OSS: Cyle and Kyle eke out a Cubs win.
Three up:
- Kyle Hendricks had a Cyle Hendricks performance, pitching seven innings with no runs and no walks allowed. He struck out five and allowed just four hits (IIRC, all with two outs). This is the third game in a row where a Cubs starting pitcher has faced at least one batter in the seventh inning, which is great to see.
- Kyle Schwarber provided all of the offense with a laser shot to right field in the sixth inning, which was all the Cubs needed. War Bear's batting line is now .286/.398/.629 with seven HRs, good for a 192 wRC+.
- Javy Baez and Albert Almora brought their gloves in this one. Both had spectacular catches – Almora on a shot to the wall in CF and Javy on a liner off the bat of Braun that he speared over his head.
Three down:
- Still no Kris Bryant in the lineup. He took BP today, and hopefully he'll feel well enough to play soon. I wish the Cubs had just put him on the mini-DL for concussions anyway.
- The Cardinals bullpen walked in the go-ahead run in extras, but they still beat the Mets.
- I had hiccups for about 6 hours today, so that sucked.
Next up: Brent Suter takes on Yu Darvish at 1:20 PM tomorrow. Hopefully Darvish keeps the seventh inning streak going.

Someone sent in a great idea to Effectively Wild this week – improve the strike zone by having two home plate umpires. One is in the same location as before and determines whether the ball crossed the plate, the other faces the batter and determines the height of the ball when it crosses the plate vs the rulebook strikezone. I’m not sure how this isn’t great for everyone – the umpires union gets an extra ump in every game, and the strikezone might end up being called more accurately.

I love Roquan. He was one of the elite players in this draft and BPA when the Bears picked. He’s like Reuben Foster minus a bit of physicality, but also minus injury concerns and off-field issues.
SF
McGlinchey is an interesting pick. He has some versatility and might start off at G or RT, but I think he’s Joe Staley’s replacement at LT in a year or two. Great fit in the ZBS. My only issue is that I thought Minkah and Derwin were the best players on the board at the time.
GB
There was a lot of debate about who CB2 in this draft was. Alexander was definitely in the discussion.

Questionable Picks
NYG
Didn’t draft their QB of the future AND likely turned down multi-pick trade offers to take a RB that isn’t the slam dunk a lot of people think he is.
BUF
Traded up to draft a QB that they hope will be as good as Colin Kaepernick. They’d have been better off taking Rosen or Lamar…or just signing Kaepernick.
OAK
They wanted McGlinchey, so they moved back and drafted the very poor man’s version of him in Kolton Miller.
BAL
Wanted a TE and didn’t care that it was too early to take one. They atoned by picking Lamar.
SEA
Penny is a nice RB, but they need picks. Should’ve traded back and picked Penny in the second where he belongs.
PIT
Edmunds is a nice player, but there were better safeties out there. Like Justin Reid, whose brother Eric is very good and available due to kneeling… Oh…

berselius,
Seems like pace of play would be a concern, with the extra time to resolve two calls into one.

Tyrone,
With regards to NYG, isn’t it considered idiotic to draft a RB that high due short careers/injury concerns?

Tyrone,
I love that the Packers got an extra first round pick for next year. Not sure what the saints were thinking.

Ryno, who had the best picks of the night?

Perkins,
That was my same thought and I’m not sure how much of an improvement it would be. As much as we complain, home plate umpires are still right at least 95% of the time. Seems like it would be a huge waste of time to perhaps better help resolve the 10-15 pitches that umpires get wrong per game.
I used to think an automated zone was the only way to go, but I’m not sure how much I care about that at this point. I don’t think the zone is broken. I’m fine with an automated zone, but I’m also fine with how it is. I stopped caring about whether or not the HPU gets balls/strikes correct. It’s a minor issue IMO.

WaLi,
It’s not ideal unless you have an elite prospect like Gurley, Elliott and Fournette. There are some people that like Barkley that much, but I’m not one of them. This is a deep draft for RBs and NYG kinda needs to address their QB issue.

Senior Rockies Correspondent Berselius,
I liked the move when it was for Lamar. When they got a raw EDGE with pad level issues, not so much.
GB is in good shape to draft their next QB next year.

Mucker,
I like that CLE picked the best QB at No. 1 despite the narratives on short QBs and spread QBs. I also like the value ARI and BAL got on their QBs.
Aside from the obvious value picks like Minkah in MIA and Derwin in LA, I like what NE did and I also like the fit of DJ Moore in CAR. GB getting their guy and a 1 next year was great.
Today is where the winners will be crowned, though.

NYG GM counters…
So, yeah, see? It happened a few times, so forget about the hundreds of times it didn’t happen.

Tyrone,
What’s the difference between Barkley and any of the other RBs? I don’t see that big of a difference and the Giants blew it in my opinion. Should’ve went QB or Chubb. Don’t get it.

Athleticism, mainly. He’s a good runner and has good vision, but he’s struggled after contact and he likes to bounce too much, imo. I prefer Guice, Michel and Penny…especially given their draft slots.
