Pirates fail to sign first round pick, Mark Appel

The Pirates failed to reach an agreement with their first round pick today. Mark Appel was considered a possibility to be taken first overall, but instead dropped to 8th when the Pirates drafted him. Here is what Neal Huntington said about the Pirates decision.

“Our final offer exceeded the available bonus pool money and was essentially up to the last dollar we could offer prior to falling into the second tier penalty which would have resulted in the loss of a first round draft selection," Huntington said. "While, as we have shown in past years, we are willing to be aggressive with our financial offer, we simply did not feel it was in the best interest of the organization to forfeit our first round selection in the 2013 amateur draft."

It is going to be very interesting to see what happens to Appel in the next draft. It's quite the risk on his part to turn down a deal even if it's for much less than he was hoping for. Pitching leads to many injuries. Appel could turn out to be the number 1 pick next year and double what he could have gotten for the Pirates. It's probably more likely that he'll slip a bit and be picked about where he was this year. That's if he stays healthy.

i was curious as to whether they would opt to forfeit a pick next year, since their pick next year doesn’t look like it will be as high as it normally is, and some see appel as a #1 overall type.

has to be. The entire point was to rob $ from draft picks and int’l and funnel it to the veterans. If they don’t get better contracts there will be hell to pay

I think we expected teams to sign more of their own players with the new CBA. We definitely expected more younger players in MLB to be locked up and not hit free agency like they did before, but this makes sense too. This is going to make the cost of the win skyrocket.

    Yeah he did.

Also I use the mobile site and like it due to keeping the comments centered. I don’t like always having to log in so I just don’t. Don’t think that’s a site issue though . Droid X2

Quite the game from Soriano. Always good to see.

Mobile site looks good on my Droid. I’ve not used it to comment though.

Nice to see Sori getting some well-deserved appreciation from the home audience (small though it is).

Josh, The blank Gameday page is because you have an Ad-Blocker running. Turn the blocker off and reload the page and Gameday will load fine. That’s the quick fix until I can determine how to get around it.

I wonder if one of the unintended consequences of the CBA will be fewer prospects going to 4-year colleges in the future. A prospect who goes to junior college has leverage (can return to school) after the 1st year, 2nd year (could then transfer) and after the 3rd year. A college player has leverage after the 3rd year (sometimes the 2nd if you’re a sophomore eligible pick).
