Barry Larkin Voted Into Hall of Fame, BBWAA Tells All Others to GTFO

In Major League Baseball by aisle42455 Comments

Barry Larkin joined the ghost of Ron Santo as the only inductees in the 2012 class of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Below are the final vote totals:

• Barry Larkin 495 (86.4%)
• Jack Morris 382 (66.7%)
• Jeff Bagwell 321 (56.0%)
• Lee Smith 290 (50.6%)
• Tim Raines 279 (48.7%)
• Edgar Martinez 209 (36.5%)
• Alan Trammell 211 (36.8%)
• Fred McGriff 137 (23.9%)
• Larry Walker 131 (22.9%)
• Mark McGwire 112 (19.5%)
• Don Mattingly 102 (17.8%)
• Dale Murphy 83 (14.5%)
• Rafael Palmeiro 72 (12.6%)
• Bernie Williams 55 (9.6%)
• Juan Gonzalez 23 (4.0%)
• Vinny Castilla 6 (1.0%)
• Tim Salmon 5 (0.9%)
• Bill Mueller 4 (0.7%)
• Brad Radke 2 (0.3%)
• Javy Lopez 1 (0.2%)
• Eric Young 1 (0.2%)
• Jeromy Burnitz, Brian Jordan, Terry Mulholland, Phil Nevin, Ruben Sierra, Tony Womack 0.

It seems ridiculous to me that Bagwell and Raines aren’t in, but the BBWAA, as a group, seems to have issues with pharmaceuticals for both of them.

Since Bagwell can’t prove a negative and he played during a time when steroid use was rampant, he obviously can’t be trusted as a good person.  Sure, he never raped children or women, but we can’t say with 100% certainty that he never injected himself with a steroid.  Thus, he’ll have to wait a bit.

As for Raines, his drug use is more documented, but the last time I checked, cocaine is not considered a performance enhancer, so it must be some sort of morality clause that I’m not aware of.  Mickey Mantle drank himself to death, and there are plenty of other Hall of Famers who didn’t exactly treat their bodies as temples, but somehow Raines’ cocaine use is being held against him more than, say, Paul Molitor’s was.

But congratulations to Barry Larkin for being an excellent baseball player and for also being a good person (as far as we know).

I can’t believe not one Chicago writer voted for Terry Mulholland based solely on his relief appearance on the last day of the 1998 season the day after he started.

Someone literally voted that Eric Young was, not just a scrappy player and a nice guy, but HALL OF FAME worthy? Who are these voters? A machine did this, right?

Fred McGriff is a bad person for once taking a long time to decide whether to waive the no trade rights he successfully earned and uproot his family and agree to a trade to the Cubs to temporarily further their precarious playoffs hopes. Not a HOF’er. We need to find out who cast those 137 votes and make their names public.

Snyds asked about the bullpen in the last thread. Here’s what I got.

Sure things: Marmol, Samardzija, Russell
One of Maine, Beliveau, Gaub
Likely: Corpas, Sonnanstine
7th, if they use 7: Dolis, Cabrera, or Mateo

some variation of the multiple three inning starters per game strategies that have been hypothesized

what was the book plan? two regular starters plus a mix and match schedule for the other three positions? something like that could work with the cubs as they are currently set up

It just might work.
what was the book plan? two regular starters plus a mix and match schedule for the other three positions? something like that could work with the cubs as they are currently set up
The Book’s plan was for 5 starters pitching something like this.

Day 1: Ace
Day 2: #2
Day 3: #4/#5
Day 4: #3
Day 5: #5/#4

1s, 2s, and 3s are basically the same as it is now whereas the 4th and 5th starters each start one game, but also relieve the other. Each starter pitches about 3 innings to maximize the times through the order advantage.
Link? I can’t seem to remember that idea.
I think Tango actually put it to print in “The Book” if I’m not mistaken. It was either in one of the regular pitching chapters or the reliever leverage chapter.

i must be conflating tango’s plan with some conversations i’ve had with other people who proposed something more radical than what the book did.

i can’t remember specifics, but it basically involved something akin to what you might see in the low minors: a bigger “rotation”, 2-3 inning stints for all the involved pitchers and a thinner ‘pen
i must be conflating tango’s plan with some conversations i’ve had with other people who proposed something more radical than what the book did.
I think it would be tough to get 8 to 9 innings per week per starting pitcher if you used them 3 innings at a time. You’d at least want the 1-2-3 to be getting close to 9 innings per week anyway. With 6.5 games per week they’d be throwing 3 innings every other day except when there’s an off-day.

right, it would only make sense if all your starters sucked, which could very well be the case if garza and dempster are shipped out

That doesnt seem as rough as one would think. IF Corpas is even close to what he was before the surgery, he might be a nice little piece to have, and by that i mean wont be Koyie bad…

I think I know now how Bilbo Baggins must have felt in Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” My companions and I have set out on our own mountainous journey to try to attain a treasure.

The treasure in our case is not a pile of gold guarded by a dragon, but rather the gratification that comes with reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

…but this makes him an awesome person.
