Carl Crawford and a prospect to the Marlins for Hanley Ramirez and Heath Bell is something that Bob NIghtengale is suggesting is in the works that doesn't make the least bit of sense. Carl Crawford, a truckload of money and all the Red Sox prospects for Hanley Ramirez makes sense, but other than that this is just ridiculous.
I've read several times over the past few days that the Cubs really really want to trade Ryan Dempster so that they can focus on trading Matt Garza. This sounds as absurd as the Crawford/Hanley trade proposal. Can the Cubs not chew gum and spit at the same time? They have to trade one to work on trading another. It's like a check list? One down. Now we can move on and talk about another player. Can't talk trade about more than one player at a time. What the fuck? Obviously this is bullshit, but why do people keep saying this?
The Kansas City Royals inquired about Matt Garza. Obviously the Royals were told that the Cubs had to first trade Ryan Dempster before they could talk Garza trade. No, seriously, why the hell would the Royals want Matt Garza?
This ad in the local paper doesn't seem right.

I think this has to do with market saturation (not sure if correct term but it makes sense to me) in that if both Dempster and Garza are still on the market, then teams still have a choice, but once Demp is off the market, then teams have less choices because the supply just went down by one. It’s probably still bullshit but that’s what I’ve read.

I think that the journalists are just going with a narrative but it does seem like the Cubs are trying to fast-track a Dempster trade. However, they can fast-track the Demp trade while also fielding calls for Garza, so I definitely agree with you that the Cubs are able to multi-task. Once one is traded, though, I’m guessing the urgency to acquire the other will change in the Cubs’ favor.

The only thing I can think of is if a Dempster trade is either imminent or complicated, and the brass needs to concentrate on that right now to either get it done quickly or to work out the complexities. This seems unlikely, but it’s a possibility.

I suppose anything is possible, but I’d like to think this front office can work on more than one trade at a time. If you’ve got players you’re sellling you need to be taking offers whenever they come in. If you get a good one or can negotiate a deal for one, you do it. I cannot imagine a situation in which this front office isn’t doing that. It’s possible the Cubs think Dempster will be more valuable if they get rid of him first, but even if that’s true they’re still working on offers for Garza too. And others.

I was thinking more along the lines of thinking they can get a lot for Dempster and Barney, but if the offer doesn’t meet their expectations they can still package Garza with Barney. You may be right, but I still think if the Cubs got an acceptable offer for Barney and Garza that they’d take it. They’d have to, wouldn’t they? What happens if that team interested in that deal goes elsewhere and the deal they’re hoping to make along with Dempster falls through? Then you’re screwed.
I also don’t think they’ll be trading Barney for what it’s worth. He’s nothing great, but he’s a solid player considering his defense and makes league minimum. I’d be very hesitant to trade him because I just don’t know what his value is in a trade. It’s hard to figure out because the defensive metrics disagree a lot.

I was just using Barney as an example for the package deal. But let’s say Team A wants Grienke from the Brewers but the Brewers are dragging their feet. Plan B is Dempster and a secondary piece. Team B wants Garza and the same secondary piece, but the Cubs think they can get more for Dempster and that secondary piece…Do they take the first sure offer or try to get the most value for what they have? I say they wait and see if they can move Dempster before agreeing to deal Garza. Just my opinion.

that’s a big risk though. You risk the sure deal for one that may never happen. Keep in mind most deals teams talk about never reach an agreement. I think one GM said something like 90% of trade talks fall through. I don’t think you can take that risk. But it’s possible. Then again, we do have Hoyer’s word saying he’s talking trades about several players so I’m thinking it’s just a narrative for the sportswriters to roll with. I could be wrong though.

Although Ramirez wasn’t exactly hitting for power in the minor leagues, he was still hitting twice as many home runs at Castro a the same age. Hanley Ramirez is also a couple inches taller and about 40 pounds heavier according to Baseball Reference. I’m guessing Ramirez put on a lot of weight and started hitting more home runs. Same could happen to Castro, but I don’t think he’ll be hitting them out like Ramirez once was. Ramirez is an odd player. He was a fantastic player until he was 26 and he’s fallen off a cliff since. He’s been worth .6 rWAR since the start of last season.
