I tried something last year over at Aisle 424 that I called the Play of the Day that substituted a game recap. My reasoning was that everyone with a Cubs blog that wanted to be “taken seriously” did a game recap, and the last thing I want to do with the Cubs is take them seriously. So I highlighted a singular play that I thought was most important, most hilarious, or otherwise captured the essence of the game.
It worked fine, but I found I was writing almost full game recaps as I tried to set up the scenario of the Play of the Day, which kind of defeated the purpose. Meanwhile, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ve decided to go with the Pic of the Day to capture the essence of the days game.
I can’t promise it will always be timely, but I’m going to try to keep up with it for awhile to see how everybody likes it. So without further adieu, the debut OV Pic of the Day, starring DeWayne Wise as he scores in the 9th on a wild throw.

I wish I pulled for a team that understood this. 1 BB and 10 K’s. Alackaday.
Could this be a possible solution?

Yes. When Cam “The Great Unknown” Newton is the consensus #1, then the class is pretty crappy. Hell, Blaine Gabbbert was the second one off the board. I feel like SF got the best value with Kaepernick.
Was it really that bad though?
Was what really that bad? The QB class? It wasn’t THAT bad.
Cam Newton was a lot like Vince Young, who went third overall.
I think Locker was a slight reach, but TEN had painted themselves into a corner. He was basically Cutler with a few more questions.
Gabbert’s a mystery to me. If you were to draw up the perfect QB, you’d draw Blaine Gabbert. He just didn’t produce. Couple that with the fact that he creates pressure in the pocket, and you have a QB that’ll take time.
Ponder and Dalton are strictly WCO guys, which is typically a second or third round value.
Kaepernick was the most interesting to me. He’s a lot like Randall Cunningham (size, arm strength, speed, running ability) minus some of the agility. Both were second rounders only because of the lack of competition, imo.
Mallett was a laugher to me. All the talent in the world and every team let him drop to NE. He’s in the absolute perfect situation.
All of these QBs have potential. Some were overdrafted because they can start Week 1 for QB-hungry teams. A lot of quality players, but they seemed to have more questions as a group than QB classes of the past.

There’s not a WHOLE lot out there. They need to keep their guys (Franklin) and fill a couple of holes, but I doubt they can afford any guy that will REALLY make a difference.
I think they should go after a WCO WR (Sidney Rice) and another DB (Ike Taylor). Maybe Shaun Ellis if they can’t keep Franklin.

CAR was fucked. They had the best prospect in the last decade in their sights and he went back to school. Their pick had a TON of value and then it dropped to nearly nothing. If they could have traded out of that pick, they would have. I bet they wanted Dareus, but they felt the pressure of not being able to pass on Newton’s potential.

Newton was a slightly better throwing QB and VY was a slightly better runner. But I don’t see how you can say Newton is a higher character guy.
Newton stole computers and had the whole pay for play thing.
VY’s work ethic has been questioned since Dickhead Fisher had to play him, but those questions weren’t there in college. There were ZERO character questions with VY at the time of the draft.
Both were drafted in the top 3 based on their height, weight, arm, speed, running ability and escapability.

Well they took a QB with their first pick each of the last two years. I really can’t see Luck staying for a fifth year (though I couldn’t see him staying for a fourth either), so CAR would be wise to hold the No. 1 pick ransom if they have it again next year.
But yeah, Dareus should have been their pick. But the fact is that they went from having the best No. 1 pick in the last decade or so to having the worst No. 1 pick since 2005.

To be clear, I’m not saying Newton was the worst No. 1 pick since 2005 (JaMarcus Russell easily takes that honor). I’m saying the value of the 2011 No. 1 pick was the lowest since 2005.

Even with last night’s meltdown, Marmol is a valuable pitcher. Relief pitching is always volatile. Marmol should have been traded not because his skills were declining, but because he was getting expensive, and what’s the point of paying millions for the closer of a 70-75 win team.

Marmol’s pitching is always a tightrope. He’s blown saves, but he’s also blown away teams with his slider. Because of his volatility (above the usual volatility of relief pitching) he’s not a great pitcher but merely a very good one, as MB said. But he’s certainly one of the top 30 relief pitchers in MLB right now.

I argued before and I’ll just say it again, there was really very little reason to sign Marmol to the 3-year contract they did. They didn’t overpay. That’s not my issue. They may have even gotten a good deal. However, someone with his control issues is just not someone I’m signing to a long-term contract. He had gotten a little lucky (low babip, low hr/fb rate). I can’t say it’s a bad deal or even stupid, but I didn’t like it. There was also no reason for THIS team to sign a closer for 3 years. There’s also no reason for them to not trade Sean Marshall.

Few relievers are what we’d consider elite closers. Very few of them can sustain that level of performance for longer than a few years. The Cubs didn’t bet on Marmol to do that as they didn’t pay him all that much money, but any team that would bet on Marmol remaining an elite closer would be doing something wrong.

We know after it happened, but I don’t think we know before. How many times have we seen Marmol come in and walk a couple batters before striking the next 3 out?
Besides, you’re not taking your closer out until he’s either saved the game or blown it. I’ve never seen a manager do that with a closer who solidly held that position for the team.

Does this philosophy also preclude the manager from having somebody warm up in the bullpen in the midst of a closer-bedshitting? Kerry Wood warmed up in the 8th, then sat down, and I’m not entirely sure when he got up again to warm up in the 9th. I think that attitude by the manager is commendable to have so much confidence in your closer, but…damn.
I was a bit amused by last night’s bedshitting but I probably wouldn’t have been as amused if this were 2008.
i haven’t seen it either but i wouldn’t mind us starting the trend.
I probably would unless someone can show me conclusively that pitchers who show poor control to start an inning continue to have poor control. If there’s no evidence that what happened to the last 2 or 3 hitters has any impact on the next few hitters then taking your closer out in a close game and bringing in an inferior pitcher only gives the other team a greater chance of winning. I haven’t seen any research to indicate that what happened to the last couple batters means he’s going to pitch poorly to the next few hitters.

Some are asking why Soriano is not on second base, but my point of view is there’s no reason to bust your ass on a play that should be an out if it weren’t being handled by an “All-Star” (dying laughing)

I didn’t realize the game was even going. But Soriano is the king of popping up the ball and the defenders miss it and someone scores. He’s done that like a million times this year.

they also square their shoulders, wind and deliver. They don’t just take the ball and chuck it from the mound to the plate. Essentially that is what a throw to first is.

I watched “12 Angry Men” again the other night and I still think it’s a great film. It’s not a good lesson on what reasonable doubt is since there’s even less reasonable doubt there than in the Anthony case. The film is more of a character study, among other things. The script was excellent and intense. The atmosphere played a big part with the suffocating heat. I would recommend it.

very interesting GW. I suppose you are not at liberty to say what the case is about.
I’m surprised I haven’t ever been called to jury duty given my clean record, and age, but then it’s a fairly large county/city I live in.
The big lesson prosecutors should learn from that case is that they should school the jurors on what exactly reasonable doubt means- in their closing arguments- just to keep it fresh in their minds. Maybe that’s illegal? I don’t know. Jury instructions are not simple enough. There are 26 pages of legal mumbo jumbo. Jurors are not that bright in many cases. We all know that.
Not to turn the tables in any way, but I wonder why the major media doesn’t give much attention to all the innocent who eventually are exonerated, many of whom have been on death row for years or decades. Nancy Grace sure doesn’t believe in those people. I have a problem with Nancy Grace. She does a good service and means well, but she’s pretty fucking biased to put it mildly. She’s almost as bad as the defense, imo.
