Iβm guessing Counsell really doesnβt like the matchup against Mikolas. Itβs been a strange year for Happ, but he seemed to be coming alive as of late.
BN suggests Happ has a good average but low SLG and strikes out a lot despite the average against Mikolas so I think that may be it. Also doesn’t hurt to have a couple days off his feet in case his hammy is still being lame
On that it was 1st and 3rd with only the one out so I think you can kind of concede it so they don’t use trickery to steal a run, but the holding runners thing needs to be addressed at some point
If you aren’t confident in Amaya’s arm throwing out a guy at 2B, it probably isn’t a fast enough throw to allow a cut off and attempt to cut down the guy coming home either. The Cubs are in a bit of a pickle in that sense.
Wainwright with a game full of homer broadcasting (not really obnoxiously so) just gives up the facade with βmost of our runs today have come with two outs,β so thatβs fun.
In his defense, itβs probably tough to break the habit of feeling part of the team he spent his entire career with, and from which he retired just last year. I switched jobs a few months back and sometimes still refer to stuff at my old firm as βwe.β
Honestly, I donβt blame him at all. First year broadcasting, heβs not going to be polished, and he called attention to the obvious conflict of interest right away. Itβs a strange broadcasting decision, but thatβs not his fault. And he was very informative about how he would approach the Cubs hitters which we really never hear, so I didnβt mind that. Those little flashes of bias in the critical moments of the game sucked to suffer through but he did a decent job.
I will say I was somewhat encouraged by the comeback attempt, but Cubs should do more to cash in runners earlier…thankfully there are many games remaining
Iβm trying not to evaluate individual games using macro/trend-based criticisms of the team. Or at least not overdo it. They scored six runs, and that should be enough. It seems like the wrong night to say they didnβt hit well. Overall itβs frustrating that Cubs homers arenβt really a thing at the major league level anymore and itβs no fun feeling like Cubs runners on first and opponent runners on first are all going to vacate the base immediately but for diametrically opposite reasons.
Iβve said it before and Iβll say it again, I just hate when they play the Cardinals. Iβm always so glad for these series to be over.
The offensive struggles are deeply frustrating, but Iβm finding it hard to really find fault with what the Cub hitters are doing. Itβs not like theyβre swinging at a lot of crap or trying to pull everything or overswinging. The results arenβt there but the process seems no different than what they were doing when they were scoring at will.
Between a Madrigal error (which is basically his primary job since he can’t seem to hit), letting leadoff guys get on, throwing meatballs, it’s a major execution fail
It doesnβt matter who is pitching, they turn to Cy Young when Morel is up. The gameday screen just looks like sharpshooter target practice on the corners.
Not too bad

Rice Cube,
Nah, man, letting teams have 2nd and 3rd with one out and losing the double play every damn time is terrible, losing baseball.
Youβve got a guy on 3rd who is very likely to score, so you let the trailing runner move into scoring position as well? No, no, uh uh.
Bottom of the ninth in a tie game when the trailing runner means nothing, sure. But not in the middle of the game.

I donβt know if itβs that or the pitchers or what, but there is a first-to-second pipeline that is rendering double plays extinct.
