OSS: Javy finally puts the Cubs on the board in extras.
Three up:
- Javy Baez had the big hit of the game, a bomb to dead center in extra innings against Cardinals closer Alex Reyes. The Cubs had no answers for the shambling remains of Adam Wainwright, but it was nice to see that they could still break through against a pretty solid back end of the Cards bullpen. They were the first runs of the game for either team, and it was just enough for the Cubs to leave Saint Louis with a series win.
- It’s nice to see the Cardinals’ ex-NL Westers have a tough game – Goldschmidt and Arenado had a combined -.600 WPA on the game. We won’t see that too often, so I’m gonna savor it.
- Craig Kimbrel was by far the biggest WPA gatherer on the day (.418). He came in to retire Goldy in the ninth, hit for himself in the 10th, and got the job done to close out the game. He took some pretty generous hacks in the 10th, but luckily did not have to run the bases.
One ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Contreras and Kimbrel got their signs crossed up in the tenth inning, which resulted in Willson taking a 99 mph fastball off of his wrist. He toughed it out and stayed in the game, but we’ll have to take a wait and see approach to how much of a long term thing this is.
Three down:
- At first glance, Zach Davies had another not-terrible start, going five scoreless innings. But he was pretty lucky – he gave up three doubles but managed to dance around them. He also walked three batters, which is both extremely unlike past Zach Davies and especially impressive since this ump apparently had an enormous strike zone.
- I caught a few clips of said egregiously hug strike zone – Ross had every reason to be upset.
- I’m only reading the game log here since I missed a lot of this game, but this sounds pretty wild:
Adam Wainwright reached on fielder's choice and error to pitcher. Edmundo Sosa advanced to 3B. Lane Thomas advanced to 2B on error. Error by Ryan Tepera.
At least on the replay I saw, it looked like Sosa was out twice over (dying laughing). At least the shitty umpiring wasn’t confined to home plate.
Next up: The Cubs have an off-day, then head to Pittsburgh for a three game set with the Pirates. Jake Arrieta takes on the mysterious TBD at 5:35 PM CT on Tuesday.

That play at third cracked me up when it came to the official scoring because the Cubs had lost their challenge, but my question given that was…who do you charge with an error when, in reality, nothing happened that constituted an error? Like, it’s customary for an official scorer to look at the replay to determine whether to call an error or not, so how do you charge an error on a throw that was caught with the fielder’s foot on the base?

Cubs catchers/pitchers really need to work on getting their signals straight.

Coomer has progressed by lightyears as a broadcaster over the years, and at this point I find him genuinely entertaining and insightful. My favorite thing is I can count on him for at least one rant about pitchers using stickum. Pat and Zach clearly want nothing to do with the conversation, so it turns into a three-minute monologue. It’s pretty funny.

andcounting,
Agree that Coomer is much more listenable than he was, but Pat has become less so (he seems to be on autopilot).
I found it funny when Pat did TV with J.D. and didn’t really know how to handle J.D.’s lightning fast witticisms and did this genuine, but oddly restrained “heh heh heh” laugh every time – like this sort of comedy banter was new to him.

SK,
I enjoyed Pat when he did TV, mostly because I always enjoy Pat. But it was pretty strange that aside from the different ad reads you would have no idea that he was doing TV instead of radio. I do think his fastball has lost a few ticks so to speak over the last few years but he’s still the gold standard.

I still wish the Pirates had Tony Watson in their bullpen, only for the missed opportunity at DNA puns when he appeared back to back with Crick.
