When a Japanese team decides he’s willing to let a player negotiate with US teams, there’s a process that I’m sure you’re all familiar with. It’s called the posting system. Currently, the highest bid wins the right to negotiate exclusively with the player. I mentioned yesterday that changes could be coming, but changes could be coming within days.
The MLB Commissioners Office and Nippon Professional Baseball are closing in on a posting agreement that the sides are optimistic will be in place by Nov. 1, two sources told The Post.
The best pitcher in Japan, Masahiro Tanaka, is expected to be posted this offseason, and the Yankees are likely to be aggressive in trying to win the post.
There had been speculation the system would undergo radical changes, with perhaps even the teams with the three highest posting bids all gaining the rights to negotiate with the players. I have been told there will be alterations in the process, but still only one team will win the post and have exclusive negotiating rights.
It is possible, as a way to give the player more power to chose his destination, he might get to pick a singular team from, say, the top two or three bidders.
It will be interesting to see what, exactly, these changes are and how it affects the Cubs pursuit of Masahiro Tanaka.

I’ve got a feeling that whatever the changes the posting system are, they’re going to make it more difficult for the Cubs to sign Tanaka.

My opinion is probably shaped by the fact that Ryan Dempster has had next to no camera time. I’m happy to root for him to get a ring, since he was great with the Cubs, but I’m glad not to have to endure his schtick.

If the top 3 each get to negotiate, then it’s just money again, and I think it probably puts the Cubs at parity (in which case they’d only lose out on Tanaka IMO if the Yankees way overpay).

I’m guessing one of the changes is that there is a maximum amount going to the team. I’ve read mlb and npb are both wanting more money to go to the player. A maximum posting fee wouldn’t surprise me. Something like $30 million and all teams who offer that get to negotiate with the player.

If that’s the case, I think it definitely hurts the Cubs by virtue of there just being a lot of teams in the race. It probably hurts every team with a lot of money.
