At least it’s only the second, and not the 6th or 7th. Lots of baseball left. Why, we still can put in our bullp…..

    Fuck.

Not a fan of Jason Heyward getting PAs against a LHP in an elimination game where we’re trailing with the tying runs on.

I’m pretty sure the festering corpse of Matt Wieters hasn’t had two hits in a game all year. Sigh, Cubes.

Hokay. So if you pull the plug on Hendricks, who comes in? You think about Lackey at all, or go straight to the regular bullpen guys?

(I know, they’ll run Hendricks out for one batter next inning, but hypothetically speaking, right?)

Quintana is who I’d put in

Someone has to pitch on Saturday if the Cubs come back in this one.

I’ve been unable to comment til now. My stomach is a mess already. Might not survive another 4.5 innings.

    But no Montgomery?

Me too. But then, I can’t remember the last time I had a good feeling about the Cubs in the playoffs.

Maybe Game 6, 2003. (dying laughing)

    josh,

I’ve had a bottle of abt 12 taunting me on the shelf for the past two weeks, that I bought to celebrate my promotion. I’ve been too sick to drink it (dying laughing).

Also running on about three hours sleep due to a grant proposal deadline. Two sips and I’d probably be out cold (dying laughing).

    BVS,

Sweet deal. Hopefully nsf mathematical sciences does the same. Too bad I can’t apply for NSF here though due to the overheads.

Rizzo the Rat: I think this is on Dusty for not challenging that. Baez should have been out when his backswing hit Wieters.

Dusty didn’t want to waste his last challenge. That would be ridiculous.

I suspect Dusty didn’t challenge because it’s a pretty obscure rule, but he should have talked to the umpires, at least.

You would think Montgomery, after getting the most important out in Cubs history, would be able to come into these situations and not get rattled.

Not that I have any faith this pen can actually get this many more outs and hold the lead.

I’ll bet they’ll find some way to six of those outs.

    uncle dave,

I get it, and I like that managers are being more creative with their starters in the playoffs but there has to be a point of diminishing returns somewhere.

Odd inning two out magic don’t fail me now!

EDIT: Oh, it’s the eight inning now. I thought we were in a loop, destined to repeat a seventh inning that would never end. (dying laughing)

I hope the Cubs figure out a way to assemble a bullpen this offseason.

Probably a good idea to lay off the guys with the 10+% walk rates for a little while, I would say.

This game is like old school NBA Jam when the AI starts cheating. The gods have it out for us this time. Penance for last year. No way the Cubs hold on.

I get letting Davis get through this inning, but you gotta get someone up for the ninth. Assuming we get there. He just doesn’t have anything left in the tank.

Question right now is does anyone on that staff think they can pitch a baseball at this point?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this kind of relentless slow meltdown from a pitching staff before. Literally nobody can get it done. Nobody.

I thought they might overturn it because Pat and Ron are kind of the worst at calling those close ones and they were like “I don’t think they can overturn it.”

Wish they had showed that side by side replay earlier, it was 1000x more convincing.

Based on the play of both these teams in this series, the Dodgers should just be allowed to advance directly to the World Series.

This assumes that the Dodgers can’t ham it up with the best of them. They were the best in baseball at just that for a few weeks.

    dmick89,

I thought he was probably safe. But mostly thought there was no possible way they overturned it. I wish more broadcasts could sync up replays quickly like they did after the break.

It also doesn’t help that the few strikes the Cubs are throwing aren’t getting called as strikes.

That was the craziest Cubs’ winner-take-all clincher I have seen since the last time they had a winner-take-all clincher.

    cerulean,

He started the clincher against the Dodgers (LCS) and the Indians (WS) last season. He didn’t have a great game, but he did stick around and he settled down. He should have been taken out, but the Cubs won so whatever. (dying laughing)

TBS crew is hung up on Javy’s backswing that made contact with Wieters. According to the rules, it’s a dead ball. Should it be? Javy didn’t intentionally hit him with the backswing and Wieters was leaning forward trying to block the ball. I don’t know. I’m not sure I like that rule. Javy’s backswing didn’t impact the play. Wieters just missed it and then he threw it away.
