The Cubs are reportedly close to signing Doug Davis to a minor league deal. Davis has been considerably better throughout his career than most people realize. Baseball Reference uses Rally’s WAR calculation and has him at nearly 22 rWAR. Fangraphs has him at 23.5 fWAR. Last season he threw only 38.1 innings in the big leagues for the Brewers. He threw a small number of innings in the minor leagues as well, but had to miss most of the year because of a condition with his heart. He also had surgery on his elbow.
This is only a minor league deal and the truth is that if Doug Davis can return to the form he showed from 2003 to 2009, he’s a pretty good pick up for this team. His career FIP is basically league average (4.43). The ERA is also about league average and the same with xFIP. This is his age 35 season and he’s coming back from surgery and complications with his heart so even expecting him to be average is a stretch.
Marcel and ZiPS each projected a 4.42 FIP from Davis this season. If Wells and Cashner return on time, Davis is nothing more than depth. If one has a setback, Davis could see action with the Cubs. I know I’ve underrated Davis over the years and still have trouble figuring out how the ridiculously boring and time consuming Davis has given the Cubs so much trouble over the years. Only the A’s and Nationals have hit Davis worse than the Cubs have over his career. The A’s and Nationals faced Davis 9 different times while the Cubs have faced him 18 different times in the regular season.
Davis doesn’t turn this team into contenders, but for a team that thinks they are, this is about as solid a pick-up the team could have made for presumably little money.

I was annoyed that they traded Gorzelanny too. But, after the Garza trade it was kind of inevitable. Don’t forget that when the trade was made there was supposedly tons of pitching depth with Wells, Silva, Coleman, Jay Jackson, and Cashner all fighting for the 4th and 5th spots.
Silva being even worse than expected and Jackson getting hurt make it seem worse.
Burgess already has 4 HR in A+. If he turns into a legit prospect, the trade will have been a good one.

I’m not saying Gorz should have started before Wells or Cashner but he certainly would have been better to keep around than some of the garbage (JefF7 for example) that’s currently in the bullpen. Gorz had shown in the past he could transition fairly easily from bullpen to starter and back and he’s a decent lefty which they also lack.

This makes total sense to me. It’s easier to go be in the Yankees minor league system than to be demoted from the Cubs.
I would much prefer to leave my company and take a lesser position elsewhere than to suffer the ignominy of being demoted.

Clearly Gorz is a decent MLB pitcher. My only point was that they didn’t give him away, and they didn’t really need him either.

I think some guys just have to have the reality of a situation smack them in the face. Remember when Shawon Dunston didn’t want to move to the outfield when he was with the Cubs? he insisted he was still a shortstop. Well, the Cubs couldn’t keep paying him veteran salary to keep getting hurt while trying to play shortstop, so they let him go (or traded him or however it went). Then, all of a sudden, there was Shawon as the 4th outfielder for the Giants because nobody would let him be their shortstop.
I think Silva probably thought he could get a starting gig somewhere as soon as the Cubs released him, so he said fuck you to going to Iowa. When it turned out the minors were the best anyone was offering, he took the gig with the Yankees.

I knew I didn’t phrase that right at all.
I don’t think the Cubs handled the Silva thing very well and neither did Silva. But considering the divergent paths of each organization and the fact that the Yankees don’t appear very happy with Phil Hughes for the time being, seeing Silva on the big league Yankee roster doesn’t seem completely farfetched to me.
