Normally, I am not someone who wants to rush players to the big leagues. I wasn’t a fan of bringing Corey Patterson up so quickly. I didn’t even love it when Kerry Wood and Mark Prior were brought up so fast. I usually want players to develop skills in the minors that will be harder to learn while under the pressure of the big leagues.
But that was when I was young and had delusions that the Cubs minor league instructors might be good for something. I thought that there was actual development going on. It turns out that was pretty much a fallacy.
The big league team had need for a lead-off man, and apparently believed that was Corey’s role in the big leagues, but never seemed to teach Corey those skills while down in the minors. He came up acting like a middle-of-the-order player but without the power or discipline to ever thrive in that role, and he was completely unable to master the art of getting on base.
So while I would fear a similar fate befalling Brett Jackson after only a total of 212 games in the minors since 2009, he seems like he is probably as good as he is going to get against minor league talent. I don’t trust the minor league instructors to actually teach him to cut down on his strikeouts, make him a better baserunner, or improve his defense. I think he pretty much is who he is and right now that is a guy who is probably the best outfielder the Cubs have in their entire system including the major league roster. He’s certainly one of the three best. I don’t even think that can be argued.
The Cubs are now having trouble selling out games against the Cardinals when the weather is 80+ degrees, sunny and they are selling $3 beers. Clearly interest in the current roster is low. Really low. Phenomenally low.

So what would breathe life into this walking dead corpse of a team? How about some youth and vitality? How about some baseball talent? How about a guy who may be a bit crazy, but in a likable way?
BRETT JACKSON!
He’s got a line of .288/.416/.514/.930 so far at AA. He is 12 for 14 in stolen base attempts. His career slash line is .301/.404/.494/.898. That ain’t bad.
Like I said, he might need more seasoning, but the Cubs instructional capabilities are like seasoning with tap water, so this is probably as good as he’s going to get at that level.
People have said they need to trade an outfielder to make room for him, but since they are barely playing Colvin anyway, just send him down to get some real playing time. Maybe he’ll accidentally learn some things down there. Then stick Brett in centerfield and rotate in Byrd against the tough lefties.
That won’t sell out the stadium, but it sure would make things interesting. Watching veterans lose is boring. There are no moral victories. This is as good as they are going to get and they suck, so who cares? You inject some youth in there with actual talent and room to improve and suddenly there is something to matter besides the final score.
Or the Ricketts can keep giving away t-shirts. Either way. We’ll see what happens.

The problem with saying that BJax should be brought up since the farm system can’t teach him anything is that it requires the Cubs management to have enough competence to realize that they are incompetent. It’s like them saying “Our decisions are wrong and we are stubborn; therefore we must work to outsmart ourselves.”
It’s kind of like last month’s lineups — I liked them, but I couldn’t get excited because I knew that they were only smart by accident. (Based on their Aprils, I wanted Castro and Barney hitting 1-2 because of their OBP and Byrd hitting 3 because he sucks; Q thought Castro was fast, Barney was a slap hitter, and Byrd was an RBI guy).
We may root for the Cubs to limit the damage of their stupidity, but you have to remember that they would only ever do that for even stupider reasons.

You’re definitely right about Jackson being one of the three best outfielder in the organization. As you said, that’s not even arguable. He’s easily better than Soriano and Fukudome. He’s more than likely better and more valuable than Byrd too.

We won’t know what that status is until the end of the previous year. The Cubs could call him up and keep him for that 7th year since they waited until a few weeks or more after the season started.
So even if he ended up being eligible for arbitration as a super two, he’s still making league minimum (prorated) in 2011, league minimum in 2012 and 2013 at the very least. So much can go wrong between now and 2014 that I really think any team basing a decision on when to call a player up based on super two status is just doing it wrong.

