OV Pic of the Day: Wind Blowing Out, Cubs Just Blowing

In News And Rumors by aisle424Leave a Comment

Everybody expected some high scores in the game tonight as the wind was blowing out.

Final score: Washington 3, Cubs 1.  Shut us right up.

PoD_8-9-11

(Chris Sweda/ Tribune / August 9, 2011)

In fairness to all the pre-game predictors, all of the runs were scored on home runs and Michael Morse’s still hasn’t landed yet.  So there’s that.

Definitely in the top 10. God, I used to love that show. I forget how good it was because almost 2/3 of the run now has been decent/average.

    Bart the Lover
    Kamp Krusty
    Homer the Heretic

Umpire: Okay, let’s go over the ground rules.
You can’t leave first until you chug a beer.
Any man scoring has to chug a beer.
You have to chug a beer at the top of all odd-numbered innings.
Oh, and the fourth inning is the beer inning.

That’s very kind. I love the peak as much as everyone but most things in the last 8 years has been garbage. I still can’t find TV I enjoy more than seasons 2-8 (3-6 for the more pretentious types).

I’ve seen many up through about 2002-03, because I wasn’t ready to hate it yet because it was a cornerstone of my childhood, but between college and the overall decline of the show, I stopped watching. I saw the MoneyBART episode and that’s the only one I’ve seen in full in a long time.

Me and Julie discussed starting a petition to allocate one FOX rerun slot for solely classic episodes…I really should get serious about that.

Around my junior year of HS I had other shit to do on Sunday nights, so I kept missing the new Simpsons episodes. By the time I got to college it wasn’t routine anymore, and I was usually watching sunday night baseball instead. I watched TONS of reruns over that period though.

My least favorite Simpsons eps that I’ve seen are the Alec Baldwin/Kim Basinger one and the Simpsons Bible stories episode. I also think Treehouse of Horror episodes are wildly overrated.

The Treehouse episodes have some incredibly funny bits.

“Oh Lisa, you and your stories. Mr. Burns is a vampire… Beer kills brain cells… Now let’s all go to that place where our beds and tv…. is.”

The one where Homer goes back in time is one of the funniest things ever.

Compared to the rest of the scripted shit on television that passes as comedy, The Simpsons worst episodes are still some of the better shows on television. It can’t keep up with the newer good shows. 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, etc. bury them, but I’d watch the worst Simpsons episode ever instead of the best Two and a Half Men episode ever.

Jae-Hoon Ha, OF, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 2-for-3, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI; 2-for-4, CS. 20-year-old Korean was hitting .241 entering August, but 16-for-32 run in last nine games have him up to .300/.336/.457 in 37 games.

Brett Jackson, OF, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 3-for-5, 2 R, BB, K, SB. Up to .313/.407/.615 in 26 Triple-A games; hard to see him not spending most of 2012 in the big leagues.

So I wonder if anyone has a done a statistical analysis on how accurate projections are for players and teams. The storyline you always hear on the radio/TV is that the game is unpredictable, which is more or less true day to day at the MLB level, but they sort of revel in predictions being off-base. Anyway, I’m curious how good of a job the advanced statistics do.

But most sports media members are fuckign lazy and will seize on outliers as if they demonstrate the faultiness of metric-based predictors. But the reality is if these people had even a moderate understanding of standard deviation, they would realize what they are doing is stupid and lazy.

The likely reason for this is that it’s easier for a pitcher to suffer a serious injury AND 200 innings isn’t as reliable a sample as 550 plate appearances. 60 innings is a joke.

What you basically find with team-level projections is that about 66% of the teams are within 5-7 wins (can’t remember), 95% are within 14 wins and then you have a team or two each year that does far better or worse than their projection.

Using WAR to calculate win total as we’ve done here and did on ACB for a long time is not at all accurate. It’s a shortcut method to give us an idea of the true talent level, but they shouldn’t be taken too seriously. There’s no reason that a team that has a WAR that adds up to a total of 80 wins with replacement level couldn’t win 95 or couldn’t lose 110. Simulations are the way to get projected records and those are what we see on Baseball Prospectus and The Hardball Times as well as maybe a couple other places.

I kinda like it to lottery tickets. Its not our money but buy buying more tickets we ahve a better chance for one of these guys to hit and make money. A lot of these guys are guys who would have gone much higher but they had strong committments. I like the strategy. The red sox do it all the time

I have no idea about Scott, but typically guys who are tougher signs get drafted later fwiw

Scott, who moved to the United States from South Africa three years ago, did not pitch at any major showcase events last summer, but he’s popping up this spring in another down year for Arizona high school talent. He’s a good athlete who is also a standout soccer player for Notre Dame Prep. Scott has a projectable 6-foot-2 frame and is committed to Arizona. His fastball sits in the 90-92 mph range, topping out at 93. He flashes an above-average breaking ball at times and he can throw the pitch for strikes, though it’s mostly below-average now. Like most high school pitchers, Scott doesn’t throw a changeup. He got roughed up during a couple of starts late in the year, but scouts still like his athleticism and projection.

Dillon Maples has first round talent, but was insistent he’d go to college. He fell to the Cubs in the 14th round. Among all the players they’re signing overslot, I hope they get him signed.

The signing bonus these guys end up with is indicative of what they would have been drafted had there not been a commitment. They gave Scott 3rd round money.

The Cubs drafted a lot of players who required overslot signings. I’m all for that. Ricketts has stuck to his word for once. I’ll give him the credit he’s due here. If they sign Baez, Maples and Vogelbach, I’ll be thrilled. Adding in Gretzky and Dunston would be icing on the cake at this point.

Didn’t Callis say that Maples was locked up?
Didn’t Callis say that Maples was locked up?
There was a rumor that he was and then another rumor he wasn’t. I don’t think the Cubs sign him. I think it will take a 7-figure bonus and possibly as much as it takes to sign their first rounder.

At least at his age they probably won’t have to sign him to a major league deal like they did with Samardzija

Consider the slot for Taylor Scott was $157,500 and they signed him for 3rd round money at $279,950. The Cubs got money and that $100K isn’t going to make them go broke. The draft is definitely where I want the Cubs to be overspending every team. That’s going to mean you sign all of you overslot picks. We have to be pleased so far this year. Getting Vogelbach is much more likely and may even be a done deal. Dunston is probably not going to happen and I doubt Maples signs either. Would be nice to get both of them. I’d throw 1st round money at Maples to get him to sign.

Not sure if it’s been said yet, but Brett Jackson went 2-4 with a double today. Now batting .320/.410/.620, but he went 1-9 on Friday and Saturday so he’s not hitting very well these days.
