Obstructed View Hall of Fame Survey

Aisle 424 suggested we have a Hall of Fame survey that includes all 37 players on the ballot. We figured it might be fun so we've set one up. We're using the same rules: pick no more than 10, 75% required to enter.

Here is a helpful link from B-Ref that brings together all of the HOF candidates' stats on one page for easy reference.

The survey includes yes, no and no answer options, but you only need to select "yes" for those you think should be in the Hall of Fame. You do not need to click "No" (we're trying to save you some time).

We're keeping the voting open until 2 weeks from Sunday (December 9th). We'd like to get as much participation as possible so we're asking you to tweet this or post it on facebook. We'll be doing the same on occasion too.

When the voting closes we'll reveal who gets into our Hall of Fame and we'll each discuss our ballots and the reasoning for why we voted for certain players. We'll also do a community round-up.

It shouldn't take you too long so please take some when you ge ta chance. Click the link below to vote and feel free to share your ballot in the comments.

One of the Finest Days in Cubs History: September 27, 2003

Here we are, in a Cubs baseball season that was deposited into the septic tank of history approximately 150 days ago.  If you can name the Cubs current starting rotation, well, that’s just sad.  Get a life. The Cubs underperformed major-league caliber baseball again today, but let’s forget about that and find something else to think about. We could celebrate the 172nd birthday of Thomas Nast by smashing piñatas in the form of GOP elephants and Democratic Donkeys (because Santa Claus and Uncle Sam should never be piñatas).  We could muster as much excitement as possible over Saturday night’s Toledo-Western Michigan game.  We could lament the loss of the NHL preseason. Or, we could reflect on how, only 9 years and 2 days ago, the Cubs had one of their best days in history.

On the morning of Sept 27, 2003, the Cubs were half a game in front of Houston for the NL Central lead, with 3 games left to play. They had to play a double header against Pittsburgh because the previous night’s game was rained out.  Mark Prior started game 1 and would eventually go 6.2 innings, striking out 10, on his way to win #18 and a lifetime of arm trouble. He only threw 133 pitches that day which was OK, because he only threw 131 in his previous outing, so he was rested.  Kyle Farnsworth and one of my all-time favorite Cubs, Joe Borowski, closed out the game.  The score was 4-2.  Josh Fogg took the loss. The offensive star was Situational Hitting, in a cameo appearance in Cubs history, as the Cubs scored 2 runs on sac flies and one on a bases-loaded ground out to short.  The other run came on a Damien Miller home run, his last as a Cub.  As the game was winding down, Houston lost to Milwaukee, setting up game 2 as the clincher.

It was a damn-good Pittsburgh team though (after all, they won 75 games in 2003), so a double-header sweep was unlikely.  I have a distinct memory of the feeling of dread that the Cubs would be unable to sweep.  Odds and Cubbishness argued for a split.

Game 2 featured the Bearded Wonder against Ryan Vogelsong, in the 7th start of his career.  Turned out to be one of his shortest too–he lasted only 1.1 innings and gave up 6 runs. All the Cubs had to do was hold on and they’d clinch the division championship. Sosa hit his 40th HR and Moises Alou hit his 22nd. No one shook Alou’s hand after his jack though.  Matt Clement cruised, giving up no runs, 5 hits, and 1 BB through 7 before a run-scoring triple and a passed ball. The Cubs won 7-2.  Despite the offensive explosion, no Cub batter had more than one hit or run-scored, and  Mark GrudF7 had the most RBI for the game; two.  I guess Situational Hitting stuck around for a nightcap. Even Koyie Hill, I mean Paul Bako, had an RBI and run scored on 1 for 3 hitting.

Riding the momentum of their division-clinching double header, the Cubs lost the next day but beat Atlanta in 5 games in the Division Series.  I’m not really sure what happened after that.

Iowa

Mercifully the Iowa Cubs season ended last night due to the final 4 games in NO being canceled by Hurricane Issac. Iowa started the season off with more talent than any other minor league affiliate but the promotion a thon of the last few months ravaged this roster to the point where even linking to the box score was too much effort. Look for Cardenas, Campana and a few RP's to find their way to Chicago once rosters expand.

Smokies

Trey McNutt struck out the side in his only inning of relief work. I hope he gets a shot in the pen during September. Everyone else struggled a bit.

Daytona

Javier Baez went 1-4 with his 2nd Daytona HR. Baez has really struggled since the promotion but will get playing time in the AFL this fall.

