Congratulations to the Milwaukee Brewers

In Major League Baseball by berseliusLeave a Comment

With the Cubs 5-1 win over the Cardinals yesterday, the Milwaukee Brewers won their first division title since the days of Harvey’s Wallbangers. Kudos to the Brewers front office for going all in for this season when it was clear their window was closing.

Congratulations to everyone on that team. Except Ryan Braun.

Hopefully Prince Fielder will bring a World Series ring with him when he’s the Cubs 2012 first baseman.
I didn’t have a problem with Andy’s use of stats. It’s not like he was doing a serious analysis of the team, he was setting up jokes. I’ve done the same thing. My biggest criticism is that it wasn’t nearly as funny as a lot of the other stuff he has written.
That’s true, but this isn’t even honest:

You should be very proud of extending your streak of allowing more hits than the season before to four, and the fact that your strikeout-to-walk ratio continues to get worse every year.

K/BB
2008: 2.46
2009: 2.65
2010: 2.42
2011: 2.49 prior to last night’s game (2.36 now)

He’s right where he’s been since 2008. The difference between 2.47 (his average over those 4 years) and any one year is tiny. For example, he’s averaged 188 strikeouts and 76 walks and if you subtract 5 walks to that it’s a K/B ratio of 2.65 (matching his 2009 season) and if you add 4 walks you get 2.47 (basically what it was at the time he wrote that post). When you see a difference that small, you have to look at something else or ignore it.

Not that I expect Dolan or anyone else for that matter to do what I’m doing below, but I figure since I called him out I may as well post some accurate numbers. Intentional walks cannot be counted. That’s a managerial decision. Hit by pitch has to be included because it’s equal to a walk. Both are the result of wildness. When I talk about K/BB, I’m always talking about K per BB+HBP-IBB. Below are those numbers since moving into the rotation in 2008.

Year K/BB
2008 2.28
2009 2.57
2010 2.26
2011 2.27

That’s including last night. We have 2.28, 2.26 and 2.27 and then the outlier of 2.57 in 2009. If anything, this is proof of just how damn consistent Ryan Dempster has been since joining the rotation (at least with regards to what he controls on the mound).

Using rates are better. K% = strikeouts per batter faced (IBB subtracted from BF). BB% = walks (BB, HBP -IBB) per batter faced (IBB also excluded).

K% BB%
21.9% 9.6%
20.5% 8.0%
22.8% 10.1%
21.6% 9.5%

Again, there’s little difference. But as I said, I don’t expect him to do that. I do expect what he says to be truthful and it wasn’t.

He claims Soriano was “3 better than the average left fielder” in OPS+, but as ACT said, that’s not what OPS+ tells us. He was almost certainly below average among left fielders. OPS+ tells us how he compares to the league with ballpark adjustments included. It’s not based on position.

I only read the parts quoted in the comments in the last thread. So I’m sure there were more problems. I mean, if you’re willing to lie about Dempster’s K/BB ratio, why should I trust anything else he says?

/nitpicking bastard

He also lied about allowing more hits per inning for 4 straight year.

2008: 0.84
2009: 0.98
2010: 0.92
2011: 1.03

He’s either blind or stupid.

Has Kerry ever done any announcing? I would like to think the Cubs would hire someone with experience. What possible reason would people have to think that Wood would be a good announcer? Because he threw 100 mph when he was really young? I don’t think that’s a qualification for an announcer.

I also hate Joey Votto for no good reason. I don’t know, their personalities from what I’ve seen makes them seem like the kind of people I wouldn’t like. If they were on the Cubs, I’d probably think they were okay. I used to find Z’s antics annoying to embarrassing, but I liked it when he was pitching well. I hate the one-game idea. If they’re adding another wild card team it should at least be a 3-game series. I know some teams would complain about layoff, but that’s not a big deal. I’m making dates up below.

October 1: season ends
October 2: WC1/WC2 game 1
October 3: WC1/WC2 game 2
October 4: WC1/WC2 game 3, ALDS1 and NLDS1 game 1
October 5: ALDS1 and NLDS1 game 2, NLDS2 and ALDS2 game 1

Some teams gets that many days off already. One of the advantages of that type of system would be that the WC teams would be playing without any rest (unless they win the first 2 of the 3-game series).

I feel like they should add two wild cards such that the top seeds in each league would have a bye while the worst division champ and the three wild cards duke it out for a week. Having five teams and forcing a one-game playoff seems really stupid. It’s like the play-in game at the end of the season in the current system if multiple division leaders/wild card leaders are tied.

From the quotes in the article, it sounds like Soriano is complaining more about being moved around in the lineup than batting 7th.

“I’m not a guy that fights with people,” Soriano told ESPNChicago.com. “The way they treat me this year, I don’t like it. The way they have me hit in the No. 7, 5 and 6 spots, I have trouble concentrating on the job hitting in those different spots. But [Mike] Quade is the manager and does his best to try to make the team better.”

Soriano has made it clear about 785 times that he doesn’t like to be moved around in the lineup. The entertaining part is that every time he says it he says the manager makes the lineup and blah blah blah. Then he goes and continues to complain. It’s humorous.

I understand how he could be irritated or upset. I get that. I might even see how he could think it affects his performance, but I don’t need to hear about it 7 times per year.

The thing with baseball players is that if they think it hinders them to be moved around, then it probably does simply because they are focused less on their job and more on moving around in the lineup.

I think that is why he always liked batting 1st is because he knew that was where he was going to be every damn day and it just put his mind at ease. Do we want our players to not care about where they hit because it shouldn’t matter? Yeah. But they are people and people are irrational.

He says there couldn’t possibly have been a conspiracy because there is no way it could have been kept secret all these years with the amount of people it would have required. Which I completely agree with. But then he presents evidence (eyewitness accounts, and maybe some ballistics if I remember right) that the fatal head shot to Kennedy actually came from one of the secret service agents trailing behind him. When Oswald started ringing shots from above, he pulled out his weapon in the commotion and inadvertently blew his head off. He also says its much more likely that there was a coverup that the secret service accidentally murdered the president than the tin foil hat conspiracy theories floating around.

So no conspiracy, but two shooters. I’d never ever heard that before.

That seems like a plausible theory but isn’t that also a conspiracy that would be hard to conceal? It would still require massive cover-up from various government agencies not just within the secret service. It would have been accidental but the cover-up would still be vary hard to have kept secret. I also think it would have leaked out before now and been more commonly presented. Your spoiler actually makes me have some interest in reading this book which I really didn’t have before. (dying laughing)