He doesn’t make much money and I’d actually expect something decent in return. Not great by any means, but maybe a back of the rotation starter or a high upside reliever not far from the big leagues.
I’d probably not trade him though. Fukudome will be a free agent after this season so unless the Cubs are comfortable turning that spot over to Colvin with Jackson in CF, it means the Cubs will have to spend more money on an outfielder than they’re paying Byrd.
Since it’s the Cubs, they’re going to go into the offseason with the intention of contending. Byrd is a league average ballplayer and he makes less than what he’s worth. Assuming the Cubs make a run at Pujols, they’re going to need cheap production. Guys like Castro, Barney, Jackson, Cashner and even Byrd become that much more important.
You also have to consider the Cubs will need a 1st baseman and a 3rd baseman. I’d keep Byrd unless the offer was too good.

Sure, it would depend on where they want to go with the team next year. If they’re gonna open the wallet and get Pujols, then going after someone with a bit more cost certainty (Byrd) makes sense instead of cobbling together, say, a Colvin-Baker platoon out there and rolling the dice on the market for a 3B.
It’ll be interesting to see how Castro and Barney continue to develop this year, though. If they keep hitting, then the team looks at least reasonable at five of the eight positions, needing only a 1B, 3B, and OF. If moving Byrd facilitated filling one of those slots with a true premium free agent in the offseason, I could hold my nose and go with a combination of untested youngsters and whatever is on the retread pile to fill the last three lineup slots. It’s a model that’s worked fairly well for St. Louis, though in fairness most models will be effective if you have the best player in baseball on your team.

It’s impossible to say if they truly believe the words that are coming out of their mouths, but they are running a short-term strategy of trying to maximize revenue while they have the giant contracts on the books because they know they are paying them either way. The problem is they look like morons for calling this team a contender and I am thrilled beyond words that such a large portion of Cub fandom is bored to death of such mediocrity. They may still sell out their season tickets because of the depth on their waitlist, but a very large portion aren’t bothering to show up to the ballpark which means that is going to be another big chunk coming off their safety net next off-season.
I doubt we’ll ever know how big a hit that waitlist took because I’m betting a bunch of people passed on tickets and then got right back on the waitlist figuring their number would come back around soon. But the empty seats last night were shocking.
Hell, The Heckler has a package where there is a pre-party at a bar, it’s $1 hotdog night, and they are playing the Cardinals and that thing was getting tweeted and updated on Facebook by numerous people repeatedly for at least the last 2 weeks. Last I saw last night they still hadn’t sold out.
It’s remarkable.

It’s remarkable.[/quote]I mentioned on ACB several times in the comments to MO that I do not believe that either Hendry or Ricketts believes this team is a contender. They’re selling hopes and dreams and trying to make money, which in reality is exactly what they should be doing when the team won’t contend. It would have been nice to see them rebuild and start doing that no later than the all-star break last year, but once they decided not to do that they had to pretend the team was a contender.
I may not think much of Ricketts, but Hendry has been around this game for a long time. He’s made some good deals, some bad deals, but I refuse to believe the man is an idiot. Listen to any baseball insider talk and they have all the respect in the world for Hendry. If we can sit here on our laptops and recognize this team isn’t a contender, Jim Hendry knows it.
With attendance down and probably down even more as the season goes on, the odds of a rebuild increases and that’s good. The problem at this point is that you don’t really have any players to trade that are going to bring much in return. If healthy, Soto would. Marmol probably would. Same with Marshall. Matt Garza is their biggest trade piece. When you think about it, that would be a pretty smart move for the Cubs. If they could get something close to what they gave up that would be a pretty good deal for the team.

i was sitting on the comode today and i was running my hand back their to make sure everything is still ok and motherfucker there is a 2econd hole up their . like in the tall part of my butrack not the part that shit comes out. i played with it for a while becuase its kind of cool and whatever and some fucking juice came out . and i was like what the fuck . it was like pink or some shit and smeled like feet .
i tryed to get a doctor apointment but 1) id ont have insurence with my new job and 2) the clnic was closed today becuase of some stupid shit like vaceines or shit for kids . so can i just stick a neele back their and pop it or am i going to have to get use to it and is my pants gonna get that juice shit on it .
