side, the Cubs passed the Nationals in runs scored.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
And they padded their lead in runs given up.
ceruleanQuote Reply
So the Cubs would play a one game tiebreaker with the Brewers if they somehow sucked enough the rest of the season to end up tying them, right?
dmick89Quote Reply
Fixed.
RynoQuote Reply
dmick89,
I can’t tell…MLB.com says the Cubs hold the tiebreaker over the Brewers by virtue of having won the season series, but that may just be for home field advantage in a tiebreaker game. If they end up in a three way tie with the Rockies, the Cubs and Brewers would have to play a one game playoff to see which wins the division and the loser of that would go to the WC game against the Rockies.
But even if the Cubs somehow lose the next two against STL, I remain optimistic they can take at least one game from the Reds.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Fixed more.
