Cashner exits game with tightness in his right shoulder

In News And Rumors by dmick89108 Comments

Andrew Cashner was taken out of today’s Cubs/Diamondbacks game in the 6th inning with tightness in his pitching shoulder. He had thrown the ball as well or better than any starter so far. He’d averaged about 94.5 mph on the fastball, but on one pitch in that 6th inning you could see him lower the shoulder after the follow through. The trainer immediately ran out to see what was wrong and Cashner was replaced by the team’s best wide receiver.

Tightness in the shoulder isn’t abnormal for pitchers and may not be a big deal. I’m hoping it isn’t, but I’m also not optimistic. You could clearly see something started bothering him after that last pitch and that’s troublesome. We won’t hear anything else for at least a day. If Cashner goes to the disabled list, he’ll likely be replaced in the rotation by Casey Coleman.

It’s the Cubs. How bad do you think it will be?

Also, FYI, Jay Jackson is out with shoulder fatigue/injury. So fuck you, dj.

The problem is that they don’t stick with them. They’ll look at Mateo’s outing right now and think, hey, this guy is going to give up 4800 runs per inning so we can’t use him again.

So… Wood and Marmol are unavailable, and a lack of control from JeffF7 and Mateo has forced them from the game. That leaves Russell, Grabow, and Marshall to finish the game.

Grabow, Russell (if he’s even that good), Mateo, and Samardzija.

the appalling thing is hendry’s paying him $3.3mm this year. i know that wasn’t the worst contract of all-time, but what a fiasco of a draft.

I’m fine with that in a world where the Cubs are spending like crazy. In their current, more cost-limited regime, it’s sismply awful.

I’m with Shawn. I don’t mind the team spending the money on someone like Samardzija. You’re going to miss many more times than you are successful when it comes to drafting regardless of the talent. I’ve wanted to see the Cubs spend money in the draft for a long time and I bitch about the Cubs not doing it right now. What I do mind is the Cubs unwillingness to just let him walk. Just because the money is spent doesn’t mean you have to suffer through even more of a loss than the money itself.

yeah the F7 thing did not work out. I think that draft is a great example of how both fans like us and scouts have no idea whats going on.

all of us RIPPED the Colvin pick but Wilken saw something there. Yet all of us also though the F7 thing was a freaking joke and we were right

The other thing I like about Colvin is that he hits lefties as well as righties. You can play him everyday if someone gets injured and he’s not a liability 30% of the time.

The question is one of odds. How many times do you have to roll the dice on a guy like Samardzija before you roll a natural 20 develop value from the pick? Is that success rate high enough to justify the combined salaries of all those overslot draft picks?

Marshall was warming up to start the 8th, so it was possible he’d be needed then. But with Grabow the only one left in the pen, I guess they would have left Marshall in for more than an inning anyway. Moot point now.

Also, Russell was pretty fiery there on that 3rd strike. Is that admirable or disrespecting the game, I can’t remember which.