Peoria

Pin Chieh Chen was 3-4 with a pair of walks and stole his 34th base of the year. Soler hit 2-6 and swiped a base of his own. Joe Zeller gave up 5 ER in 6 IP so I can assume the knuckle was not dancing last night.

Boise

Stephen Bruno went 2-4 and is hitting .354. Bruno is the "scrappy" Hawk. Boise starts its playoff run on Sept 3 and hopefully Amaya gets out of his first slump of the year. Amaya has been pretty dreadful over the last 10 batting under .200. I would imagine Boise will probably start Pierce Johnson & Tayler Scott.

AZL

Playoff time and AZL lost its first game. By a lot. Shawon Dunston Jr had been one of AZL's best hitters and wasn't in the lineup last night. Today he's tweeting about just wanting to go home. I guess somebody got grounded.

Iowa

Paul Ryan's Take- Tony Campana had the rate 6-6 game with 4 HR's 4 SB's and a pair of triples. It was truly a testament to his dogged determination and America's greatness. We are all better for having witnessed it.

Reality- Campana was 0-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

Smokies

Paul Ryan's Take- Another night without baseball. Another dream closed due to Obama and his failed failure's.

Reality- Scheduled off day

Daytona Game 1

Paul Ryan's Take – PJ Francescon struck a blow for freedom working 6 IP and only allowing 1 ER. He struck out 3.

Reality- PJ Francescon is the most dangerous man in the world. His live to kill ratio per meeting 9 strangers is a staggering 0/9.

Game 2

Paul Ryan's Take- Nobody really did anything interesting this game.

Reality- Well played Ryan.

Peoria

I'm out of Ryan quips so we'll just switch over to normal shit.

Soler was 2-4 and Yao Ling Wang got lit up. Wang gave up 7 ER in 4 IP which is too bad because before this start he was really having himself a year. I think he's done for the season but Wang will continue to be a name to watch heading into 2013.

Boise

Apparently Dan Vogelbach hit a HR onto the roof of the visiting team's bus last night. It was the 10th blast of his Boise career. He also drew a pair of walks and is taking bases at around a 14 % clip.

AZL

No game

Iowa

Horacio Ramirez gave up 7 ER in 4.2 IP so its good to see that working out well. Miguel Socolovich struck out 2 in 1.1 IP of work. He is now our best relief pitcher.

Smokies

Logan Watkins ended the Smokies home season with a walk off HR, his 7th of the year. Baby Brenly went 3-4 and also hit a HR his 6th.  Austin Kirk gave up 2 ER in 7 IP and struck out 1 batter.

Daytona

More Rain.

Peoria

Jorge Soler drew a pair of walks in an 0-2 night and now has 5 BB to 6 K's in 56 AB's in Peoria. If anything I've been supervised at how patient he is although I did expect a bit more power. My man crush Ben Wells pitched 2 innings of scoreless baseball walking 1 and giving up a pair of hits.

Boise

Gioskar Amaya hit his 8th HR of the year and is still going strong on what has been an incredible season. Jeimer Candelario was 1-4 with a BB and his 6th HR of the season his first donger in the month of August. Candelario had a huge start but has just been average since the month of June. Pierce Johnson worked 2 IP and gave up 1 unearned run while striking out 3.

AZL

Garrett Schlecht had a night going 4-4 and only lacking the HR to make the cycle. He also stole his 8th base of the year for shits and giggles. Dillon Maples continues to struggle with his command this year only lasting 1 inning. In 10.1 IP Maples has 10 walks and 12 K's.

Iowa

The Greg of Rohan was 2-4 with a HR. Jaye Chapman lowered his ERA to 8.64 by working a clean inning.

Smokies

Jae Hoon Ha hit his 7th HR of the year and is batting .405/.476/.649 in his last 10. He added an OF assist for fun. Ha has a .995 OPS in August and I can't remember him having a better month than this in his career.

Daytona

Need we even say anything? Another PPD game.

Peoria

Starling Peralta struck out 8 in 6 IP and gave up a pair of runs. His ERA now sits at 3.35. Jorge Soler was 1-3 with a double and is slugging .509 in in Peoria. Jacob Rogers went 2-3 with a HR.

Boise

No Game

AZL

Yasiel Balaguert hit his 2nd AZL HR last night but is still scuffling pretty badly. 2012 pick Ryan McNeil pitched 4 no hit innings walking 3 and striking out 2. He was followed by Corbin Hoffner who fanned 5 in 2.
