Why is it wrong to trash Hendry for not keeping Hamilton?
Because the agreement had already been made for the Cubs to take cash and pick Hamilton for Cincy. Keeping him would have not only been highly dishonest, but likely detrimental to Hamilton (his entire support structure was set up in Cincy), and probably in violation of some transaction rule. Hendry never really had the option to keep him, so bashing him for being honest is fucking stupid.
Mercurial OutfielderQuote Reply
Joe, the Cubs never had Hamilton. Not for even a split second. He was never ever on the Cubs in any way, shape or form.
The Cubs sold their draft pick to the Reds and the Reds told the Cubs who to pick for the Reds.
I was sitting around online going crazy like a schoolgirl when I heard the Cubs drafted Josh Hamilton and all his ridiculous potential and I was very upset to find out they had traded that pick before they made it. It happens. Teams do it every year, but the Cubs never had Josh Hamilton.
mb21Quote Reply
Once the Cubs sold the pick, Hendry could not keep him. He was Reds property the moment he was drafted.
And let’s be honest about the Cubs, the media and their fans for a moment too. A guy like Josh Hamilton wouldn’t have passed the smell test and would have been immediately bashed. We would have seen articles and comments about Dumbass Jim Hendry just signed a drug addict who had hadn’t played baseball in a couple years. Hamilton never would have been given a chance. Not by the Cubs, not by the media and not by the fans. He was a player with a checkered past and those guys don’t work in the Cubs system.
As much as I was happy to hear his name come off the board by the Cubs, I’m thrilled they had traded that pick to the Reds. I have little doubt that Josh Hamilton would be out of baseball and doing drugs right now if the Cubs had taken him.

Not to mention that, given the postgame atmosphere around the stadium, coming to play at Wrigley would have set the stage for constant temptation for Hamilton.
Cincy was a great place for someone like Hamilton to play and then later Texas. No way he survives in a city like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles.
Yeah, the way things have worked out for him is probably the best-case scenario.
I just refuse to fault Hendry for keeping his word, and I think it’s telling that many fans would rather Hendry have made himself into a liar.

If the Cubs never had the chance to keep Hamilton, that’s one thing. I wouldn’t fault Hendry for being honest.
I think it’s a stretch, though, to say that Cubs fans would have bashed Hendry for picking a drug addict. Cubs fans are always looking for a savior, so I think they would have been ok with the pick.
But the bottom line for me is, if the Cubs didn’t have the chance to keep him, ok. But given that the team hasn’t produced its own stud position player in forever (Castro notwithstanding), it seemed like another example of the team not being able to recognize talent.
