That must have been some oblique strain

That –> sucks

The biggest thing that I am looking for in this game is whether Coomer is still doing the fifth inning. The Score swapped Mark Grote with his counterpart on the Blackhawks podcast who apparently has more PBP experience.
That said I don’t know why they didn’t just have Grote do the 5th inning PBP, I thought he was solid when he pinch hit for Pat a few times last year.
berseliusQuote Reply
Oh great I’d forgotten how much I love hearing Ron coomer enthusiastically talking about his smelly feet.

SK,
I bet those clubhouse guys wish they had that back in the day.

I am extremely excited that MLB unfucked their website so that my work firewall no longer blocks it for thinking that it’s a mobile site.
berseliusQuote Reply
Yay baseball is back!
I’m hoping to make it to Saturday’s game. We live a few hours away from Miami now but with the price of tickets it’s very affordable to take the whole family even if it’s a late night for the kiddos. Cool to see that Darvish will be pitching.
WaLiQuote Reply
WaLi,
I just booked my hotel for the Cubs-Rockies series later this month, should be a fun time.
berseliusQuote Reply
If Schwarber goes yard his first AB then WS here we come! Otherwise, there’s always next year .*dying laughing*
baturkeyQuote Reply
this is a huge game today. Win and their playoff odds are probably 76%. Lose and they’re about 76%.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
It could go either way.
berseliusQuote Reply
Those odds make no sense, we are clearly at least 78 percent.
MylesQuote Reply
Chicago Cubs baseball is on the air!

First Rizzo HBP of the season.

Looks like no radar gun in the new WGN graphics.
berseliusQuote Reply
berselius,
They said they were getting it fixed and it should be up soon.
dmick89Quote Reply
Not sure what’s more impressive: Happ’s pace of roughly 640 HRs or Rizzo’s pace of roughly 640 HBPs.
TyroneQuote Reply
Tyrone,
640 HBP in 0 AB is pretty impressive
WaLiQuote Reply
Tyrone,
The cubs would score up to 640 more runs if they switched the two in the order.

Have they, though?
EdwinQuote Reply
Only one hit? It’s like they’re not even trying!
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Edwin,
No.
berseliusQuote Reply
Lester is really hitting his spots this inning. Everything on the edge or bottom of the zone.
EdwinQuote Reply
Looks like the radar gun is back. Also looks like Lester isn’t throwing that hard.

Until Castro, I guess.

berseliusQuote Reply
Are the Cubs relying too much on walks and HR?
EdwinQuote Reply
Edwin,
This HBP rate is unsustainable.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Lester seems to be around the 89-91 MPH range so far, but his location has been solid so far. Possibly a little low on the velocity, but for April it’s not bad.
EdwinQuote Reply
Naturally he walks the hitter.
EdwinQuote Reply
Heyward!
berseliusQuote Reply
berselius,
If he manages to walk and double in every game this year, I think he’ll be okay.
berseliusQuote Reply
Lester looks solid today.
Also, I was reminded yesterday that Angel Pagan was a pretty damn decent player for a long time and that he broke in with the Cubs. Does anyone remember if anyone thought he would be an everyday player when the Cubs traded him?
FonteYESQuote Reply
A rather unfortunate PA by Lester there. In situations like that I’d rather the pitcher not even take a bat up there. The temptation to swing is too much, it seems.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
Jon Lester is on pace to leave 18 runners on base today.
mylesQuote Reply
FonteYES,
Not really. From what I remember he seemed like a fourth OF type with injury concerns.
berseliusQuote Reply
Doesn’t sound like Lester has great command today, but it’s Opening Day no biggie.
mylesQuote Reply
Lester was getting crushed by Dietrich
berseliusQuote Reply
FonteYES,
I remember he hit 2 HR in a game once, but the rest of the time he seemed like just another guy who’d likely be replaced for next season.
EdwinQuote Reply
myles,
He’s been hit or miss so far. Really dialed in for 3-4 pitches, and then suddenly missing for 3-4 pitches.
EdwinQuote Reply
Lester walks the unwalkable.
dmick89Quote Reply
Lester doesn’t seem to be missing too many bats.
EdwinQuote Reply
Not a great day for Schwarber so far.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Cubs defense not so hot today

Thank goodness the Marlins are terrible and will probably let up 20 more runs this game.
EdwinQuote Reply
FonteYES,
He was referred to as Jesus Satan around here at the time.
TyroneQuote Reply
Lester already out, with a .500 OBP against today. Not great
mylesQuote Reply
Wow, Cishek’s pitches have silly movement.
berseliusQuote Reply
berselius,
Is it the arm slot?
EdwinQuote Reply
I guess we won’t have to wait long to see all the relievers.
dmick89Quote Reply
Obligatory reliever plate appearance.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Joe is in midseason form wrt letting relievers hit.
berseliusQuote Reply
berselius,
Evidently trying to ruin my mood on opening day.
GWQuote Reply
In Joe’s defense, we only have 4 pitchers in the bullpen.
Wait. What’s that you say? It’s an 8-man bullpen?
mylesQuote Reply
Nothing like two great teams battling it out on opening day. Possible future playoff matchup?
EdwinQuote Reply
myles,
What’s the over/under on number of years until an AI uncovers that Joe is actually trying to throw games?
GWQuote Reply
GW,
I assume he’s doing that stuff not so much to lose as to make winning more challenging, like ratcheting up the difficulty on a video game.

Almora comes in to play… left field? Why is the worst outfielder in center?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Perkins,
Slide it to the left and it’s perfect. it’s nice to see some cubs broadcasts updating their ancient graphics.
dmick89Quote Reply
berselius,
If that was Zambrano, cubs fans would lose their shit.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Yeah, I hope they do that. It looks clean and almost minimalist, but it seems an odd choice to place it directly above the focus area like that.
PerkinsQuote Reply
A nice and uneventful inning for Wilson.
berseliusQuote Reply
Perkins,
It would work in the center if networks were willing to get rid of the graphic just as the pitcher starts his motion. There’s no reason they can’t do that. They could just collapse it to the top left of the screen and show only the velocity if that’s important.
